White Hot Stamper

Milt Jackson & Ray Charles
Soul Brothers

  (Item #: jackssoulb_1808_1811)

Our Price: $349.99

  • A KILLER sounding Atlantic stereo copy with shootout winning Triple Plus (A+++) sound from start to finish
  • As Good As It Gets -- incredibly rich, full and Tubey Magical with lots of energy and a nice extended top end
  • "This one is a real historical curiosity. Not only does vibraphonist Milt Jackson double here on piano but he plays guitar (for the only time on record) during "Bags' Guitar Blues." In addition Ray Charles is heard in a purely instrumental role on piano and, during two songs, on alto sax. Charles's fine playing makes one wonder why he so rarely picked up the horn in later years." - All Music

White Hot Stamper

Milt Jackson Quintet
That's The Way It Is

  (Item #: jacksthats_1809)

Our Price: $299.99

  • Triple Plus (A+++) on both sides, this is a killer live jazz album from Impulse recorded at Shelly's Manne-Hole
  • The stereo sound is HUGE, rich and real, with relaxed, Tubey Magical qualities that few live albums are capable of
  • Wally Heider engineered and he knocked it out of the park - You Are There, and even better, it's 1969
  • "This is not experimental jazz. It's beyond that, or as they say in New York, outside that. This is solid, rooted, sweet-smelling earth of an enduring style, as played by masters."

Milt Jackson & Wes Montgomery - Bags Meets Wes!

Our Shootout Winner from 2005

  (Item #: jacksbagsm_2005)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Jazz Hall of Fame.

These two guys were made for each other; they have the same musical sensibilities. Credit must also go to Wynton Kelly; his every solo is a thing of beauty. The three principles here are at the tops of their games and the sound will have you drooling. Good luck finding a more involving and enjoyable jazz record with this kind of sound -- they just aren't out there. That's why, even with some surface problems, we think you are getting your money's worth and more with this one.

Ray Brown / Milt Jackson - Ray Brown / Milt Jackson

Reviewed in 2010

  (Item #: brownraybr_2010)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Jazz Hall of Fame.

This Minty Verve LP with the old style paste-on back cover sounds great! Big sounding ’60s jazz with lively arrangements from Oliver Nelson and Jimmy Heath. Clark Terry’s trumpet and flugelhorn contributions play a major role in the festivities. This is cool, swinging '60's jazz at its best!

A lot of Verve records from this era are poorly mastered, but this one sounds just right to us.

The Recordings of Milt Jackson

These Are Some that Didn't Make the Grade

  (Item #: jackson_milt)

These are just some of the recordings by Milt Jackson that we've auditioned recently and found wanting. Without going into specifics we'll just say these albums suffer from poor performances, poor sound, or both, and therefore do not deserve a place in your collection, and may even belong in our Hall of Shame.
