Dave Brubeck - A Cut Above

Not Recommended

  (Item #: brubeacuta_ddlabs)

Sonic Grade: D

A Hall of Shame pressing.

This Direct Disk Labs Double LP is an exceptionally WELL-RECORDED Direct-to-Disc. The bass is punchy, the piano sounds tonally Right On The Money (ROTM) and the overall sound is lively and immediate. It’s one of the better sounding Direct-to-Discs we’ve played lately.

The music goes nowhere however, hence the grade.

Dave Brubeck - Bossa Nova USA

Our Shootout Winner from 2015

  (Item #: brubebossa_2015)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Jazz Hall of Fame.

Who knew? Not us and not anybody else it seems. We are not aware that any of the audiophile cognoscenti have ever taken this recording seriously, but that just goes to show how uninformed -- or perhaps more likely underinformed -- they've always been.

Gems such as this sit undiscovered even after thousands of pages of audiophile record reviews have been written. Then, along come a handful of guys in Thousand Oaks, California many years later, 52 to be exact, and reveal to the world a heretofore all but unknown yet nonetheless amazing Brubeck record.

Skip It in Mono

  (Item #: brubebossa_mono)

Stick with stereo on this title; the MONO pressings aren't worth anybody's time (scratch that: any audiophile's time). If you see one for a buck at a garage sale, pick it up for the music, and then be on the lookout for a nice stereo original to enjoy for the sound.

Dave Brubeck - Countdown - Time In Outer Space

Our Shootout Winner from 2016

  (Item #: brubecount_2016)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Jazz Hall of Fame.

Clean and Clear, Yet Rich and Sweet. This copy managed to find the perfect balance of these attributes. You want that rare copy that keeps what is good about a Tubey Magical analog recording from The Golden Age of Jazz while managing to avoid the pitfalls so common to them: smear, lack of top end extension, opacity and blubber. To be sure, the fault is not with the recording (I guess; again, not having heard the master tape) but with the typically mediocre pressing.

Dave Brubeck - Time Changes

Our Shootout Winner from 2010

  (Item #: brubetimec_2010)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Jazz Hall of Fame.

Side one is solid and warm. Note that the sax and piano are lively and present on track three, one of the better sounding tracks and one we used to test with in our shootout.

On side two of many copies the orchestra sounded dry, and sometimes aggressive when loud, but on this copy the sound stayed smooth and full. Note how breathy Desmond's sax is.

Dave Brubeck - Time Further Out

Our Stereo Shootout Winner from 2011

  (Item #: brubetimef_2011)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Jazz Hall of Fame.

This Columbia Original Six-Eye Label Stereo pressing is the new ALL TIME CHAMPION for this album, with two INCREDIBLE A+++ sides and surprisingly quiet vinyl for a record this old! We just finished a big shootout for Time Further Out and this copy was the best BY FAR. It gives you big drums, incredible spaciousness, tight bass, extended highs and wonderful clarity. I don't think you could find a better sounding copy no matter what you did!

Dave Brubeck - Time Out

Classic Records Debunked

  (Item #: brubetimeo_debunk)

Sonic Grade: D

When we did a shootout for this record way back in October of 2007 we took the opportunity to play the Classic Records 200 gram pressing. Maybe we got a bad one, who knows, but that record did not sound remotely as good as the real thing (6 eye or 360, both can be quite good). The piano sounded thin and hard, which was quite unexpected given the fact that we used to consider the Classic LP one of their few winners and actually recommended it.

Dave Brubeck Quartet - 25th Anniversary Reunion

Reviewed in 2005

  (Item #: brube25tha_2005)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Jazz Hall of Fame.

This album has SURPRISINGLY GOOD SOUND and even more SURPRISINGLY GOOD MUSIC! Who would have thought that these old goats still could still play jazz at this level? Especially Joe Morello on the drums -- this guy drums up a storm, especially during his solos on the first track. He's always been one of the strongest members of the foursome. But everybody here is good, and they do both their famous songs and some that they're less well known for.

Dave Brubeck Quartet - Near Myth

Reviewed in 2011

  (Item #: brubenearm_2011)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Jazz Hall of Fame.

This original STEREO BLUE VINYL Fantasy pressing has Hot Stamper sound on both sides, with rich and musical Tubey Magical qualities appropriate to this early '60s West Coast jazz. We've known about this album for close to twenty years, having played the surprisingly good sounding OJC pressing and recommended it back in the days when those kinds of records were still in print.

Dave Brubeck Quartet - Newport 1958

Reviewed in 2011

  (Item #: brubenewpo_2011)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Jazz Hall of Fame.

This is a very nice looking Columbia Six-Eye LP. The sound here is actually pretty good, particularly on side one. It's open and present, relaxed and natural, with some nice weight to the piano and fairly tight bass. It's not exactly a knockout, but if you're looking for a musical and enjoyable copy this one should do the trick. Side two is almost as good, and both sides have been through our extensive cleaning process.

Dave Brubeck Quartet - Time Further Out's Engineering

When Less Is More

  (Item #: brubetimef_engineering)

FRED PLAUT is one of our favorite recording and mixing engineers. His work on Time Further Out speaks for itself -- we think it's the best sounding Brubeck recording of them all.

We could find no information about the venue for this recording. It might be the Columbia Studios known as "The Church" -- that would explain the amazing sound quality of the album -- but it may just be Plaut's engineering prowess in another location that makes this some of the best sound to be found on any Brubeck record.

Our Mono Shootout Winner from 2010

  (Item #: brubetimef_2010)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Jazz Hall of Fame for this amazing MONO LP.

This Columbia Six-Eye pressing is THE BEST SOUNDING MONO COPY OF THIS ALBUM WE'VE EVER HEARD! The better Mono pressings of this album give you extra immediacy, more solidity to the drums, and energy like you wouldn't believe. That makes the drum solo on side two sound OUT OF THIS WORLD. Most copies are congested and veiled, but not this one! The sound is spacious and transparent with wonderful presence. You will not believe how lively it is!

What to Listen For

  (Item #: brubetimef_wtlf)

The best copies such as this one demonstrate the big-as-life Fred Plaut Columbia Sound at its best (better than even Time Out in our opinion). These vintage recordings are full-bodied, spacious, three-dimensional, rich, sweet and warm in the best tradition of an All Tube Analog recording. If you want to hear big drums in a big room these Brubeck recordings will show you that sound better than practically any record we know of. The Engineering tab below has much more on that subject.

Dave Brubeck Quartet - Time Out

Our Shootout Winner from 2011

STUNNING A+++ SOUND AND QUIET VINYL ON BOTH SIDES! Breathtakingly spacious and transparent, this copy has the big three-dimensional soundstage that makes this record such a joy to listen to. Dave Brubeck Quartet - Time Out

Our Shootout Winner from 2014

  (Item #: brubetimeo_2014)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Jazz Hall of Fame.

This time around no other copy of Time Out could touch our good Six Eye Stereo pressings -- they were in a league of their own.

If you've been with us for a long time you may remember that this was not always the case. We used to really like some 360s as I recall, as well as the original mono pressing. This time around, not so much.

This time around most everythings's different. Allow us to explain.

Dave Brubeck Trio Featuring Gerry Mulligan - Compadres

Our Shootout Winner from 2017

  (Item #: brubecompa_2017)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Jazz Hall of Fame.

If you haven't heard one of our killer Gerry Mulligan vintage Columbia pressings, with the fullness of its lower midrange bringing out all the magic of the man's remarkably rich baritone, this is your chance.

And if too much baritone sax is not your thing, this may be just the right record for you, with Brubeck taking half the leads.

Stick with Stereo on This One

  (Item #: brubecompa_mono)

Stick with stereo on this album. The Mono pressings -- at least the ones we've played -- aren't worth anybody's time (scratch that: any audiophile's time). The mono is dramatically smaller, more recessed and more lifeless than even the worst of the stereo pressings we played.

Here are more records we don't think sound very good in MONO.

Here are some titles that have the potential to sound amazing in MONO.

Dave Brubeck Trio w/ Gerry Mulligan - Blues Roots

Our Shootout Winner from 2016

  (Item #: brubeblues_2016)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Jazz Hall of Fame.

A very different quartet appears on this record, with Mulligan's baritone sax replacing Desmond's alto and a whole new rhythm section behind both of these veteran leaders.

We've been surprised how good these mid- to late-'60s Brubeck recordings can sound. There's still plenty of Tubey Magical richness on the best pressings of these records, a quality that is especially important when trying to reproduce the full-bodied sound of a baritone sax.

In the Market for New Speakers?

See How Well They Handle the Energy of Far More Drums

  (Item #: brubetimef_exercise)

Another in our series of Home Audio Exercises.

The drum solo Joe Morello lets loose on Far More Drums is one of the best on record. I was playing that very song recently and it occurred to me that it is practically impossible for a screen or panel speaker of any nature to reproduce the sound of those drums properly, regardless of how many subs you have.

Most of the music is not in the deeper bass anyway. It’s the whack of instruments whose energy is in the lower midrange and midrange that a screen speaker will struggle with, while a good large-driver dynamic speaker seems to handle the energy in that range with ease.

This Minty looking Columbia Six Eye Demo LP has SUPERB SOUND and some of the quietest Six Eye vinyl I’ve ever heard. Various Artists - This is Modern Jazz Vol. 2

Japanese 2 LP Box

  (Item #: variothisi_jpn)

This IMMACULATE Sony CBS Japanese Import 2 LP Box Set with Virtually No Sign of Play (VNSOP) has SHOCKINGLY GOOD sound! It's the rare Japanese pressing that has any merit in our experience. Let's be honest: most of them are just plain awful, having been poorly mastered from sub-generation tapes. (In this respect they seem to have a lot in common with the Heavy Vinyl reissues being produced today, wouldn't you say?)

So you can imagine our surprise when every track we played sounded good -- some very good indeed -- with practically all of it classic jazz of the highest quality. With jazz greats such as Davis, Monk, Brubeck, Farmer, Blakey and Horace Silver, this set comes highly recommended to one and all.
