Super Hot Stamper

Rod Stewart
Gasoline Alley

  (Item #: stewagasol_1802_1907)

Our Price: $199.99
Sale Price: $149.00 (You save $50.99 / 25%)

  • Excellent Double Plus (A++) sound from start to finish - these UK pressings are ridiculously hard to find in this kind of shape with top quality sound
  • These early Vertigo sides are rich, smooth and Tubey Magical yet still relatively clean, clear and spacious
  • Absolutely as QUIET as any pressing we have played - it is the exceptionally rare copy that will play with audiophile quality surfaces
  • 5 Stars: "Of course, being a rocker at heart, Stewart doesn't let these songs become limp acoustic numbers -- these rock harder than any fuzz-guitar workout. The drums crash and bang, the acoustic guitars are pounded with a vengeance -- it's a wild, careening sound that is positively joyous with its abandon."

Super Hot Stamper

The Faces
A Nod Is As Good As A Wink

  (Item #: facesanodi_1811_1904-)

Our Price: $69.99

  • Two outstanding Double Plus (A++) sides mean The Faces' British Blues Rock is alive and well on this vintage all analog pressing
  • Rich and solid, yet fairly spacious and transparent, this early Green Label pressing did well in our shootout by having a combination of weight and clarity that really worked for us
  • 5 stars: The Faces' third album finally gave the group their long-awaited hit single in "Stay with Me," helping send the album into the Billboard Top Ten... [It's] the tightest record the band ever made. It's another classic — and when you consider that the band also had Long Player to their credit and had their hands all over Every Picture in 1971, it's hard to imagine another band or singer having a year more extraordinary as this."

Jeff Beck - Truth

Our Shootout Winner from 2016

  (Item #: beck_truth_2016)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock Hall of Fame.

One of the most surprising things we learned during this shootout was how well recorded the album is. It's yet another triumph from one of our favorite engineers, KEN SCOTT.

An interesting bit of trivia: most side twos earned a sonic grade that was a full plus higher than any given copy's grade for side one. Side two most of the time just plain sounds better than side one, so when evaluating your copy be sure to check side two first to hear what is probably going to be the best sound on the album.

John Baldry - It Ain't Easy

Our Shootout Winner from 2017

  (Item #: baldritain_2017)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

A few years ago while I was working on the site I had music on youtube playing. The song "Flying" came on from the It Ain't Easy album, and when the chorus came in I could not believe how big, rich and powerful it sounded -- this, on computer speakers!

I tracked down my copy of the album, the domestic Green Label WB pressing with a different cover you no doubt have seen in your local record store bin and threw it on the table for a quick listen. In moments it was obvious that my domestic original was a big step down sonically from what I imagined the source for the youtube video sound would have been.

Rod Stewart - Atlantic Crossing

Our Shootout Winner from 2014

  (Item #: stewaatlan_2014)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

This copy just murdered the competition. The last consistently good Rod Stewart album? It gets my vote.

The copies we liked best were the biggest and richest, and the least thin and dry. Many of the brighter copies also had sibilance problems which the richer and tubier ones do not.

Rod Stewart - Every Picture Tells A Story

Our Four Plus Shootout Winner from 2016

  (Item #: stewaevery_2016)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock Hall of Fame and another in the long list of recordings that really comes alive when you Turn Up Your Volume.

A knockout Top Copy, with a side one so jaw-droppingly amazing that we awarded it the rare Four Plus (A++++) grade. The sound is incredibly rich, full-bodied and open with excellent clarity -- you will be FLOORED.

Rod Stewart - Every Picture Tells A Story

Our Shootout Winner from 2009

  (Item #: stewaevery_2009)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock Hall of Fame.

MASTER TAPE SOUND FROM START TO FINISH on this stunning copy of Rod Stewart's masterpiece! We just finished another massive shootout for this album, and this was the copy that completely knocked us out. It's an original Mercury pressing that earned an A+++ grade on BOTH sides. You probably had no idea how amazing this album could sound on the right pressing, because most copies out there just don't do it. Maggie May is KILLER on this one.

Not too many of our Hot Stamper titles are going to ROCK you the way this one does.

Rod Stewart - Every Picture Tells A Story

His Best Sounding Album Bar None

  (Item #: stewaevery_loud)

I Know I’m Losing You ROCKS AS HARD as any song from the period, with DEMO DISC SOUND. If you have BIG DYNAMIC SPEAKERS and the power to drive them to serious listening levels, you will be blown away by the power of this recording. You know what this album is? It's the Nirvana Nevermind of the early '70s. It has that kind of power in the bass and drums.

But it also has beautifully realized acoustic guitars and mandolins, something that virtually no recording for the last twenty years can claim. In that sense it towers over Nevermind, an album I hold in very high esteem.

Rod Stewart - Every Picture Tells A Story

Test for Proper Tonal Balance

  (Item #: stewaevery_test)

Another in our series of Home Audio Exercises.

One note on how to tell if you have a tonally balanced copy, at least on side two. Maggie May has multi-overdubbed, close-miked mandolins that should have strong midrange presence and an especially extended, harmonically correct top end. As soon as that song ends, a very sweet, smooth guitar opens the next track, Mandolin Wind. The two songs lean towards opposite ends of the tonal balance spectrum, but on a good copy, both of them sound right. One's a little darker, one's a little brighter, but they should both be right if your system is tonally balanced.

Rod Stewart - Never A Dull Moment

Our Shootout Winner from 2010

  (Item #: stewanever_2010)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock Hall of Fame and another in the long list of recordings that really comes alive when you Turn Up Your Volume.

The credit must go to the engineering of MIKE BOBAK for the DEMO DISC SOUND. We just finished our most comprehensive shootout ever for the album, culling the best sounding dozen from about twenty five entrants, and this copy just plain kicked all their butts, earning our highest grade on side one (A+++).

British Pressing Debunked

  (Item #: stewanever_brit_2010)

Sonic Grade: F

A Hall of Shame pressing on the silver and black label Mercury British Import LP.

The domestic pressings are the only way to go on this album and Every Picture Tells a Story. Avoid the imports at any price. They are clearly made from dub tapes.

DCC Debunked

  (Item #: stewanever_dcc_)

Sonic Grade: F

A Hall of Shame pressing on Heavy Vinyl from DCC.

We hadn’t played the DCC in a very long time, so we offered a special guarantee for the Hot Stamper pressing we had listed:

Better than the DCC? Some people think so; without both records side by side I can’t say which I would prefer, but this record sure sounds amazingly good to me. Zero distortion! Music in your room!

Rod Stewart - Never A Dull Moment

What to Listen For

  (Item #: stewanever_wtlf)

Another in our series of Home Audio Exercises with advice on What to Listen For (WTLF) as you critically evaluate your copy of NADM.

Most copies tend to be dull, veiled, thick and congested, but the trick with the better pressings is being able to separate out the various parts with ease and hear right INTO the music.

Just listen to those meaty electric guitars, the note-like bass or that amazing snare drum sound with such a huge THWACK -- that's the raw power of rock n' roll, baby.

The Faces - A Nod Is As Good As A Wink

Our Shootout Winner from 2010

  (Item #: facesanodi_2010)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

This Warner Bros. Green Label LP has a STUNNING SIDE ONE backed with MASTER TAPE SOUND ON SIDE TWO! If you like your hard rock dirty and bluesy, you can’t do much better than this record. You’re going to freak out over the meaty guitars, the HUGE bass, and the ROTM (Right On The Money) vocals. We played a ton of copies and most of them couldn't hold a candle to this one.

The Faces - Long Player

Their Best Sounding Album - Best Music Too

  (Item #: faceslongp_2010)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock Hall of Fame and another in the long list of recordings that really comes alive when you Turn Up Your Volume.

We knew this album could sound good, but back in the day we sure didn't know it could sound like this. The best pressings of this album have amazing live-in-the-studio sound that conveys completely the raw power of one of the hardest rockin' bands of all time.

Both musically and sonically I don't think the group ever recorded a better album than this one.
