America - History: America’s Greatest Hits

Our Shootout Winner from 2008

  (Item #: amerihisto_2008)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

THE BIG SOUND on both sides lets this Greatest Hits compilation hold its own against the originals. Side One has amazing CLARITY and PRESENCE, which is especially noticeable on the vocals. Side Two has plenty of bottom end that drives these songs with energy and life. Listen for the bells on 'Tin Man'; they have the correct transients and harmonics. You never quite get back all of the tubey magic of the originals, but the detail and richness are enough to make you fall in love with this high quality George Martin (re) production.

America - Homecoming

Our Shootout Winner from 2009

  (Item #: amerihomec_2009)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

This Warner Bros. Green Label Pressing is THE NEW HOMECOMING KING! The tubey analog magic of this recording is ABSOLUTELY OFF THE CHARTS. The mindblowing presence and immediacy of this copy will put the lovely voices and sweetly strummed guitars of this band right in front of you. They don't make records that sound like this anymore.

Joe Walsh - The Smoker You Drink, The Player You Get

Our Shootout Winner from 2010

  (Item #: walshsmoke_2010)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

MASTER TAPE SOUND on side one of 1973 classic, an album the All Music Guide calls "a superb album by anyone's standards". We had no idea this album could sound so good until we stumbled upon a clean copy recently a threw it on the table. We couldn't believe how rich and punchy it sounded, after hearing dozens of dry, thin, lifeless copies over the years.

Journey - Escape

Our Shootout Winner from 2013

  (Item #: journescap_2013)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

A White Hot shootout winning Ultimate Side Two, on quiet vinyl no less. Side one is Super Hot, big and lively. The chorus really ROCKS on Don't Stop Believin'. The Number One album that single-handedly catapulted them into the Big Time. Stone in Love, Who's Crying Now and Open Arms all sound amazing.

Lou Reed - Transformer

Our Shootout Winner from 2017

  (Item #: reed_trans_2017)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

Transformer is an absolute tour de force of '70s Glam Rock / Classic Rock / Alternative Rock. You've got Lou Reed teamed up with David Bowie (in the producer's chair!), Mick Ronson, Herbie Flowers and Klaus Voorman, and on top of that the album was recorded at Trident and mixed by the great Ken Scott.

Queen - A Day At the Races

Our Shootout Winner from 2015

  (Item #: queendayat_2015)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

TWO SUPERB A+++ SIDES! Big and lively, rich and full, clear and open, no other copy in our shootout impressed us as much as this one.

Most of the copies we played weren't even worth putting a grade on. We would feel horrible selling a record that we knew sounded as bad as those dogs. It may never be a Demo Disc, but on a White Hot Stamper copy like this it's a whole lot of fun!

Queen - A Night at the Opera

DCC Debunked

  (Item #: queennight_debunk)

Sonic Grade: F

A Hall of Shame pressing and another DCC LP debunked.

Murky, opaque and compressed: yes, we can agree it has never been an especially good sounding record on anything but the most difficult to find UK pressings, but does it deserve this kind of mastering disrespect? Isn't the idea to try and FIX what is wrong, rather than to make it worse? At collector prices no less. Don't waste your money.

Queen - News Of The World

Stomping and Clapping with the Fans

  (Item #: queennewso_wtlf)

Another in our series of Home Audio Exercises with specific advice on What to Listen For (WTLF) as you critically evaluate your copy of NOTW.

Side one starts out with Queen's back-to-back anthemic classics, "We Will Rock You" and "We Are the Champions". Does it get any better for a Queen fan? Hell no!

The stomps and claps that introduce the former should make you feel like you are in a stadium full of people with a single goal - to rock you. Those stomps and claps need weight and clarity, an unusual combination. One without the other is not going to cut it.
