White Hot Stamper (with Issues)

Phil Collins
Face Value

  (Item #: collifacev_1810_1906)

Our Price: $119.99

  • This incredible UK pressing boasts Shootout Winning Triple Plus (A+++) sound on both sides (but there are some condition issues)
  • Hugh Padgham discovered an amazing drum sound on Peter Gabriel's 3rd album, and he really went to town with it on this one, Collins' debut (and Masterpiece)
  • His most consistent songwriting and many of his biggest hits - In The Air Tonight sounds amazing, but practically everything here does
  • 5 stars: "Phil Collins' first solo album, 1981's Face Value, was a long time coming, but it proved worth the wait... He went on to become a huge star, with loads more hits, but Face Value stands as his masterpiece and one of the finest moments of the '80s musical landscape."

Phil Collins - Face Value

Whomp Factor

  (Item #: collifacev_whomp)

Another in our series of Home Audio Exercises with advice on what you should be listening for when critically evaluating your copy (or ours) of the album.

Until we heard some of the better copies we were simply not able to appreciate just how important good bass definition and serious weight down low are to the sound of this record. When the bass is wooly or thin, as it is on so many copies -- not clear, not deep, not full enough -- it throws the rest of the mix off. When the bass is huge and powerful the music itself becomes huge and powerful.

Judy Collins - Who Knows Where The Time Goes

The Gold Labels Are the Best, Right?

  (Item #: colliwhokn_original)

Nope. It’s just another one of them pesky Record Myths.

As often happens in these shootouts, the copy that's supposed to be the most Tubey Magical and "Real" -- most audiophiles would nominate the Gold Label original as their first choice on both counts -- turns out, counterintuitively, to be somewhat flat, lean and "modern" sounding. We were as surprised as anyone (even though we shouldn't be by now). We're fans of early label Elektra pressings as a rule; on this title they usually left us wanting more.

Miles Davis
Birth of the Cool

  (Item #: davisbirth_1810_1908)

Our Price: $149.99

  • An outstanding copy of this Groundbreaking Jazz Classic, with seriously good Double Plus (A++) sound throughout
  • This vintage mono pressing will show you just how well-recorded these 1949-50 sessions were
  • It's the records they made from these tapes (more often from the dubs of them) that have given everybody the wrong idea about these wonderful sounding recordings
  • 5 stars: "So dubbed because these three sessions are where the sound known as cool jazz essentially formed, Birth of the Cool remains one of the defining, pivotal moments in jazz. This is where the elasticity of bop was married with skillful, big-band arrangements and a relaxed, subdued mood that made it all seem easy, even at its most intricate."

Our Shootout Winner from 2011

This is Eno's Masterpiece as well as a Desert Island Disc for yours truly. On the right pressing this is a Twisted Pop Demo Disc like nothing you have ever heard. If you have a big speaker and the kind of high quality playback that is capable of unraveling the most complicated musical creations, with all the weight and power of live music, this is the record that will make all your audio effort and expense worthwhile.

Listening in Depth

  (Item #: eno__takin_listen)

Presenting another entry in our extensive Listening in Depth series.

This album is all about sound, pure sound itself if you will: the sound of the instruments, their textures, and the textures of the soundscape Eno has created for them.

With the subtle harmonics of Eno's treated sounds captured onto vinyl intact, the magic of the experience far exceeds just another batch of catchy songs with clever arrangements. It truly becomes an immersive experience; sounds you've never heard in quite that way draw you into their world, each sound more interesting than the next.

Genesis - Abacab

Our Shootout Winner from 2014

  (Item #: genesabaca_2014)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

Another top recording from Hugh Padgham, the man who engineered The Police's best sounding album, Synchronicity, as well as Phil Collins' first album. He gets the Big, Rich, Smooth Rock Sound during the '80s like few others we know of. Tons of bass too. We also quite like the big drums and meaty guitars he was able to bring to XTC's English Settlement (a record we just never see anymore; wonder where they all went?).

GENESIS AT LAST! We've been trying to find Hot Stamper copies of this album for years, but it is BEYOND DIFFICULT to find copies of this album that sound great and play quietly. Here's an amazing Trick Of the Tail that absolutely blows the typical pressing out of the water! The sound is BIG, BOLD and OPEN, breaking free from the grainy and cloudly qualities that screw up the average copy.

MoFi Debunked

  (Item #: genesatric_mfsl_debunk_2015)

Sonic Grade: F

A Hall of Shame pressing and another Half Speed debunked.

The last time I played the MoFi I could not believe how ridiculously COMPRESSED it was. On top of that, the midrange is badly sucked out (as is the case with most MoFi's) making the sound as dead as dead can be. You think 180 gram records are lifeless? Play this piece of crap and see just how bad an audiophile record can sound.

Our Shootout Winner from 2013

  (Item #: genesfoxtr_2013)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

After struggling with this album for YEARS, Foxtrot Hot Stamper are back! It is INSANELY difficult to find good sound for this album. We've laid out hundreds of bucks on clear Brit originals over the years hoping to find that magical pressing, but could not manage to get the kind of sound we were hoping for. We the started bringing in every variety of pressing we could find and finally found a few copies that actually delivered. Here's the best of them all -- a White Hot Stamper with an A+++ side one, and A++ to A+++ side two and quiet vinyl. Genesis fans, the long wait is over -- it's time to hear this album sound right.

Our Shootout Winner from 2012

  (Item #: geneslambl_2012)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

This Charisma double LP was the uncontested winner of our shootout, earning a whopping 12 PLUSES across all four sides! In fact, this is BY FAR the best we've ever heard this album sound. After our last shootout -- in which no side earned a top grade -- we had almost given up hope of finding a true White Hot Stamper copy. Well, folks, our perseverance has finally paid off and this copy is the proof! When you find a killer pressing this complex, theatrical music really WORKS.

Our Shootout Winner from 2011

  (Item #: genesnurse_2011)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

This QUIET Super Hot Stamper is actually on the Charisma Blue label, not the original, but it gave our best Pink label copies a run for their money, with superb bass, real rock energy and lovely midrange transparency. For fans of the Classic Lineup involving Phil Collins and Steve Hackett -- this being the first album with them on board -- side one of this copy will show you a Nursery Cryme the likes of which you have never heard. (If you own the Classic Heavy Vinyl pressing you are really in for a shock. That pressing is a smeary lifeless mess next to this LP.)

Genesis - Seconds Out

Our Shootout Winner from 2016

  (Item #: genessecon_2015)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

STUNNING SOUND FOR ALL FOUR SIDES! This live album from 1977 has some of the best Genesis sound we've heard. Their studio recordings are often a bit flat and dull, so it's really a treat to hear those songs with this kind of big, open, dynamic sound! Phil Collins handles the lead vocals here, but he does a great job even on the Peter Gabriel material.

Our Shootout Winner from 2012

  (Item #: genesselli_2012)

TWO EXCELLENT SIDES on this Charisma Import pressing! This is only the second Hot Stamper copy of Selling England By The Pound to EVER hit our site, and with both sides rating at least A++, it's a monster! It's beyond difficult to find good sounding copies of the early Genesis albums, but we managed to pull together enough clean copies to get this shootout going and eventually found a few copies that got the job done. The overall sound is big, open, transparent and tubey.

Bonnie Raitt - Sweet Forgiveness

Our Shootout Winner from 2010

  (Item #: raittsweet_2010)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

This White Hot Stamper side one had the kind of sound that just JUMPS out of the speakers! This side one had more of everything: more size and weight. more separation, more ambience, more vocal dynamics, more presence, more bottom end (which is unusual in that most copies of this album tends to be bass shy); in short, more LIFE. This copy, more than any other we played, showed us just how good the master tapes must be.
