Are All MoFis Created Equal?

A Pair of Pink Floyd LPs Proved They Aren’t

  (Item #: pinkfdarks_mofi_2016)

Many audiophiles are still under the misapprehension that Mobile Fidelity, with their strict "quality control", managed to eliminate pressing variations of the kind we discuss endlessly on the site.

Such is simply not the case, and it's child's play to demonstrate how false this way of thinking is, assuming you have these four things: good cleaning fluids and a machine, multiple copies of the same record, a reasonably revealing stereo, and two working ears. With all four the reality of pressing variations for ALL pressings is both obvious and incontrovertible.

David Gilmour - About Face

Our Shootout Winner from 2015

  (Item #: gilmoabout_2015)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

For my money this is a far better sounding record than Pink Floyd's eighties releases The Final Cut (1983) or A Momentary Lapse of Reason (1987), and the music is pretty darn good as well. If you're a Floyd fan I think you'll enjoy revisiting the album, especially when it sounds as phenomenal as this one does.

Hot Stampers in this case give you a bigger soundfield, more richness and fullness, tighter bass, and more transparency.

Our Shootout Winner from 2013

  (Item #: pinkfatomh_2013)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

This is an album that almost never sounds good. We've spent a ton of money over the years chasing British originals and various other pressings looking for that Pink Floyd magic, but most copies were terribly disappointing sonically. This was the best copy we've heard in many years -- richer, bigger sounding and more solid than everything else we were able to put against it. It's far from a Demo Disc but if you like this music I don't think you can find better sound for it.

Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon

Quick and Easy Listening Test

  (Item #: pinkfdarks_test_2014)

Another in our series of Home Audio Exercises.

Breathe is my favorite test track for side one for any version of Dark Side Of The Moon, Half-Speed or otherwise. When the voices come in about halfway through the song, you can tell that most copies are too bright simply by listening to the vocals on this track. The cymbals might sound wonderful; lots of other instruments might sound wonderful; and there might be plenty of ambience, detail and transparency. But all of that counts for nothing if the voices don't sound right. And on most copies the voices sound bright, aggressive, grainy and transitory. (This is the case with the new 180 gram 30th Anniversary copy I regret to say.)

This Harvest Green Lable British Import pressing has a side one that goes FAR beyond anything we’ve ever heard for this album.   (Item #: pinkfmeddl_2012)

Side two is where the 20+ minute prog epic Echoes is found, and the sound of it on this copy is MINDBLOWINGLY GOOD. If you're the kind of guy who will get a thrill from hearing Pink Floyd bangin' out one of their heaviest psych jams with top quality sonics, this copy will completely knock you out. And side one is no slouch either -- it sounds amazing as well! Drop the needle on ’One of These Days’ and listen to how HUGE the soundfield is, it’s big, wide and deep so you can really hear into the music.

Pink Floyd - Meddle

MoFi Debunked

  (Item #: pinkfmeddl_debunk)

Sonic Grade: D

A Hall of Shame pressing and another MoFi LP debunked.

Same problems as the MoFi Thick As a Brick: The MoFi is super-TRANSPARENT and OPEN, and the top end will be lush and extended. If you prize clarity, this is the one!

But if you prize clarity at the expense of everything else, you are seriously missing the boat on Meddle (and of course Thick As A Brick too). The MoFi is all mids and highs with almost nothing going on below.

EXCELLENT SOUND and some seriously strange music! This obviously isn’t Floyd’s greatest album, but we still found a lot to like about this record and specifically this copy. It’s a British Import Harvest Green Label pressing that rates close to A+ on both sides -- slightly better on side one, not quite there on side two. Those of you who enjoy Meddle will certainly get a lot out of this one.

Pink Floyd - The Dark Side of the Moon

Expanding Space Itself

  (Item #: pinkfdarks_top_ten)

Recently we played a copy with all the presence, all the richness, all the size and all the energy we ever hoped to hear from a top quality pressing of Dark Side of the Moon. It did it ALL and then some. The raging guitar solos (there are three of them) on Money seemed to somehow expand the system itself, making it bigger and more powerful than I have ever heard. Even our best copies of Blood Sweat and Tears have never managed to create such a huge space with that kind of raw power. This copy broke through all the barriers, taking the system to an entirely new level of sound.

This Minty EMI Harvest German Import LP takes this album to a WHOLE NEW LEVEL. Both of these White Hot sides have HUGE, room-filling, hi-definition sound with all the Tubey Magic you could ever hope for. The transparency and the clarity are mind-boggling! Just listen to how clear the clocks are on Time, how breathy the vocals are on Breathe, how textured the synthesizers are and how silky the top end is from the beginning of the album all the way to the end.

Sonic Grade: D- to B+ (depending)

Now that we’ve had a chance to hear scores of the best import pressings of Dark Side, we know -- better than anyone, if I can be so bold -- just how good that record can sound. No MoFi is ever going to compete with one our our White Hot Stamper pressings -- they have energy and rock power that is nothing less than astonishing.

Playing so many MoFi copies this time around made one thing very clear: the average MoFi pressing of Dark Side is really a piece of junk. So COMPRESSED, so THIN, so PHONY in the upper midrange and BOOSTED on the top end. The typical MoFi is as artificial sounding as the average store bought CD. (Or phony audiophile recording by the likes of Chesky or Audioquest.)

Pink Floyd - The Dark Side of the Moon

Heavy Vinyl Debunked

  (Item #: pinkfdarks_debunk)

Sonic Grade: F

A Hall of Shame Pressing and another Heavy Vinyl Rock and Pop LP debunked.

The 30th Anniversary Heavy Vinyl pressing is TOO BRIGHT. There is a boost in the top end, probably right around the 12K region, which is a very poor mastering choice the late Doug Sax apparently made, a choice that is surely not doing this recording any favors. In the case of this new pressing in fact, it’s positively ruinous.

Pink Floyd - The Wall

Bad Sounding on Japanese Import Vinyl

  (Item #: pinkfthewa_jpn)

Sonic Grade: F

Presenting the newest member of our Hall of Shame.

This Japanese Import is one of the dullest, muddiest, worst sounding copies of The Wall we have ever played. It is clearly made from a dub tape.

And somehow this pressing ended up as a TAS List Super Disc. The copy Harry played surely must have sounded a whole lot better than this one.

And the CBS Half-Speed is every bit as bad! Two Hall of Shame titles for the price of one.

Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here

Listening in Depth

  (Item #: pinkfwishy_depth)

Presenting another entry in our extensive Listening in Depth series with advice on what to listen for as you critically evaluate side one of your copy of Wish You Were Here.

For those of you who aren't familiar with the album, Pink Floyd managed to record one of the most amazing sounding records in the history of rock music. The song Wish You Were Here starts out with radio noise and other sound effects, then suddenly an acoustic guitar appears, floating in the middle of your living room between the speakers, clear as a bell and as real as you have ever heard. It's obviously an "effect," but for us audiophiles it's pure ear candy.

Amazing! Triple Plus (A+++) sound on both sides, making this a Top Copy that will knock you out. The sound is, in a word, HUGE. You won't believe how full, rich and clear this one is.

This copy has the size, energy and presence to bring the music out of the speakers and right into your listening room!

Pink Floyd The Wall

... The best record ever played on my setup ...

  (Item #: pinkfthewa_letter1208)

Our admittedly skeptical new customer Ebbe decided to take a chance with one of our pricey Hot Stamper copies of The Wall. As expected (by us, not him) he heard the amazing sound that only a true Hot Stamper pressing is capable of. Experts? We say bring it on!

Hi Todd,

YES! No doubt - the best record (or music) ever played on my set up. I had a few experts in for evaluating -- they all (like me) were fairly skeptical. But after just a few tracks everybody was convinced... WOW. You describe the album very well on your site. Another thing is how easy and smooth everything sounds and all the acoustic instruments... I could go on for a long time! As you understand I’m very happy with this copy.

... And the winner is: Surprise -- The Hot Stamper!

  (Item #: pinkfwishy_testimonial)

One of our best customers, Roger, received his $150 Hot Stamper ’Wish You Were Here’ and went straight to work comparing it with the various other pressings he owned: two different CBS Half Speeds. The not-so-shocking results follow ...

Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon

... TRULY one of those rare experiences...

  (Item #: pinkfdarks_testimonial_2014)

Dan, our letter writer, is a new convert to the world of Hot Stampers. Although his system is modest by his own admission, the sound he was able to conjure up in his living room was "...a revelation..."

A good Dark Side can have that effect on you.

Roger Waters - The Pros and Cons of Hitch Hiking

Our Shootout Winner from 2012

  (Item #: waterprosa_2012)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

We paired together our best sounding side one with an equally impressive side two from a different copy to make this White Hot Stamper 2-pack for Roger Waters debut. That gives you A+++ sound and quiet vinyl for both sides! Let me tell you, it is DIFFICULT to find copies of this album that sound as good and plays as quietly as the two White Hot sides in this set. Those of you who like Floyd's The Final Cut will probably get a lot out of this one.

Which One's Pink?

And What Do All Those Numbers Mean?

  (Item #: stampers)

An erstwhile customer sent us an email a while back asking this question: "What is the FULL stamper matrix for this record... all the way around the dead wax?"

I replied that we never give out stamper numbers for the records we sell. The only way to find out the stampers for our records is to buy them. And while we're on the subject, you might enjoy reading this commentary I wrote a while back pointing out how misleading the matrix numbers can be: The Book of Hot Stampers.
