Miles Davis
Someday My Prince Will Come

  (Item #: davissomed_1906_10_01)

Our Price: $399.99

  • A KILLER copy of this Davis classic, with Shootout Winning Triple Plus (A+++) sound or close to it - exceptionally quiet vinyl too
  • Our Six Eye Stereo pressing is Tubey Magical, full-bodied and high-rez, not to mention uncannily present - Miles will be in the room with you
  • Musically this is one of our favorite Miles albums - the sound is Demo Disc Quality on the copies that sound the way this one does
  • "The set opens with the title, a lilting waltz that nonetheless gets an original treatment here... Davis waxes light and lyrical with his Harmon mute... [Hank] Mobley plays a strictly journeyman solo, and then Coltrane blows the pack away with a solo so deep inside the harmony it sounds like it's coming from somewhere else."

The Duke and his band accentuate their swinging dance band side, while Basie and company have never sounded as suave and exotic as when playing Billy Strayhorn arrangements. Everyone has a good time, and that joy infuses this album from start to finish."

Sorcerer

  (Item #: davissorce_1904_9_11)

Our Price: $129.99

  • With two seriously good sides each rating a Double Plus (A++) or BETTER, this original White Arrows 360 stereo pressing was one of the best copies we played in our recent shootout
  • Sorcerer demonstrates the big-as-life, spacious and unerringly accurate 30th Street Studio Sound Fred Plaut was justly famous for
  • 4 1/2 stars: "The emphasis is as much on complex, interweaving chords and a coolly relaxed sound as it is on sheer improvisation, though each member tears off thoroughly compelling solos. Still, the individual flights aren't placed at the forefront the way they were on the two predecessors -- it all merges together, pointing toward the dense soundscapes of Miles' later '60s work."

Dave Brubeck - Countdown - Time In Outer Space

Our Shootout Winner from 2016

  (Item #: brubecount_2016)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Jazz Hall of Fame.

Clean and Clear, Yet Rich and Sweet. This copy managed to find the perfect balance of these attributes. You want that rare copy that keeps what is good about a Tubey Magical analog recording from The Golden Age of Jazz while managing to avoid the pitfalls so common to them: smear, lack of top end extension, opacity and blubber. To be sure, the fault is not with the recording (I guess; again, not having heard the master tape) but with the typically mediocre pressing.

Dave Brubeck - Time Out

Classic Records Debunked

  (Item #: brubetimeo_debunk)

Sonic Grade: D

When we did a shootout for this record way back in October of 2007 we took the opportunity to play the Classic Records 200 gram pressing. Maybe we got a bad one, who knows, but that record did not sound remotely as good as the real thing (6 eye or 360, both can be quite good). The piano sounded thin and hard, which was quite unexpected given the fact that we used to consider the Classic LP one of their few winners and actually recommended it.

STUNNING A+++ SOUND AND QUIET VINYL ON BOTH SIDES! Breathtakingly spacious and transparent, this copy has the big three-dimensional soundstage that makes this record such a joy to listen to. Michel Legrand - Legrand Jazz

Our Stereo Shootout Winner from 2017

  (Item #: legralegra_2017)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Jazz Hall of Fame.

This album is more common in mono than stereo, but we found the sound of the mono pressing we played seriously wanting. It's dramatically smaller and more squawky and crude than even the worst of the stereo pressings we played.

We had a copy we liked years ago but that was years ago. We don't have that copy anymore and we don't have a stereo that sounds the way our old one did either. Here are some other records that we don't think sound very good in MONO.

Off the charts "Triple Triple" sound for this classic Miles Davis Live album - both sides earned our top grade of A+++. This copy was clearer, bigger and just more REAL sounding than any other we played - you are there! The brilliant engineering of Fred Plaut (Kind of Blue) is surely the reason this album sounds so amazingly vivid and lifelike.

Our Shootout Winner from 2016

  (Item #: davisinasi_2016)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Jazz Hall of Fame.

Sit down with this record, draw the blinds, and you’ll hear why AMG gave it 5 Stars. Perhaps it’s the extended solos from John McLaughlin, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock Wayne Shorter, and Davis himself. Perhaps it’s the slippery, spiraling nature of these signature jazz fusion epic pieces. Perhaps it’s the grooves that Tony Williams and Dave Holland spin, slowly at first, building later in each of the LP’s mesmerizing tracks.

Our Shootout Winner from 2014

  (Item #: davismiles_in_2014)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Jazz Hall of Fame.

WONDERFUL SOUND on both sides of this Columbia 360 Label pressing! We just finished a big shootout for this wonderful Miles Davis album and this copy was dramatically better sounding than most. Both sides have excellent bass, correct sounding brass, wonderful transparency and loads of tubey magic. The music is wonderful, Miles with his classic '60s quintet (Hancock, Shorter, Carter, Williams) with the addition of George Benson on one song.

Miles is backed by his classic '60s crew -- Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Ron Carter & Tony Williams.

Miles Davis - Nefertiti

Our Shootout Winner from 2013

  (Item #: davisnefer_2013)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Jazz Hall of Fame.

This Columbia 360 Label pressing has excellent sound on both sides and unusually quiet vinyl throughout. The music is wonderful too -- Miles and his late '60s quintet featuring Ron Carter, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter and Tony Williams are all in top form here, slowly working their way towards the electric fusion sounds that would be coming shortly. Many copies lack the kind of transparency and clarity you need to make sense of what each player is doing, but this Super Hot pressing gives you those qualities on both sides.

Miles Davis - Sketches of Spain

Our Shootout Winner in 2016

  (Item #: davissketc_2016)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Jazz Hall of Fame.

The first White Hot copy to hit the site in nearly EIGHT years! Both sides were stunning, knocking us out and earning our top Triple Plus (A+++) grade.

When you get a Hot Stamper like this one the sound is truly MAGICAL. (AMG has that dead right in their review.) Tons of ambience, tubey magic all over the place; let's face it, this is one of those famous Columbia recordings that shows just how good the Columbia engineers were back then. The sound is lively but never strained. Davis's horn has breath and bite just like the real thing. What more can you ask for?

Miles Davis - Sketches of Spain

Mono Shootout Winner in 2008

  (Item #: davissketc_2008)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Jazz Hall of Fame.

This Mono Six Eye Columbia original pressing is the WINNER and [not-at-all] CURRENT CHAMPION of our Sketches of Spain shootouts. This record always sounded so thin and aggressive, with Miles’ horn always somewhat pinched and sour, but now it sounds wonderful. Who knew this record could sound so good?

Harry Pearson put this record on his TAS List of Super Discs.

Miles Davis - Someday My Prince Will Come

Our Outstanding Reissue from 2014

  (Item #: davissomed_2014)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Jazz Hall of Fame.

The first Hot copy of this classic to hit the site in over five years! Side one rates A++ to A+++ -- super open and transparent with amazing immediacy.

This Red Label reissue DESTROYED the similar copies we played it against, and was also surprisingly competitive with our Super Hot (and Super Noisy) Six Eye ref copy. Most of these later pressings have superior clarity (compared to the earlier ones) but lack nearly all of the tubey magic. This one’s amazingly clean and clear, but still delivers on the tubey qualities -- it’s richer, warmer, and sweeter than any other Red Label pressing we played.

Miles Davis - Someday My Prince Will Come

Our Six-Eye Shootout Winner from 2019

  (Item #: davissomed_2019)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Jazz Hall of Fame.

We've found Red Label copies in the past that sound pretty darn good but this Six-Eye was a HUGE step up in class over the reissues this time around. It was not even close. This one is doing it all, with in-the-room presence, massive amounts of energy, clear, note-like bass and a rich, breathy quality to Miles's horn that is simply not to be found on most pressings, be they originals, reissues, on Heavy Vinyl, at 45 RPM or what have you.

Thelonious Monk - It's Monk's Time

Getting the Balance Right

  (Item #: monk_itsmo_wtlf)

Another in our series of Home Audio Exercises with advice on What to Listen For (WTLF) as you critically evaluate your copy of It's Monk's Time

There are three main elements that comprise the sound of It's Monk's Time: piano, sax and drums. You need all three to be balanced and correct. The mix is perfection on the best copies, with the piano, sax and drums clearly audible and in musically correct proportion to each other.

As we played the sides we noted how each of them fared.

Thelonious Monk - It's Monk's Time

Our Shootout Winner from 2015

  (Item #: monk_itsmo_2015)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Jazz Hall of Fame.

This may be the best sounding Thelonious Monk album to ever hit the site. We can thank the brilliant Columbia engineers for their service to one of the authentic geniuses of jazz.

For some perspective, I can't think of a single Dave Brubeck album that sounds as good as this one.

And if you own the Speakers Corner Heavy Vinyl reissue, please buy this copy and hear what you've been missing.

Thelonious Monk - Straight, No Chaser

Our Shootout Winner from 2015

  (Item #: monk_strai_2015)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Jazz Hall of Fame.

Side two of this 360 pressing from 1967 is nearly White Hot -- what a recording! If you want to hear just how good Monk's great big rich piano sounds, look no further.

Rudy Van Gelder, eat your heart out. This is the piano sound Rudy never quite managed. Some say it's the crappy workhorse piano he had set up in his studio. Others say it was just poorly miked. Rather than speculating on something we know little about (good pianos and the their miking) let's just say that Columbia had the piano, the room and the mics to do it right as you can easily hear on this very record.
