  • 4 1/2 stars: "Even with the strings and choirs that dominate the sound of the album, John manages to rock out on a fair share of the record... Elton John remains one of his best records."

Elton John - Goodbye Yellow Brick Road

What to Listen For

  (Item #: john_goodb_choruses)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock Hall of Fame.

The richness, sweetness and freedom from artificiality is most obvious where you often hear it on a Pop Rock Big Production like GYBR: in the loudest, densest, most climactic choruses.

We set the playback volume so that the loudest parts of the record are as huge and powerful as they can possibly become without crossing the line into distortion or congestion.

Shockingly good sound, the best sound for any copy that has ever made it to the site. This Madman is guaranteed to blow your mind. It certainly blew ours.

Our Shootout Winner from 2017

  (Item #: john_donts_2017)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

The tonality here is rich, tubey and warm. It doesn't get thick or murky as many copies have a tendency to do.

The amazing engineer KEN SCOTT (Ziggy Stardust, Magical Mystery Tour, Honky Chateau, Crime of the Century, Truth, Birds of Fire) is the man responsible for the sound here.

Elton John - Greatest Hits

Reviewed in 2006

  (Item #: john_great_2006)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

This is an EXCELLENT sounding British DJM pressing of Elton’s Greatest Hits, with all the tubey magic that that implies. These are the real tapes, folks, pressed on that see-thru purple DJM vinyl.

The sound of course varies from track to track. 'Your Song' and 'Saturday Night' are GREAT here. The other tracks on side one are good but not like those two.

John Baldry - It Ain't Easy

Our Shootout Winner from 2017

  (Item #: baldritain_2017)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

A few years ago while I was working on the site I had music on youtube playing. The song "Flying" came on from the It Ain't Easy album, and when the chorus came in I could not believe how big, rich and powerful it sounded -- this, on computer speakers!

I tracked down my copy of the album, the domestic Green Label WB pressing with a different cover you no doubt have seen in your local record store bin and threw it on the table for a quick listen. In moments it was obvious that my domestic original was a big step down sonically from what I imagined the source for the youtube video sound would have been.

A side two for the ages -- it beat our best Ref Copy to earn a Four Plus (A++++) grade. Both sides are stunning with superb Demo Quality sound: huge, rich, spacious, dynamic and lively. An incredible recording and longtime member of our Top 100 -- our pick for Elton's very best music and sound.

Elton John - Tumbleweed Connection

Elton's Masterpiece

  (Item #: john_tumbl_2012)

The best copies of this album are so good they belong on the list of the Ten Best Sounding Rock Records of All Time, how about that!

This copy really delivers on the sound side — you get stunning immediacy, big-time presence, tons of depth to the soundfield, full-bodied vocals, amazing transparency, and BOATLOADS of Tubey Magic. Elton John fans, today is your lucky day. The vocals are full and present, with not a trace of the phony EQ that plagues the typical pressing. The entire mix is stunningly high-res, with no attendant sacrifice in richness or Tubey Magic.

  (Item #: john_honky_2007)

This British Import Honky Chateau is THE BEST SOUNDING COPY WE’VE EVER HEARD -- BY FAR! We just finished a big shootout for this wonderful album, and this copy took top honors with MASTER TAPE SOUND!

Elton John - Empty Sky

Our Shootout Winner from 2012

  (Item #: john_empty_2012)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

The undiscovered gem in the Elton John catalog! This original British Import demonstrates just how good a recording this is. The sound is excellent and the music is surprisingly good -- and weird in a fun way! It certainly bears little relation to the middle-of-the-road pop songs Elton's been making since the '80s. These guys were young and figuring out their sound here, and this album takes Elton to some pretty interesting places. A fun debut album that is certainly worth a listen if you're a fan of the classic albums that were soon to follow.

Elton John - Captain Fantastic & the Brown Dirt Cowboy

Our Shootout Winner from 2009

  (Item #: john_capta_2009)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

This British DJM pressing has TWO INCREDIBLE SIDES -- A++ for the first and A+++ for the second! We finally gathered up enough reasonably clean copies to get this shootout going, which was no mean feat itself. Most of the copies we played were grainy, murky, veiled or lifeless, but this one gave us a Captain Fantastic we could really get into. The sound is lively, dynamic, and tubey magical throughout. The clarity, transparency, and immediacy are all superb.

Elton John - Elton John

Our Shootout Winner from 2011

  (Item #: john_elton_2011)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

This original DJM British pressing has a SUPERB Demo Disc Quality side two and a wonderful A++ side one! You could easily play a hundred records from the '70s and not hear one that sounds this good. The richness and sweetness of this side have to be heard to be believed. We would be very surprised if this copy didn't become your favorite Elton John record -- it's an absolute knockout.

As is usually the case for this album and specifically these Brit DJM pressings, the vinyl is a bit noisy -- Mint Minus Minus with constant moderate surface noise under the music.

Elton John - Goodbye Yellow Brick Road

Our Shootout Winner from 2012

  (Item #: john_goodb_2012)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock Hall of Fame.

With three White Hot shootout winning sides and one Super Hot side, the four sides of these 2 LPs will show you a GYBR you never imagined could exist. We certainly never expected to hear it sound like this, I can tell you that. I've never begun to hear these songs have the energy, presence and rock and roll POWER that they do here.

Rockin' Like No Other

  (Item #: john_rocko_rocks)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock Hall of Fame and another in the long list of recordings that really comes alive when you Turn Up Your Volume AND a Forgotten Classic from 1975.

Rock of the Westies is a SHOCKINGLY better album than I remember it being from years back. It's a knockout, with a great bunch of Elton John / Bernie Taupin rockers that still hold up forty years later.

What To Listen For

  (Item #: john_madma_wtlf)

Another in our series of Home Audio Exercises with advice on What to Listen For (WTLF) as you critically evaluate your copy of Madman.

This is the last of the classic Elton John albums recorded at Trident, the best of which have more Tubey Magic than anything recorded afterwards. There are three amazing sounding Elton John records on our Top 100 list, two of them engineered by the estimable ROBIN GEOFFREY CABLE, Trident Studios’ house engineer in 1972.

The Earliest Stampers Sound the Best, Right?

  (Item #: john_goodb_myth)

Nope. It’s just another Record Myth.

We had a White Hot stamper listing a while back with these comments featured prominently in the description:

This is BY FAR the best sounding Goodbye Yellow Brick Road to ever hit the site, and BY FAR the best sounding copy we have ever played here at Better Records. And for those of you who think that the early stampers must be the best, note that this killer copy had no side with a stamper under three. How about them apples? As we like to say, screw all that Platonic thinking; we find the empirical approach of playing the records works a whole lot better, thank you very much.

A Heavy Vinyl Winner!

  (Item #: john_goodb_scorecard)

Sonic Grade: B (or better!)

Hey, they really did a good job with this one! We are going to listen to it again at a later date to see if our initial impressions were correct [I guess by now it should be clear that we are never going to do that, sorry!], but it sure sounded good to us when we played it recently during our big GYBR shootout.

I’m guessing no domestic copy can beat it, and certainly no audiophile half-speed mastered pressing can hold a candle to it; those records are pretty awful.

MoFi and DD Labs Debunked

  (Item #: john_goodb_debunk)

Sonic Grade: F (DD Labs) / D (MoFi)

Hall of Shame and two more Half Speeds debunked.

If you have the Direct Disc Labs half-speed you have one truly awful record in your collection, so sucked out in the midrange, so compressed everywhere, what the hell were they thinking making this rockin' album sound like that? It’s positively disgraceful. It makes MoFi look like they knew what they doing, and we know that sure isn’t true.
