  • Fairly quiet vinyl on both sides -- Mint Minus to Mint Minus Minus (with a light mark on side two)

Jennifer Warnes - Famous Blue Raincoat

Listening in Depth

  (Item #: warnefamou_depth)

Presenting another entry in our extensive Listening in Depth series.

I'm a huge fan of this music. It's the only album Jennifer Warnes ever made that I would consider a Must Own record or a Desert Island Disc.

In my humble opinion it's clearly her MASTERPIECE.

Jennifer Warnes - Famous Blue Raincoat

Our Shootout Winner from 2009

  (Item #: warnefamou_2009)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

This Cypress pressing has AMAZINGLY GOOD SOUND on side one! With a grade of A++ to A+++ it's the highest rated side of any copy we have to offer this go around -- none of our other pressings could touch it on any side.

Why such a high grade? Simple. It's ALIVE! It's super transparent with a big, bold bottom end. The drums here are as good as they get -- punchy and powerful with lots of WHOMP and the sound of the skins being THWACKED.

Jennifer Warnes - The Hunter

Cisco Debunked

  (Item #: warnehunte_cisco)

Sonic Grade: F

A Hall of Shame pressing from Cisco / Impex.

Some of the worst sound I have ever heard in my life. An absolute disgrace, both sonically and musically.

Jennifer Warnes - The Hunter

Import Debunked

  (Item #: warnehunte)

Sonic Grade: F

A Hall of Shame pressing on import vinyl from 1992. Years ago we wrote:

This is a SUPER RARE Private Music German Import LP. The last two copies of this record listed on eBay went for over $600!

All of which was true. We left out what an awful record The Hunter is in every way. If you like your Big Productions to sound as phony as possible, this is the album for you. Not one instrument sounds remotely like it should, and that is simply an insult to audiophiles of every stripe. The problem there is that most self-identified audiophiles failed to notice how bad the sound was.

All of which was true. We left out, however, what an awful record The Hunter is in every way. If you like your Big Production Pop to sound as phony as possible, this is the album for you. Not one instrument sounds remotely like it should, and that is surely an insult to audiophiles of every stripe. Jennifer Warnes - The Well

Cisco Debunked

  (Item #: warnewell_debunk)

Sonic Grade: F

A Hall of Shame pressing from Cisco / Impex.

Some of the worst sound I have ever heard in my life, worse than The Hunter even, and that's saying something! It is records like this that make audiophiles the laughing stocks of the music world they too often appear to be (all customers and at least some of you reading this excepted). If this kind of crap is what they choose to play they deserve all the derision being heaped upon them.

Leonard Cohen - Recent Songs

Our Shootout Winner from 2013

  (Item #: cohenrecen_2013)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

This is easily the best copy of this album to ever hit the site, with a superb A+++ side one and an excellent A++ side two! This 1979 album marks Cohen's return to the simple folk arrangements of his early albums. The songs are as stunning as ever, but only the best pressings really do them justice. As you might expect, the key elements here are going to be vocals, acoustic guitars and Cohen's trademark female backup vocalists. This one really gets them all right, with the kind of big, spacious soundstage and full, rich tonality nothing else in our shootout could compete with!
