Gordon Jenkins

One of Our Favorite Arrangers

  (Item #: allgordon_jenkins)

GORDON JENKINS is one of the All Time Greats.

He's the man behind the scenes for Nilsson's Must Own classic, A Little Touch Of Schmillson in The Night, a Desert Island Disc for yours truly. His work for Nat King Cole is beyond fault.

Nat King Cole
Just One of Those Things

  (Item #: cole_justo_1901_1)

Our Price: $249.99

  • This outstanding vintage Stereo Capitol pressing earned solid Double Plus (A++) grades for sound on both sides
  • This is the sound we love at Better Records -- both sides are full-bodied and Tubey Magical, with especially smooth, present vocals
  • "Cole gives an assured, unhurried performance. And that's the point: that Cole has tamed the rambunctious May does not mean he doesn't give wonderful interpretations to some wonderful songs: 'Don't Get Around Much Anymore,' 'Just One of Those Things,' 'The Song Is Ended (But the Melody Lingers On).' And the light-handed swing supports those efforts well." - All Music

Nat King Cole - Just One Of Those Things

Our Shootout Winner from 2008

  (Item #: cole_justo_2008)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

ONE OF THE MOST TUBEY MAGICAL MALE VOCAL RECORDS WE’VE EVER HAD THE PLEASURE OF PLAYING! We shot this out against similar copies, earlier pressings, and a 180g reissue, and nothing was quite in a league with this. Turn up the volume, turn down the lights, and let Nat serenade you from right between your speakers -- he'll be IN THE ROOM with you!

Nat King Cole - Just One Of Those Things

S&P (DCC) Reviewed

  (Item #: cole_justo_reviewed)

Sonic Grade: C+

S+P's 180g reissue has some nice qualities, but it isn't especially natural, nor is it Tubey Magical the way the real Capitol pressings are. Ambience and instrumental textures are sorely lacking, although to be honest, considering how bad most Capitol pressings are, it's still a step up from the average copy sitting in your local store's used record bins.

Nat King Cole - Let's Face The Music

Reviewed in 2013

  (Item #: cole_letsf_2013)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

Rich and tubey vocals on exceptionally quiet vinyl. Swingin' Billy May Big Band arrangements. Nat plays the Hammond organ on no less than five tracks.

All the copies we played were stereo. We've had very poor luck with mono Nat King Cole records (for albums that were recorded in stereo) and tend to avoid them.

The Breatkthrough We Were Waiting For

  (Item #: cole_lovei_2016)

Another in our series of Home Audio Exercises with advice on what you should be listening for when critically evaluating your copy (or ours) of the album.

Love Is The Thing has long been one of the best sounding Nat "King" Cole recordings we had auditioned over the years. With a large variety of copies to play, including some interesting "finds" among them, we now know it actually is The Best. We have never heard the man sound better than he does on the hottest copies of this very album.

  • Two masters came together to create wonderful performances of timeless standards, still appreciated by both music lovers and audiophiles to this day
  • It's tough to find top quality sound for Nat King Cole - here's your chance to hear just how good he could be on an All Tube Recording from the early '60s
  • "Cole is in prime form on such songs as "September Song," "Pick Yourself Up," and "Serenata." Shearing's accompaniment is tasteful and lightly swinging, and the string arrangements help to accentuate the romantic moods."

Nat King Cole - Nat King Cole Sings/ George Shearing Plays

Our Shootout Winner from 2013

  (Item #: cole_nat_king_cole_sings_2013)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

Excellent sound on both sides! We picked up a bunch of pressings of this great collaboration album featuring the vocals of Nat King Cole and the piano work of George Shearing. The better pressings like this one are wonderful sonically, putting Cole's voice right up front with lots of breath and texture. It's very tough to find great sound for Nat King Cole, so here's a rare chance to hear what he can sound like on a strong pressing.

Nat King Cole - Sings Hymns and Spirituals

Our Shootout Winner from 2016

  (Item #: cole_sings_2016)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

The sound is big, open, rich and full. The highs are extended and silky sweet. The bass is tight and punchy. And this copy gives you more life and energy than most, by a long shot. Very few records out there give you the kind of realistic, lifelike sound you get from this pressing, particularly on side one.

Nat King Cole - Unforgettable

Our Shootout Winner from 2017

  (Item #: cole_unfor_2017)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

Our shootout winner here had the clearest, most natural vocals, with a living, breathing Nat King Cole front and center. Hard to believe some of these songs date back to 1946, with the most recent being from 1954. No matter; whatever the limitations of the recording technology, they knew enough of what they were doing to get Nat's voice consistently right for practically every track.

Ornette Coleman - The Music of Ornette Coleman

Our Shootout Winner from 2012

  (Item #: colemmusic_2012)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Jazz Hall of Fame.

WONDERFUL SOUND and QUIET VINYL on both sides! We played a stack of these and this was clearly one of the better copies, rating above A+ on both sides. This one has the old RCA tubey magic, that's for sure! The sound is rich, full, natural and warm throughout. I bet you don't have anything like this in your collection -- it's a very cool record!

If you're looking for something different that sounds great and have a taste for adventurous music, give this one a try. We certainly enjoyed it.

Doris Day - Hooray For Hollywood

Our Shootout Winner from 2011

  (Item #: day__hoora_2011)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

This fairly rare, fairly clean Six Eye Columbia original Stereo pressing has TWO SUPERB sounding sides, each earning our Super Hot stamper sonic grade. Frank DeVol did the orchestral arrangements, and it sounds like he let Miss Day have some of the same ones he'd done for Sinatra. Don't mess with success, right?

The vintage Columbia sound is overflowing with Tubey Magic -- it's about as Big and Rich as it gets! If you don't mind some heavy-handed reverb, the kind found on practically every vintage Tony Bennett and Nat King Cole record ever made, you will find much to like here.

Sinatra set very high standards for his repertoire, his musicians, his arrangements and most of all, his performances. I find no evidence to support the contention that any of the above are lackluster or second-rate on My Kind of Broadway.
