Love - Love and Forever Changes

Sundazed Debunked

  (Item #: love_love_sundazed)

Sonic Grade: F

Two Hall of Shame titles, another two Sundazed records debunked.

We got hold of a minty original pressing of the first Love album recently, so in preparation for the commentary I pulled one of the Sundazed pressings off the shelf, (Forever Changes, the only one we ever bothered to sell), cracked it open and threw it on the turntable.

Gag, what a piece of crap. When I had auditioned them all those years ago (2002) it was -- I'm not kidding -- the best of the bunch.

Spirit - Clear

Sundazed Heavy Vinyl Debunked

  (Item #: spiriclear_sundazed)

Sonic Grade: F

A Hall of Shame and another Sundazed record debunked.

Although it's been many years since I last played it, I'm fairly confidant that the Sundazed only hints at the real sound of the best copies. Most Sundazed records would end up in our Hall of Shame if we ever bothered to audition them.

Being in the "record business", such as it is, I played my share and more of awful sounding Heavy Vinyl.

Spirit - Spirit

Sundazed Mono Reviewed

  (Item #: spirispiri_sundazed)

Sonic Grade: D

Another Sundazed record reviewed and found wanting.

As usual, the Sundazed only hints at the real sound of the recording. We recommended it back at the day; it's tonally correct, so for fifteen bucks you are getting your fifteen bucks worth and probably not a dime's more. We just cannot take this kind of sound seriously these days. Once you've heard the real thing, this pressing just won't do.

The Byrds - Fifth Dimension

Sundazed Debunked

  (Item #: byrdsfifth_sundazed)

Sonic Grade: D

The best stereo copies are rich, sweet and Tubey Magical -- three areas in which the Sundazed reissues are seriously lacking. (If anyone still cares; we can't be bothered with mediocrities such as this.)

And none of the Columbia monos we've played did much for us either. Congested and compressed, with no real top, who in his right mind could possibly prefer that sound?

Jefferson Airplane - Surrealistic Pillow (Mono)

Sundazed Reviewed

  (Item #: jeffesurre_debunk_sundazed)

Sonic Grade: C-

Back around 2000 I spent a fair amount of time comparing this pressing with both an RCA 1S Black Label original, two different RCA Orange Label reissues, and the DCC 180 gram pressing. To make a long story short, if you're willing to buy this record for the songs that really sound amazing on it, like "Today", then you should try one.

Check out our Heavy Vinyl Scorecard to read all about the latest winners and losers.

The Lovin’ Spoonful - Daydream

Sundazed Debunked

  (Item #: lovindaydr_sundazed)

Sonic Grade: D

The best sounding of the Lovin' Spoonful records I've heard on Sundazed, which means that the others would get an F for sound. Don't waste your money. I'd be surprised if the CDs weren't better sounding. (Many Sundazed CDs are actually quite good.)

The Lovin’ Spoonful - Do You Believe In Magic?

Sundazed Debunked

  (Item #: lovindoyou_debunk)

Sonic Grade: F

More awful Sundazed mastering. Can even the CD sound this bad?

Bob Dylan - Another Side of Bob Dylan

Sundazed Mono Debunked

  (Item #: dylananoth_debunk)

Sonic Grade: D

Another bad Sundazed record. Most of the Dylan catalog they did is just awful, regardless of what the reviewers at the time of their release may have written to the contrary.

Bob Dylan - Highway 61 Revisited

Sundazed Mono Debunked

  (Item #: dylanhighw_debunk)

Sonic Grade: D

A Hall of Shame Pressing and another Sundazed record debunked.

I don’t think mono works for this album, so we never carried it nor recommended it.

Here are some records that we've found have the potential to sound amazing in MONO.

Here are some other records that we don't think sound very good in MONO.

Bob Dylan - Blonde on Blonde

Sundazed Mono Junk

  (Item #: dylanblond_debunk)

Sonic Grade: D

Flat as a pancake and dead as a doornail, like most Sundazed records. Sundazed is clearly one of the worst record labels of all time.

The Byrds - Younger Than Yesterday

Sundazed Mono Debunked

  (Item #: byrdsyoung_debunk)

Sonic Grade: D

We can’t recommend this title. It’s thin, flat and dead in the midrange, with little of the magic of the originals. I suppose if you can’t find anything better, it will do in a pinch...

The Byrds - Mr. Tambourine Man

A Sundazed Heavy Vinyl Winner!

  (Item #: byrdsmrtam_scorecard)

Sonic Grade: B

This is probably the best of all the new [2006] Sundazed mono reissues. I never thought I would hear a Sundazed record with this kind of richness and sweetness. It reminds me of a good 360 pressing, and that has virtually never happened before. Side one is a tad better than side two, which is slightly brighter than it should be. But both sides are exceptionally good considering the modern mastering.

Bob Dylan - The Times They Are A-Changin’

A Sundazed Winner!

  (Item #: dylantimes_sundazed)

Sonic Grade: B

Sundazed finally gets one REALLY right! The mono version here MOIDERS the competition. (It’s a mono recording with stereo echo added -- how tough can it be?) Considering Sundazed's dismal track record, I wouldn't have thought they could do anything right.

Albert King - Born Under a Bad Sign

Sundazed Debunked

  (Item #: king_bornu_debunk)

Sonic Grade: C

Commenting about the first Hot Stamper pressing of this album ever to come our way, we noted:

This original Stax LP has AMAZING sound. You could not make this record sound any better. We really liked the Sundazed copy of this record until we heard this bad boy. It MURDERS their pressing! It has far more life, energy and natural presence than the Heavy Vinyl pressing. We always suspected that a good original would be better but we had no way of knowing since all the copies we saw were beat to death. This is the first clean copy of this record I’ve seen in 20 years.
