Sorcerer

  (Item #: davissorce_2002_4ex)

Our Price: $149.99

  • With two amazingly good sides earning Shootout Winning Triple Plus (A+++) grades, this original White Arrows 360 stereo pressing was the best copy we've heard in a very long time
  • Sorcerer demonstrates the big-as-life, spacious and unerringly accurate 30th Street Studio Sound Fred Plaut was justly famous for
  • 4 1/2 stars: "The emphasis is as much on complex, interweaving chords and a coolly relaxed sound as it is on sheer improvisation, though each member tears off thoroughly compelling solos. Still, the individual flights aren't placed at the forefront the way they were on the two predecessors -- it all merges together, pointing toward the dense soundscapes of Miles' later '60s work."

Cannonball Adderley - Somethin’ Else

Classic Records Reviewed

  (Item #: addersomet_classic)

Sonic Grade: B?

Another Classic Records LP reviewed.

There are certainly some incredible sounding pressings of this album out there, but who has the resources it takes to find one? Most of the Blue Notes we come across these days turn out to have mediocre sound, and many of them have severely damaged inner grooves. Even the mintiest looking copies often turn out to be too noisy for most audiophiles, Blue Note vinyl being what it is.

A+++ SOUND, giving you a KILLER copy of one of the most beloved Blue Note albums ever! The music here is stunning -- as I'm sure most of you know, this is as much a showcase for Miles Davis as it is for Cannonball himself -- but the good news for audiophiles is that it's also one of the BEST SOUNDING BLUE NOTE ALBUMS we know of! When you hear it on a copy like this, it's just about As Good As It Gets.

One, The Best Sounding Blue Note record we have ever played.

Two, The Best Sounding Jazz Record we have ever played.

Three, Rudy Van Gelder's Best Engineering (based on the copies we played).

Michel Legrand - Legrand Jazz

Our Stereo Shootout Winner from 2017

  (Item #: legralegra_2017)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Jazz Hall of Fame.

This album is more common in mono than stereo, but we found the sound of the mono pressing we played seriously wanting. It's dramatically smaller and more squawky and crude than even the worst of the stereo pressings we played.

We had a copy we liked years ago but that was years ago. We don't have that copy anymore and we don't have a stereo that sounds the way our old one did either. Here are some other records that we don't think sound very good in MONO.

This copy was clearer, bigger and just more REAL sounding than any other we played - you are there! STUNNING MASTER TAPE A+++ SOUND ON SIDES ONE AND FOUR. We had no idea this music could sound anywhere near this good; every Hot Stamper shootout we had tried before this week was a complete bust. It’s not an easy album to find in clean condition, let alone a copy that sounds like this and plays quietly throughout! This relatively quiet Columbia 360 Label Stereo pressing is one of the few good copies of this album we've ever heard, and we've played a ton of 'em! Like many of you seem to be, we're big Miles Davis fans around here. We've been trying our darnedest to find Hot copies of this album, but most of them are too dull, lifeless, and congested to get excited about. This copy is a different story -- richer, fuller and more open than nearly all of the copies to hit our table.

This is one of the all-time classic progressive jazz albums, and a copy like this allows you to appreciate the contributions of Miles and his top-notch band (Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Tony Williams and the great Ron Carter on most of the songs). Sit down with this record, draw the blinds, and you’ll hear why AMG gave it 5 Stars. Perhaps it’s the extended solos from John McLaughlin, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock Wayne Shorter, and Davis himself. Perhaps it’s the slippery, spiraling nature of these signature jazz fusion epic pieces. Perhaps it’s the grooves that Tony Williams and Dave Holland spin, slowly at first, building later in each of the LP’s mesmerizing tracks.

White Hot on the '70s Red Label? Can You Really Be Serious?

When it comes to Miles Davis' jazz classic Kind of Blue, the 6-eye originals are of course the best sounding, right?

Nope. It’s just another Record Myth. Based on scores of pressings it has been our experience that the best sound for this album is found on standard domestic Red Label pressings from the '70s. I'm fully aware of how outrageous a statement that may seem to those who believe that original pressings are always superior, but we've long known of top of the heap, can't be beat Kind Of Blue reissues, going on more than twenty years now.

The music is wonderful too -- Miles and his late '60s quintet featuring Ron Carter, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter and Tony Williams are all in top form here, slowly working their way towards the electric fusion sounds that would be coming shortly. Many copies lack the kind of transparency and clarity you need to make sense of what each player is doing, but this Super Hot pressing gives you those qualities on both sides.

WOW! This Original Six Eye Stereo pressing does EVERYTHING we ever hoped for from this great album! We've been searching for a killer copy of this one forever but without much luck. Here's the first one to ever hit the site, and it is a MONSTER. Both sides have KILLER A+++ sound -- super tubey magical and tonally balanced with real depth to the soundfield.

Miles Davis - Quiet Nights

Our Shootout Winner from 2016

  (Item #: davisquiet_2016)

A Miles Davis - Gil Evans classic, and only the second to hit the site in five years. Fred Plaut engineered the sessions, which here sound rich, warm, and smooth, with excellent presence. Gil Evans conducts the orchestra, adding a lovely feel reminiscent of Sketches Of Spain.

Miles Davis - Seven Steps to Heaven

Our Shootout Winner from 2006

  (Item #: davisseven_2006)

This Original Miles Davis record has DEMO DISC QUALITY SOUND! I have never heard Miles Davis’ trumpet sound more real. The sound is as good as it gets. Columbia jazz records from this period are some of the best sounding jazz records ever made, and this is a perfect example of what is right with their recordings. The sound is rich, full, sweet, tonally right on the money, and lively as can be.

Miles Davis - Sketches of Spain

Our Shootout Winner in 2016

  (Item #: davissketc_2016)

The first White Hot copy to hit the site in nearly EIGHT years! Both sides were stunning, knocking us out and earning our top Triple Plus (A+++) grade.

When you get a Hot Stamper like this one the sound is truly MAGICAL. (AMG has that dead right in their review.) Tons of ambience, tubey magic all over the place; let's face it, this is one of those famous Columbia recordings that shows just how good the Columbia engineers were back then. The sound is lively but never strained. Davis's horn has breath and bite just like the real thing. What more can you ask for?

Miles Davis - Sketches of Spain

Mono Shootout Winner in 2008

  (Item #: davissketc_2008)

This Mono Six Eye Columbia original pressing is the WINNER and [not-at-all] CURRENT CHAMPION of our Sketches of Spain shootouts. This record always sounded so thin and aggressive, with Miles’ horn always somewhat pinched and sour, but now it sounds wonderful. Who knew this record could sound so good?

Harry Pearson put this record on his TAS List of Super Discs.

Miles Davis - Someday My Prince Will Come

Our Outstanding Reissue from 2014

  (Item #: davissomed_2014)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Jazz Hall of Fame.

The first Hot copy of this classic to hit the site in over five years! Side one rates A++ to A+++ -- super open and transparent with amazing immediacy.

This Red Label reissue DESTROYED the similar copies we played it against, and was also surprisingly competitive with our Super Hot (and Super Noisy) Six Eye ref copy. Most of these later pressings have superior clarity (compared to the earlier ones) but lack nearly all of the tubey magic. This one’s amazingly clean and clear, but still delivers on the tubey qualities -- it’s richer, warmer, and sweeter than any other Red Label pressing we played.

Miles Davis - Someday My Prince Will Come

Our Six-Eye Shootout Winner from 2019

  (Item #: davissomed_2019)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Jazz Hall of Fame.

We've found Red Label copies in the past that sound pretty darn good but this Six-Eye was a HUGE step up in class over the reissues this time around. It was not even close. This one is doing it all, with in-the-room presence, massive amounts of energy, clear, note-like bass and a rich, breathy quality to Miles's horn that is simply not to be found on most pressings, be they originals, reissues, on Heavy Vinyl, at 45 RPM or what have you.

Miles Davis - Sorcerer

Our Shootout Winner from 2010

  (Item #: davissorce_2010)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Jazz Hall of Fame.

STUNNING, TOP QUALITY SOUND on this A+++ side two! We played a bunch of these recently and didn't hear any other side twos quite like this one! It's got more energy, more presence, and more body than we heard anywhere else. Drop the needle anywhere and listen to how open, transparent and spacious it is. The soundfield is HUGE -- bigger, wider, and deeper than on any other copy we played. Everything sounds natural, balanced and correct. The bass has texture, the piano has weight, the brass has the right amount of bite and so on.

WOW -- this Prestige Yellow Label Mono pressing has some of the most realistic, natural Miles Davis sound we've ever heard! Both sides earned A+++ grades and play Mint Minus Minus or a little better, truly exceptional for a vintage pressing such as this one. You will have an incredibly difficult time finding a copy that can hold its own with this one.

Miles Davis - Thelonious Monk - Miles & Monk at Newport

Our Shootout Winner from 2012

  (Item #: davismiles_and_monk_2012)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Jazz Hall of Fame.

This Columbia 360 LP has EXCEPTIONALLY GOOD LIVE JAZZ SOUND, but only on the Monk side. It sounds, to my mind, probably as good as this record can sound. It's very rich and full-bodied with a very strong bottom end. The energy and presence are WONDERFUL! Monk's piano has real weight and the brass sounds just right. We played this against a few other copies and none of them came close. We give side two an A++ -- I don't think you can find one that sounds any better.

Miles Davis - Workin’ And Steamin’

Our Shootout Winning Mono from 2010

  (Item #: davisworki_2010)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Jazz Hall of Fame.

To the Jazz Fans of the World, we here present one of the BEST sounding jazz recordings we have ever had the PRIVILEGE to place on a turntable. I cannot ever recall hearing a better sounding Rudy Van Gelder recording, and I have a theory as to why this tape is as good as it is: it's MONO. It also sounds like it's recorded completely LIVE in the studio, direct to one track you might say. As good a recording as Kind of Blue is, I think the best parts of this album are more immediate and more real than anything on KOB.

Our Shootout Winning Mono from 2018

  (Item #: davisworki_2018)

A MONSTER Double Album that simply could not be beat - three of the four sides earned our highest sonic grade of Triple Plus (A+++). The best sounding tracks here can hold their own with ANY Miles Davis vinyl we've ever heard, and that's a whole lot of Mile Davis albums. You might be surprised that a reissue can beat the originals, but one play of this pressing should be enough to remove all doubt.

Various Artists - This is Modern Jazz Vol. 2

Japanese 2 LP Box

  (Item #: variothisi_jpn)

This IMMACULATE Sony CBS Japanese Import 2 LP Box Set with Virtually No Sign of Play (VNSOP) has SHOCKINGLY GOOD sound! It's the rare Japanese pressing that has any merit in our experience. Let's be honest: most of them are just plain awful, having been poorly mastered from sub-generation tapes. (In this respect they seem to have a lot in common with the Heavy Vinyl reissues being produced today, wouldn't you say?)

So you can imagine our surprise when every track we played sounded good -- some very good indeed -- with practically all of it classic jazz of the highest quality. With jazz greats such as Davis, Monk, Brubeck, Farmer, Blakey and Horace Silver, this set comes highly recommended to one and all.
