Cannonball Adderley - Somethin’ Else

Classic Records Reviewed

  (Item #: addersomet_classic)

Sonic Grade: C

Another Classic Records LP reviewed.

There are certainly some incredible sounding original pressings of this album out there, but who has the resources it takes to find one? Most of the original Blue Notes we come across these days turn out to have mediocre sound, and many of them have severely damaged inner grooves. Even the mintiest looking copies often turn out to be too noisy for most audiophiles, Blue Note vinyl being what it is.

Cannonball Adderley - Somethin’ Else

Our Shootout Winner from 2013

  (Item #: addersomet_2013)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Jazz Hall of Fame.

A+++ SOUND, giving you a KILLER copy of one of the most beloved Blue Note albums ever! The music here is stunning -- as I'm sure most of you know, this is as much a showcase for Miles Davis as it is for Cannonball himself -- but the good news for audiophiles is that it's also one of the BEST SOUNDING BLUE NOTE ALBUMS we know of! When you hear it on a copy like this, it's just about As Good As It Gets.

Rudy Van Gelder Outdoes Himself

  (Item #: addersomet_setting_the_record)

After doing this shootout, the current consensus here at Better Records is that this album deserves to hold three -- count 'em, three -- somewhat related titles:

One, The Best Sounding Blue Note record we have ever played.

Two, The Best Sounding Jazz Record we have ever played.

Three, Rudy Van Gelder's Best Engineering (based on the copies we played).

Michel Legrand - Legrand Jazz

Our Stereo Shootout Winner from 2017

  (Item #: legralegra_2017)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Jazz Hall of Fame.

This album is more common in mono than stereo, but we found the sound of the mono pressing we played seriously wanting. It's dramatically smaller and more squawky and crude than even the worst of the stereo pressings we played.

We had a copy we liked years ago but that was years ago. We don't have that copy anymore and we don't have a stereo that sounds the way our old one did either. Here are some other records that we don't think sound very good in MONO.

  (Item #: davisjackj_2016)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Jazz Hall of Fame.

Two White Hot Stamper sides on quiet vinyl for this 5-Star Jazz/Rock Fusion classic! If you love the crazy music that Miles was making with John McLaughlin in the early '70s, I'm sure you're already a fan of this album, but I bet you've never heard it sound like this.

Miles Davis - At Fillmore

Our Shootout Winner from 2010

  (Item #: davisatfil_2010)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Jazz Hall of Fame.

This is an Original Columbia 2 LP set on QUIET vinyl with tonally CORRECT sound. The music found here was recorded in the wake of Davis’ highly influential fusion opus Bitches Brew. Keith Jarrett is featured on organ along with a band that includes Chick Corea, Jack DeJohnette and Dave Holland. It culls tracks from a four night stay at the Fillmore East in 1970.

Miles Davis - Birth of the Cool

Our Shootout Winner from 2017

  (Item #: davisbirth_2017)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Jazz Hall of Fame.

Birth Of The Cool in White Hot Stamper form! We've been trying to find copies of this classic music from 1949-1950 that really delivered in an audiophile sense, but as you might imagine it was one tough task. We checked out Mono and Stereo copies, Originals and Reissues... basically anything we could get our hands on. It wasn't easy and it wasn't cheap, but we managed to find a pressing here that delivers excellent sound throughout.

Miles Davis - Bitches Brew

  (Item #: davisbitch_2009)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Jazz Hall of Fame.

STUNNING MASTER TAPE A+++ SOUND ON SIDES ONE AND FOUR. We had no idea this music could sound anywhere near this good; every Hot Stamper shootout we had tried before this week was a complete bust. It’s not an easy album to find in clean condition, let alone a copy that sounds like this and plays quietly throughout! If jazz-fusion is your bag, sides one and four of this copy will take you on a trip like few other records could. You can hear right in to the soundfield, and you can be sure that there’s a whole lot going on in there.

Miles Davis - E.S.P.

Our Shootout Winner from 2011

  (Item #: davisesp_2011)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Jazz Hall of Fame.

This relatively quiet Columbia 360 Label Stereo pressing is one of the few good copies of this album we've ever heard, and we've played a ton of 'em! Like many of you seem to be, we're big Miles Davis fans around here. We've been trying our darnedest to find Hot copies of this album, but most of them are too dull, lifeless, and congested to get excited about. This copy is a different story -- richer, fuller and more open than nearly all of the copies to hit our table.

Miles Davis - Filles de Kilimanjaro

Our Shootout Winner from 2010

  (Item #: davisfille_2010)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Jazz Hall of Fame.

SURPRISINGLY GOOD SOUND on this '70s Red Label pressing! This one even knocked out a handful of 360 Label Originals in a recent shootout. It's richer and fuller with superior clarity compared to most of the copies we've heard. The overall sound on both sides is airy, open and spacious with excellent clarity. Most of the Red Label pressings we played were too dry and sterile to enjoy, but this one has some serious analog magic.

Miles Davis - In A Silent Way

Our Shootout Winner from 2016

  (Item #: davisinasi_2016)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Jazz Hall of Fame.

Sit down with this record, draw the blinds, and you’ll hear why AMG gave it 5 Stars. Perhaps it’s the extended solos from John McLaughlin, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock Wayne Shorter, and Davis himself. Perhaps it’s the slippery, spiraling nature of these signature jazz fusion epic pieces. Perhaps it’s the grooves that Tony Williams and Dave Holland spin, slowly at first, building later in each of the LP’s mesmerizing tracks.

Our Shootout Winner from 2015

  (Item #: davisinper_2015)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Jazz Hall of Fame.

Normally our notes for the sound of the records we are shooting out against each other fall into two categories: what the record is doing right and what the record is doing wrong. You'll note that in this case there was nothing wrong about the sound to write about.

The secret is TUBES - they work their magic on this music like nothing else can.

Call me crazy, but I DON’T THINK YOU CAN CUT A BETTER SOUNDING KIND OF BLUE THAN THIS ONE!

White Hot on the '70s Red Label? Can You Really Be Serious?

  (Item #: daviskindo_wtlf)

When it comes to Miles Davis' jazz classic Kind of Blue, the 6-eye originals are of course the best sounding, right?

Nope. It’s just another Record Myth. Based on scores of pressings it has been our experience that the best sound for this album is found on standard domestic Red Label pressings from the '70s. I'm fully aware of how outrageous a statement that may seem to those who believe that original pressings are always superior, but we've long known of top of the heap, can't be beat Kind Of Blue reissues, going on more than twenty years now.

WAY off the charts. Demo Disc Quality Sound of the Highest Order on the best tracks. The extension high and low sets these sides apart. The presence of the instruments and the space around them just cannot be beaten.

WONDERFUL SOUND on both sides of this Columbia 360 Label pressing! We just finished a big shootout for this wonderful Miles Davis album and this copy was dramatically better sounding than most. Both sides have excellent bass, correct sounding brass, wonderful transparency and loads of tubey magic. The music is wonderful, Miles with his classic '60s quintet (Hancock, Shorter, Carter, Williams) with the addition of George Benson on one song.

Miles is backed by his classic '60s crew -- Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Ron Carter & Tony Williams.

Our Shootout Winner from 2013

  (Item #: davisnefer_2013)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Jazz Hall of Fame.

This Columbia 360 Label pressing has excellent sound on both sides and unusually quiet vinyl throughout. The music is wonderful too -- Miles and his late '60s quintet featuring Ron Carter, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter and Tony Williams are all in top form here, slowly working their way towards the electric fusion sounds that would be coming shortly. Many copies lack the kind of transparency and clarity you need to make sense of what each player is doing, but this Super Hot pressing gives you those qualities on both sides.

When you get a Hot Stamper like this one the sound is truly MAGICAL. (AMG has that dead right in their review.) Tons of ambience, tubey magic all over the place; let's face it, this is one of those famous Columbia recordings that shows just how good the Columbia engineers were back then. The sound is lively but never strained. Davis's horn has breath and bite just like the real thing. What more can you ask for?

Our Outstanding Reissue from 2014

  (Item #: davissomed_2014)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Jazz Hall of Fame.

The first Hot copy of this classic to hit the site in over five years! Side one rates A++ to A+++ -- super open and transparent with amazing immediacy.

This Red Label reissue DESTROYED the similar copies we played it against, and was also surprisingly competitive with our Super Hot (and Super Noisy) Six Eye ref copy. Most of these later pressings have superior clarity (compared to the earlier ones) but lack nearly all of the tubey magic. This one’s amazingly clean and clear, but still delivers on the tubey qualities -- it’s richer, warmer, and sweeter than any other Red Label pressing we played.

STUNNING, TOP QUALITY SOUND on this A+++ side two! We played a bunch of these recently and didn't hear any other side twos quite like this one! It's got more energy, more presence, and more body than we heard anywhere else. Drop the needle anywhere and listen to how open, transparent and spacious it is. The soundfield is HUGE -- bigger, wider, and deeper than on any other copy we played. Everything sounds natural, balanced and correct. This Columbia 360 LP has EXCEPTIONALLY GOOD LIVE JAZZ SOUND, but only on the Monk side. It sounds, to my mind, probably as good as this record can sound. It's very rich and full-bodied with a very strong bottom end. The energy and presence are WONDERFUL! Monk's piano has real weight and the brass sounds just right. We played this against a few other copies and none of them came close. We give side two an A++ -- I don't think you can find one that sounds any better.

To the Jazz Fans of the World, we here present one of the BEST sounding jazz recordings we have ever had the PRIVILEGE to place on a turntable. I cannot ever recall hearing a better sounding Rudy Van Gelder recording, and I have a theory as to why this tape is as good as it is: it's MONO. Japanese 2 LP Box

  (Item #: variothisi_jpn)

This IMMACULATE Sony CBS Japanese Import 2 LP Box Set with Virtually No Sign of Play (VNSOP) has SHOCKINGLY GOOD sound! It's the rare Japanese pressing that has any merit in our experience. Let's be honest: most of them are just plain awful, having been poorly mastered from sub-generation tapes. (In this respect they seem to have a lot in common with the Heavy Vinyl reissues being produced today, wouldn't you say?)

So you can imagine our surprise when every track we played sounded good -- some very good indeed -- with practically all of it classic jazz of the highest quality. With jazz greats such as Davis, Monk, Brubeck, Farmer, Blakey and Horace Silver, this set comes highly recommended to one and all.
