Nearly White Hot Stamper

Stan Getz
Getz Au Go Go

  (Item #: getz_getza_1901_1905_1908)

Our Price: $199.99

  • Stunning sound for this incredible recording with both sides rating Nearly Triple Plus (A++ to A+++), just shy of our shootout winner
  • Musically and sonically, this is one of our favorite jazz albums - fairly quiet vinyl too
  • This is an incredibly tough album to find with the right sound and decent surfaces, which is the main reason we are rarely able to do this shootout
  • 4 stars: "Highly recommended for all dimensions of jazz enthusiasts." [We would of course give it the full 5 Stars]

Our Price: $149.99

  • An outstanding copy with Double Plus (A++) Live Jazz sound from start to finish
  • This original stereo pressing is one of just a few to make it to the site in years - boy are these hard to find in this kind of clean condition with good quality sonics
  • Rich, tubey and musical, the sound is wonderful for these live performances of two very different groups, one featuring Getz, the other Jobim
  • 4 stars: "Getz/Gilberto #2 holds its own with an appealing selection of fine jazz and bossa nova cuts."

Super Hot Stamper

Stan Getz & Charlie Byrd
Jazz Samba

  (Item #: getz_jazz_samba_1810_1907)

Our Price: $99.99

  • A wonderful vintage stereo copy of this Bossa Nova classic - both sides rate a Double Plus (A++) or close to it for their outstanding sonics
  • The 1962 sound here is clear, open and highly resolving, yet still rich, warm and smooth - thanks to the brilliant engineering of Ed Greene
  • We rarely see surfaces this nice - clean copies that play as quietly as this LP are nearly impossible to find nowadays
  • 5 Stars: "Jazz Samba stands on its own artistic merit as a shimmering, graceful collection that's as subtly advanced - in harmony and rhythm - as it is beautiful. Getz and guitarist Charlie Byrd - who was actually responsible for bringing bossa nova to the U.S. and introducing Getz to the style - have the perfect touch for bossa nova's delicate, airy texture."

Ella Fitzgerald - Like Someone In Love

Our Shootout Winner from 2017

  (Item #: fitzglikes_2017)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

The space is HUGE and the sound so rich. The vocals have dramatically less hardness and the orchestra -- especially on side two -- is not brash for once.

Prodigious amounts of Tubey Magic as well, which is key to the best sounding copies. The sound needs weight, warmth and tubes or you might as well be playing a CD.

Gerry Mulligan & Stan Getz - Gerry Mulligan Meets Stan Getz

Reviewed in 2011

  (Item #: mulligerry_2011)

This is a very nice looking Verve Trumpeter Label Mono LP from 1957. Side one is wonderful and has the better sound here. It has more extension up top; the baritone sax is especially well reproduced.

Both sides of course have somewhat tubby bass, the type that characterizes all tube recordings from the ’50s and ’60s. Side two is a bit more veiled. The midrange is as musical as it is on side one but has less top end and therefore comes across as kind of dull. Musical and involving, but not as lively as it could be.

Supposedly the stereo pressings of this album are full of added echo, which is the reason Steve Hoffman chose to release the mono version of the album on gold CD for DCC back in the day. It’s one of our favorite DCC CDs; Steve did his usual top quality mastering of it.

Stan Getz & Charlie Byrd - Jazz Samba

Our Shootout Winner from 2016

  (Item #: getz_jazz_samba_2016)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Jazz Hall of Fame.

TWO INCREDIBLE SIDES on unusually quiet vinyl! We just finished a big shootout for this great album and this copy was a KNOCKOUT. The sound is rich and full with good size to the soundfield. It's very tough to find good sounding Stan Getz records, so if you're a fan I think you'll be quite impressed with the sonics on this pressing. As for the music, it's top notch; All Music Guide gave it a Five Star rating and we agree wholeheartedly!

Japanese Pressing

  (Item #: getz_getzg_jpn_1010)

Sonic Grade: C

Another Audiophile Pressing reviewed.

This is a Minty looking Verve Japanese Import LP. It's not competitive with the best domestic pressings but you could definitely do worse. Trying to find domestic copies that aren't trashed is virtually impossible, so if you're a click and pop counter, this copy may the ticket! Stan Getz is a truly great tenor saxophonist, the cool school's most popular player. This LP is all the evidence you need. Side 1 has those wonderfully relaxed Brazilian tempos and the smooth sax stylings of Stan Getz.

Stan Getz - Getz Au Go Go 1987 Reissue

Isn't This Record Supposed to Be Stereo?

  (Item #: getz_getza_stereo)

As part of our recent shootout for the album we played what turned out to be a later reissue. According to my research it's most likely from the late '70s or early '80s.

As a general rule we make a point to go out of our way to play practically any copy we can get our hands on, in the off chance that a reissue will beat the original. It's happened plenty of times. Those of you with White Hot Stamper shootout winning copies of some of our favorite titles know what I'm talkin' about.

Stan Getz - Getz Au Go Go

Critical Listening Exercise

  (Item #: getz_getza_test)

Another in our series of Home Audio Exercises.

This album is useful as a test disc. The third track on side 2, The Telephone Song, has a breathy vocal by Astrud, soon followed by Getz's saxophone solo. If those two elements in the recording are in balance, your system is working, tonally anyway.

Live and Learn

  (Item #: getz_getza_live_and_learn)

A classic case of Live and Learn. Many years ago we had written:

Of course, you would never know this is a good recording by playing the average domestic copy. This Japanese LP is one of the few pressings that can show you that this wonderful smoky night club jazz LP really can have Demo Disc sound.

Ridiculous, right? Well, at the time we believed it. Now our understanding is quite a bit more sophisticated, in the sense that the Japanese pressing is clearly better than most originals, not all of them.

Stan Getz - Getz Au Go Go

Our Shootout Winner from 2011

  (Item #: getz_getza_2011)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Jazz Hall of Fame.

This WHITE Hot Stamper Stan Getz record has the kind of LIVE JAZZ CLUB SOUND that audiophiles like us (you and me) dream of. More importantly, this ain’t no Jazz at Some Pawnshop -- this is THE REAL THING. Stan Getz, Gary Burton, Kenny Burrell and the lovely Astrud Gilberto, the living embodiment of Cool Jazz, are coming to a listening room near you (assuming you have two hundred and fifty bucks you're not doing anything else with).

Stan Getz - Jazz Classics

Reviewed in 2011

  (Item #: getz_jazzc_2011)

The album contains tracks culled from two different sessions featuring a very young Stan Getz. The sound on the tracks taken from a 1953 session with the Jimmy Raney quintet (tracks one and two on both sides) is amazing! Energetic, tonally balanced, clean and clear -- we've never heard a better sounding Stan Getz recording! Unfortunately, the tracks from the 1949 session with Terry Gibbs, while interesting historically, sound like old 78's -- not our cup of tea.

Stan Getz - Jazz Samba Encore

Our Shootout Winner from 2015

  (Item #: getz_jazz_samba_encore_2015)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Jazz Hall of Fame.

Yet another wonderful Getz Samba record, the third in the series. Some of our faourite music has this Samba syncopation: Sergio Mendes, first and foremost of course, but also Airto, and all the wonderful Getz albums from this period. Their enchanting Brazilian rhythms make their music fun.

The Recordings of Stan Getz

These Four Didn't Make the Grade

  (Item #: getz_stan)

These are just some of the recordings by Stan Getz that we've auditioned recently and found wanting. Without going into specifics we'll just say these albums suffer from poor performances, poor sound, or both, and therefore do not deserve a place in your collection, and may even belong in our Hall of Shame.
