Genesis - Foxtrot

Our Shootout Winner from 2013

  (Item #: genesfoxtr_2013)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

After struggling with this album for YEARS, Foxtrot Hot Stamper are back! It is INSANELY difficult to find good sound for this album. We've laid out hundreds of bucks on clear Brit originals over the years hoping to find that magical pressing, but could not manage to get the kind of sound we were hoping for. We the started bringing in every variety of pressing we could find and finally found a few copies that actually delivered. Here's the best of them all -- a White Hot Stamper with an A+++ side one, and A++ to A+++ side two and quiet vinyl. Genesis fans, the long wait is over -- it's time to hear this album sound right.

Genesis - Live

Reviewed in 2010

  (Item #: geneslive_2010)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

Superb sounding but somewhat noisy British Original (or what appears to be) pressing on the blue Charisma label. This album sounds RIGHT ON THE MONEY. I don’t think you can find a better sounding version than this one.

Genesis - Nursery Cryme

Classic Records Debunked

  (Item #: genesnurse_debunk)

Sonic Grade: F

A Hall of Shame pressing and another Classic Records LP debunked.

The Classic Heavy Vinyl pressing is a smeary lifeless mess next to one of our Hot Stamper pressings.

Genesis - Nursery Cryme

Our Shootout Winner from 2011

  (Item #: genesnurse_2011)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

This QUIET Super Hot Stamper is actually on the Charisma Blue label, not the original, but it gave our best Pink label copies a run for their money, with superb bass, real rock energy and lovely midrange transparency. For fans of the Classic Lineup involving Phil Collins and Steve Hackett -- this being the first album with them on board -- side one of this copy will show you a Nursery Cryme the likes of which you have never heard. (If you own the Classic Heavy Vinyl pressing you are really in for a shock. That pressing is a smeary lifeless mess next to this LP.)

Genesis - The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway

Our Shootout Winner from 2012

  (Item #: geneslambl_2012)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

This Charisma double LP was the uncontested winner of our shootout, earning a whopping 12 PLUSES across all four sides! In fact, this is BY FAR the best we've ever heard this album sound. After our last shootout -- in which no side earned a top grade -- we had almost given up hope of finding a true White Hot Stamper copy. Well, folks, our perseverance has finally paid off and this copy is the proof! When you find a killer pressing this complex, theatrical music really WORKS.

Peter Gabriel - Passion

Not Recommended (for Sound)

  (Item #: gabripassi)

Sonic Grade: D

A Hall of Shame pressing. Never heard a copy sound good.

Based on what little I’ve heard of the Classic series, I’m going to bet this has better sound than the heavy vinyl reissue they did.

Peter Gabriel - Peter Gabriel (3rd)

Our Shootout Winner from 2010

  (Item #: gabrigabr3_2010)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

A+++ MASTER TAPE SOUND ON BOTH SIDES! This smokin' hot British pressing just couldn't be beat in our huge (and very enjoyable) shootout. The sound on this bad boy positively JUMPS out of the speakers and fills the room! Both sides are incredibly big and bold with superb clarity, amazing transparency, considerable dynamics and loads of energy. The sound is ridiculously full-bodied with texture and weight to all the various elements. If you're a fan of this album, widely regarded as Gabriel's masterpiece, your mind is going to be BLOWN.

Peter Gabriel - Peter Gabriel (Security)

Our Shootout Winner from 2009

  (Item #: gabrisecur_2009)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock Hall of Fame and another in the long list of recordings that really comes alive when you Turn Up Your Volume.

Our first Hot Stamper shootout for Security is finally here, and man does this album sound better than I remember it from back in the ’70s when I first played a copy. Stereos have come a long way since then, along with a host of other things that help records sound better, such as cleaning fluids, room treatments and all the rest.

Peter Gabriel - Peter Gabriel

Our Shootout Winner from 2011

  (Item #: gabrigabr2_2011)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock Hall of Fame and a Forgotten Classic from Peter Gabriel.

This British Charisma Pink Label original has As Good As It Gets (AGAIG) White Hot Stamper sound for side one! And mostly quiet vinyl on both sides. Man, does it ever ROCK. The sound just jumps out of the speakers.

The overall sound is rich, warm, and full-bodied with incredibly punchy drums. We just could not believe how right this copy sounded -- we rated it A+++ for its tonally correct, super-low distortion Master Tape Sound.

Peter Gabriel - Peter Gabriel

Classic Records Debunked

  (Item #: gabrigabr1_classic)

Sonic Grade: D

Another addition to our Hall of Shame from one of our favorite whipping boys here at Better Records, the late but hardly lamented Classic Records.

Bernie Grundman's mastering approach for the first PG album is a disaster -- brighter and cleaner, which turns out to be precisely the wrong sound for the music.

Direct Disk Labs Debunked

  (Item #: gabrigabr1_dd_labs)

Sonic Grade: D

Another Half Speed Mastered Record that belongs in our Hall of Shame

The Direct Disk Labs half-speed here is thick, compressed and lifeless, though fairly rich. You could do worse I suppose, but too much of the life of the music will be lost when playing their remastered pressing.

Peter Gabriel - Peter Gabriel

Our Shootout Winner from 2014

  (Item #: gabrigabr1_2014)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

Unlike any that follow, the sound varies greatly from track to track on the first PG album, as does the music. You know you have a good copy when the best sounding tracks sound their best. That may seem like a tautology but is in fact the only way to judge a side when the songs sound this different from one another.

On side one the fourth track, Excuse Me, with its barbershop quartet harmonies, has potentially Demo Disc Quality Sound.

Peter Gabriel - Shaking the Tree

Recommended UK Press

  (Item #: gabrishaki_2011)

New British import pressings with EXCELLENT SOUND.

There is not a track here that wouldn't KILL the sound of that track found on any of the Classic Heavy Vinyl pressings in a head to head shootout. And if you don't agree we are more than happy to take this copy back and refund your money.

Peter Gabriel - So

Listening in Depth

  (Item #: gabriso_depth)

Another in our series of Home Audio Exercises with advice on What to Listen For (WTLF) as you critically evaluate your copy of So.

With a digital recording such as this, the margin for mastering error is very slim. Most copies just aren't worth the vinyl they're pressed on. They can sound harsh, gritty, grainy, edgy, and thin. We love this music and we know there are great copies out there, so we keep picking these up. More often than not, we're left cold.

Peter Gabriel - So

Our Shootout Winner from 2010

  (Item #: gabriso_2010)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

TWO A+++ SIDES give you AMAZINGLY ANALOG SOUND for this digital recording! I don't think you could find another copy of this album that sounds this good no matter what you do! We recently finished another big shootout for So, and we can tell you that the majority of copies -- even the ones with the right stamper numbers -- tend to be fairly harsh, edgy, and altogether unpleasant. When you find a copy like this, though, it's worth all the trouble.

Peter Gabriel on Classic Records

Some People Have No Business Reviewing Records

  (Item #: gabripeter_reviewer)

This commentary was written after a review I spotted online prompted me to crack open one of the Classic Records 200 gram Peter Gabriel titles and play it. Let’s just say the results were less than pleasing to the ear. Bernie Grundman had worked his "magic" again and as usual I was at a loss to understand how anyone could find his mastering in any way an improvement over the plain old pressings.

Peter Gabriel

Commentary and Overview

  (Item #: allpeter_gabriel)

I’m a huge PETER GABRIEL fan, having grown up with every one of the first five studio albums practically as they were released.

The first is an operatic extravaganza, with everything-but-the-kitchen-sink production, a sound PG would never return to for some reason. Maybe he needed to get it out of his system?
