Bryan Ferry - Another Time, Another Place

Our Shootout Winner from 2016

  (Item #: ferryanoth_2016)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

Both sides are blessed with the kind of early '70's Tubey Magical Analog Sound that's been lost to the world of recorded music for decades -- decades I tell you!

Nobody can manage to get a recording to sound like this anymore and it seems as if no one can even remaster a recording like this anymore, if our direct experience with scores of such albums counts as any sort of evidence.

Bryan Ferry - Bete Noire

Our Shootout Winner from 2013

  (Item #: ferrybeten_2013)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

The domestic pressings are Direct Metal Mastered, the imports are not. Not being mastered DMM did not seem to confer any real benefit to the sound, which to us was a bit counterintuitive, but that's the reason we do shootouts, so we know the actual sound of the vinyl rather than the sound our biases would lead us to expect.

Bryan Ferry - Boys And Girls

Our Shootout Winner from 2009

  (Item #: ferryboysa_2009)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

This domestic pressing has STUNNINGLY GOOD SOUND on side two! It's the best we’ve ever heard the album -- super high-resolution transparency coupled with amazing immediacy. And talk about energy -- the sound here positively JUMPS out of the speakers!

This side two blew our minds with its distortion-free sound, transparency and its punchy, note-like bass. The recording space is wall to wall HUGE, with amazing depth and three-dimensionality that's only hinted at by most of the pressings we played. It's meaty and punchy down low and there's plenty of extension up top.

What to Listen For

  (Item #: ferryboysa_wtlf)

Another in our series of Home Audio Exercises with advice on What to Listen For (WTLF) as you critically evaluate your copy of Boys and Girls.

The song Valentine is a key test for side two. Note how processed Ferry's vocals are; on the best copies they will sound somewhat bright. The test is the background singers; they should sound tonally correct and silky sweet. If Ferry sounds correct, they will sound dull, and so will the rest of the side. That processed sound on his vocal is on the tape. Trying to "fix" it will ruin everything.

Bryan Ferry - In Your Mind

A Real Puzzler

  (Item #: ferryinyou)

This British original pressing caused me a great deal of consternation. I’ve always been a big fan of this album -- so much so that I even have the CD of it in my car -- and I was under the impression that the sound was quite good. But playing a few British originals like this one caused me to have my doubts. The sound was aggressive and hard. I suspected the absolute phase might be reversed, and sure enough it was. But even after correcting for the improper phase the sound is not what I would have hoped for. It's a bit "grungy" and lacks the extreme highs that would sweeten the overall presentation.

Bryan Ferry - The Bride Stripped Bare

British Guy, British Pressing... Right?

  (Item #: ferrybride_myth)

Nope. It’s just another Record Myth.

We were a bit surprised to find that the domestic copies we played were clearly better sounding than the UK imports. It may be counterintuitive but these are exactly the kinds of things you find out when doing blinded shootouts. We have little use for intuitions (UK recording, UK pressing) and rules of thumb (original = better sound). Hard data -- the kind you get from actually playing the records -- trumps them all.

Bryan Ferry - The Bride Stripped Bare

Our Shootout Winner from 2013

  (Item #: ferrybride_2013)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock Hall of Fame.

It's been years since I last played this album, and I'm happy, ecstatic even, to report that it sounds far better than I remember it sounding. In the old days I recall it as somewhat dry, flat and transistory. Now it's BIG and BOLD, revealing a band that's on fire in the studio.

This White Hot side two had by far the most energy of any side we played, showing us just what a monster rocker this album can be when it's mastered and pressed right. The reviews were mixed when the album was released in 1978 but time has been kind to it -- after hearing the killer copies I would rank it up at the top with the best of Ferry's and Roxy's work.

Bryan Ferry - These Foolish Things

Our Shootout Winner from 2010

  (Item #: ferrythese_2010)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

AN AMAZING COPY OF THIS VERY FUN ALBUM! We had a nice stack of British copies and this one had an unbeatable A+++ side one backed with a killer A++ - A+++ side two, both on very quiet vinyl. Anyone who digs Roxy Music or Bowie's Pin-Ups is going to find a lot to like here. Check out the cool cover of A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall that kicks off side one!

Roxy Music - Avalon

Our Shootout Winner from 2011

  (Item #: roxymavalo_2011)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

This British original EG Super DeLuxe pressing of Avalon has White Hot Stamper sound on BOTH sides. We guarantee you have never begun to hear this music sound this clear, open and present. Right from the start the synths on track one were breathy and floating on a bed of cool studio air -- we knew this side was going to be awesome, and of course the more we played it the better it got. Nothing could touch it.

  (Item #: roxymavalo_depth)

Another in our series of Home Audio Exercises with advice on What to Listen For (WTLF) as you critically evaluate your copy of Avalon.

The best British original Super DeLuxe pressings of Avalon are sweet and silky, big and lively, with the kind of sound that drives us audiophiles wild -- which of course it the main reason this album was on Extra Heavy Rotation at most stereo stores back in the day.

A Simply Vinyl Mastering Success? Or Is It?

  (Item #: roxymavalo_scorecard)

Sonic Grade: B (I'm guessing)

[These notes were written many years ago, which means that even we may not agree with some or all of the commentary.]

This version just plain KILLS most domestic copies and probably quite a few Brit ones too. Simply Vinyl did a superb job here.

Correction: an unnamed mastering engineer at the label did a superb job. Simply Vinyl isn’t in the business of mastering ANYTHING. They leave that up to the pros at the record labels. Sometimes those guys screw it up and sometimes they get it right.

For Your Information

  (Item #: roxymavalo_jpn)

This Minty looking Japanese Import LP is substantially better than any domestic copy we've ever played. It's not in the same league as our Hot Stamper pressings, but it's pretty good all the same. Side two is ever so slightly dull when compared to side one.

Roxy Music - Country Life

Our Shootout Winner from 2015

  (Item #: roxymcount_2015)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock Hall of Fame.

Many of the best songs Ferry ever wrote and Roxy ever played are on this album. Musically it's right up there with the first album and Siren, both early '70s Art Rock landmarks.

In our experience the right British original Sunray (Pink Rim) Island pressing will always win the shootout if you have a good pile of copies to play. There are some bad sounding Island LPs out there, so don’t assume the Sunray is the answer. It’s potentially the right answer. Without at least five copies in hand you won't know for sure whether the copy you like is truly a Hot Stamper or not-that-hot-of-a-stamper.

Roxy Music - Flesh + Blood

Our Shootout Winner from 2013

  (Item #: roxymflesh_2013)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock Hall of Fame.

The British Original Polydor Super Deluxe pressings are the only way to go on this album. No domestic pressing or other import was better than passable; we know, we played them. The British LP is cut by one of my favorite mastering houses in England, which no doubt accounts -- at least partly -- for the excellent sound.

Roxy Music - For Your Pleasure

Our Shootout Winner from 2017

  (Item #: roxymforyo_2017)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

This album is a MASTERPIECE of Art Rock, Glam Rock and Bent Rock all rolled into one. Spacious, dynamic, present, with HUGE MEATY BASS and tons of energy, the sound is every bit as good as the music. (At least on this copy it is. That's precisely what Hot Stampers are all about.)

Roxy Music - Roxy Music

Our Shootout Winner from 2011

  (Item #: roxymroxym_2011)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock Hall of Fame.

The legendary first Roxy Music album returns to the site in tip top White Hot Stamper form, boasting no less than an incredible A+++ White Hot Side Two coupled with a superb A++ Super Hot Side One! Folks, it doesn't get much better than this!

In considering both music and sound, this is arguably the best record the band ever made. Siren, Avalon and Country Life are all musically sublime, but the first album has the kind of dynamic, energetic, POWERFUL sound that their other records simply never show us. And we've played them by the dozens, so there's a pretty good chance we will never find copies with the abundant richness and power we found here.

Roxy Music - Roxy Music

A Heavy Vinyl Winner!

  (Item #: roxymroxym_scorecard)

Sonic Grade: B-

Hey, this is a good sounding pressing! I had to pull out my best imports to beat it, which they did handily of course, but the typical audiophile trying to find a pressing superior to this one will have to do a fair bit of homework in order to succeed. We had multiple copies of Islands, Polydors, Atcos, Reprises and one copy of the Heavy Vinyl import I used to like. This pressing trounced most of them, and it’s cheap.

Roxy Music - Siren

British Band, British Pressing, Right?

  (Item #: roxymsiren_2015)

Nope. It’s just another Record Myth.

Of all the Roxy albums (with the exception of Avalon) this is probably the best way "in" to the band's music. The earlier albums are more raucous, the later ones more rhythmically driven -- Siren catches them at their peak, with, as other reviewers have noted, all good songs and no bad ones.

Roxy Music - Siren

Our Shootout Winner from 2016

  (Item #: roxymsiren_2016)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

Siren is one of our favorite Roxy albums, right up there with the first album and well ahead of the commercially appealing Avalon. After reading a rave review in Rolling Stone of the album back in 1975 I took the plunge, bought a copy at my local Tower Records and instantly fell in love with it. As is my wont, I then proceeded to work my way through their earlier catalog, which was quite an adventure. It takes scores of plays to understand where the band is coming from on the early albums and what it is they're trying to do. Now I listen to each of the first five releases on a regular basis.

Roxy Music - Stranded

Our Shootout Winner from 2016

  (Item #: roxymstran_2016)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock Hall of Fame.

Stranded is one of the higher quality recordings by the band, coming in second for sonics only to the first album, which is really saying something considering that the first album is a Top 100 title. The Tubey Magic on the early albums has to be heard to be believed.

Roxy Music

Rhett Davies, Yanick Etienne and the Making of Avalon

  (Item #: roxymavalo_avalon)

I consider Roxy Music to be one of the greatest Art Rock bands in the history of the world. The general public and most audiophiles would no doubt cast their vote for AVALON as the band's masterpiece. (The long and involved story of the making of the album can be seen below.) I much prefer their eponymous first album, Stranded, Country Life and Siren to the more "accessible" music found on Avalon. To be fair, that's splitting hairs, because any of those five titles are absolute Must Own Albums that belong in any serious popular music collection.
