Super Hot Stamper

Nat "King" Cole
Love Is The Thing

  (Item #: cole_lovei_1808_1)

Our Price: $199.99

  • A lovely early '60s pressing of this audiophile favorite, with Double Plus (A++) sound or BETTER on both sides to rival the best pop vocal recordings we know of
  • Nat himself sounds especially immediate and real, and the strings are much less of a problem here than they are on most pressings
  • Allmusic raves: "Nat King Cole's collaborations with Gordon Jenkins rank among the finest from either artist or arranger. 1957's Love Is the Thing remains the epitome of the pair's undeniable compatibility, and it topped the album charts for eight weeks."

Nat "King" Cole - Love Is The Thing

The Breatkthrough We Were Waiting For

  (Item #: cole_lovei_2016)

Another in our series of Home Audio Exercises with advice on what you should be listening for when critically evaluating your copy (or ours) of the album.

Love Is The Thing has long been one of the best sounding Nat "King" Cole recordings we had auditioned over the years. With a large variety of copies to play, including some interesting "finds" among them, we now know it actually is The Best. We have never heard the man sound better than he does on the hottest copies of this very album.

Nat King Cole - Just One Of Those Things

Our Shootout Winner from 2008

  (Item #: cole_justo_2008)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

ONE OF THE MOST TUBEY MAGICAL MALE VOCAL RECORDS WE’VE EVER HAD THE PLEASURE OF PLAYING! We shot this out against similar copies, earlier pressings, and a 180g reissue, and nothing was quite in a league with this. Turn up the volume, turn down the lights, and let Nat serenade you from right between your speakers -- he'll be IN THE ROOM with you!

Nat King Cole - Just One Of Those Things

S&P (DCC) Debunked

  (Item #: cole_justo_reviewed)

Sonic Grade: C+

S+P's 180g reissue has some nice qualities, but it isn't especially natural, nor is it Tubey Magical the way the real Capitol pressings are. Ambience and instrumental textures are sorely lacking, although to be honest, considering how bad most Capitol pressings are, it's still a step up from the average copy sitting in your local store's used record bins.

Nat King Cole - Let's Face The Music

Reviewed in 2013

  (Item #: cole_letsf_2013)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

Rich and tubey vocals on exceptionally quiet vinyl. Swingin' Billy May Big Band arrangements. Nat plays the Hammond organ on no less than five tracks.

All the copies we played were stereo. We've had very poor luck with mono Nat King Cole records (for albums that were recorded in stereo) and tend to avoid them.

Nat King Cole - My Fair Lady

Our Shootout Winner from 2017

  (Item #: cole_myfai_2017)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

We're always on the lookout for Nat King Cole records with good sound. In our experience finding them is not nearly as easy as one might think. Far too many of his recordings are drenched in bad reverb, with sound that simply can't be taken seriously -- fine for old consoles but not so good on modern audiophile equipment.

At least one we know of has his voice out of phase with the orchestra on most copies, which put a quick end to any hope of finishing the shootout we had started.

Nat King Cole - Nat King Cole Sings/ George Shearing Plays

Our Shootout Winner from 2013

  (Item #: cole_nat_king_cole_sings_2013)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

Excellent sound on both sides! We picked up a bunch of pressings of this great collaboration album featuring the vocals of Nat King Cole and the piano work of George Shearing. The better pressings like this one are wonderful sonically, putting Cole's voice right up front with lots of breath and texture. It's very tough to find great sound for Nat King Cole, so here's a rare chance to hear what he can sound like on a strong pressing.

Nat King Cole - Sings Hymns and Spirituals

Our Shootout Winner from 2016

  (Item #: cole_sings_2016)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

The sound is big, open, rich and full. The highs are extended and silky sweet. The bass is tight and punchy. And this copy gives you more life and energy than most, by a long shot. Very few records out there give you the kind of realistic, lifelike sound you get from this pressing, particularly on side one.

Our Shootout Winner from 2016

  (Item #: cole_veryt_2016)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

The presence and immediacy here of Nat King Cole's vocals are '50s Capitol Recording Magic at its best. Set the volume right and Nat is right between your speakers, putting on the performance of a lifetime. The selection of material and the contributions of all involved are hard to fault.

Nat King Cole - Unforgettable

Our Shootout Winner from 2017

  (Item #: cole_unfor_2017)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

Our shootout winner here had the clearest, most natural vocals, with a living, breathing Nat King Cole front and center. Hard to believe some of these songs date back to 1946, with the most recent being from 1954. No matter; whatever the limitations of the recording technology, they knew enough of what they were doing to get Nat's voice consistently right for practically every track.

Nat King Cole - Welcome To The Club

Our Shootout Winner from 2017

  (Item #: cole_welco_2005)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

Capitol Records Original Multi-Color Label LP in excellent condition. The reason this Nat King Cole record is so good is simple -- he’s joined here by top jazz players from the big bands of the day. They make these sessions swing.
