Super Hot Stamper

Bob Dylan
Highway 61 Revisited

  (Item #: dylanhighw_1811_1)

Our Price: $249.99

  • This 360 Label stereo copy boasts outstanding Double Plus (A++) sound or BETTER from first note to last - and it's QUIET
  • Clean stereo pressings of this album are ridiculously hard to come by these days, not to mention that few copies will sound as good as this one does
  • In the same way that Sgt. Pepper changed music a mere two years later, Highway 61 Revisited left all of Dylan's contemporaries behind, scrambling to keep up with the standard it set
  • "Dylan had not only changed his sound, but his persona, trading the folk troubadour for a streetwise, cynical hipster ... it proved that rock & roll needn't be collegiate and tame in order to be literate, poetic, and complex." - 5 Stars

  (Item #: dylannewmo_1808_1811)

Our Price: $149.99

  • A superb vintage pressing with solid Double Plus (A++) sound or better throughout - on quiet vinyl to boot
  • During our recent shootout we found 1970's New Morning to be surprisingly enjoyable - it fits in nicely between Dylan's country era and his later '70s works such as Blood On The Tracks
  • He's also singing in his familiar Bob Dylan "nasally" voice, not the country croon he developed for Nashville Skyline
  • 4 1/2 stars: "... the overall quality is quite high, and many of the songs explore idiosyncratic routes Dylan had previously left untouched... Such offbeat songs make New Morning a charming, endearing record."

Our Price: $79.99

  • This is actually one of the better sounding Dylan records from the '80s - it's fairly rich and smooth
  • This copy plays on relatively quiet vinyl, Mint Minus to Mint Minus Minus throughout
  • 4 Stars: "Infidels was the first secular record Bob Dylan recorded since Street Legal, and it's far more like a classicist Dylan album than that one, filled with songs that are evocative in their imagery and direct in their approach ... its writing is closer to Dylan's peak of the mid-'70s, and some of the songs here... are minor classics, capturing him reviving his sense of social consciousness and his gift for poetic, elegant love songs."

Bob Dylan & The Band - Before The Flood

Our Shootout Winner from 2012

  (Item #: dylanbefor_2012)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

One of the great Live Classic Rock albums of all time, now available in White Hot Stamper form! We recently undertook a massive shootout for this spirited double LP and three of the better sides from the whole shebang are on this here pressing. Sides one and two each earned our top grade of A+++, while side four clocked in at A++. Side three, as is often the case, was not quite up to the same standards.

Bob Dylan - Highway 61 Revisited

Our Shootout Winner from 2012

  (Item #: dylanhighw_2012)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

This 360 Label pressing has a SUPERB A+++ SIDE ONE backed with a strong A++ side two. We had a big stack of 360s and Red Labels with good stampers to compare, and this copy had a side one that could not be beat. It's got big time immediacy, tons of energy, loads of tubey magic and exceptional clarity. The bottom end is punchy with real weight and the soundfield is open, spacious and so transparent.

Bob Dylan - Another Side of Bob Dylan

Our Shootout Winner from 2009

  (Item #: dylananoth_2009)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

We played a bunch of these recently and only a very small handful of sides had enough magic to be considered Hot Stampers. The typical pressing loses its steam in (at least) one of two ways: honky mids and veiled vocals. The copies with the honk can be nearly unlistenable when Dylan starts blowing his harmonica, and the copies with veiled vocals and no real immediacy bored us to tears.

This copy has the magic on side two. The sound is full-bodied, natural, and rich with excellent presence and real depth to the soundfield.

  (Item #: dylanblond_2011)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

AMAZING A+++ SOUND on the first three sides, giving you killer Master Tape Sound for every song except Sad Eyed Lady Of The Lowlands! We just finished a huge Blonde on Blonde shootout and this copy murdered the competition on sides one, two and three, earning our top grade for each. The sound is SUPERB -- I don't think I've ever heard this album sound any better! It's rich, full-bodied, warm, natural and has the energy of live music in a way no other copy we played could compare to. The presence and immediacy are OFF THE CHARTS.

What to Listen For

  (Item #: dylanblood_wtlf_1)

Another in our series of Home Audio Exercises with advice on what you should be listening for when critically evaluating your copy (or ours) of the album.

Many copies have no bass, while other copies are bright, a combination which ruins the sound of the acoustic guitars that dominate the album. On the better Hot Stamper pressings the bass will be deep and well-defined and the tonal balance will be correct.

The copies that fared the best in our shootouts were rich, warm, tubey and full-bodied -- in other words, analog sounding.

Our Shootout Winner from 2013 in Mono

TWO AMAZING SIDES RATING AT OR NEAR A+++ for this the MONO pressing! It's beyond difficult to find copies of this album with good sound, but we managed to get a hold of a hot one here. This is a true solo album -- guitar, vocals and harmonica -- and it's a lot of fun to hear a young (20!) Dylan playing the way he might have played in the coffee shops and folk clubs of Greenwich Village.

  (Item #: dylanbring_2011)

TWO INCREDIBLE SIDES on UNUSUALLY QUIET VINYL! This may very well be the HOTTEST copy of Bringing It All Back Home to EVER hit the site, rating A++ on side one and earning top A+++ honors on side two. We pulled together enough clean pressings recently for a big shootout and this copy was the overall winner. The sound is lively, transparent and rich on both sides with excellent immediacy throughout. You will have an incredibly hard time finding another copy of this album that sounds so good and plays this quietly!

Side one of this Columbia pressing is RIGHT ON THE MONEY! That's where the great song If Not For You is found, and on this copy it is SMOKIN'. There's tons of energy, real texture to the vocals, and more presence than we heard elsewhere. Check out that BIG bottom end! This side earned our top A+++ grade.

Side two is strong as well, earning a plus and a half -- A+ to A++, as we say. The sound is clean, clear and transparent, but not quite as lively or present. It's still better than many of the copies we played against it.

Bob Dylan - Planet Waves

Our Shootout Winner from 2009

  (Item #: dylanplane_2009)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

This White Hot Stamper copy of Planet Waves boasts not only great Bob Dylan sound, but some of the best sound for The Band that you'll ever hear! That's right, Dylan is backed by Messrs. Robertson, Danko, Helm, Manuel and Hudson on this album, and I don't know when we've ever heard such audiophile quality sound from that crew. It's a real treat to hear their signature styles without the cardboard-y, compressed quality we usually find on their albums.

Lots of great material on this album, not sure why it doesn't get more respect. On A Night Like This, Going Going Gone, Forever Young, You Angel You... these are wonderful, well-recorded songs.

Our Shootout Winner from 2017

  (Item #: dylanstree_2017)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

This copy has an insanely good Triple Plus (A+++) side one backed with an excellent Double Plus (A++) side two.

Which breaks the rules a bit because most side twos earned a sonic grade that was about a half plus higher than the average copy's grade for side one. Side two most of the time just plain sounds better than side one, so when evaluating your copy be sure to check side two first to hear what is probably going to be the best sound on the album.

Here are some other albums with notable Side to Side Differences.

This is a 2-pack of two Mono pressings, each with a killer Triple Plus (A+++) side. The White Hot sides are amazingly spacious, full-bodied, natural and clear with great presence. We greatly prefer the best Mono pressings to the best stereo copies, but they are very hard to come by.

This is our favorite of the early Dylan albums for both music and sound! We're picking up both mono and stereo copies when we see them clean (which is rare) but the best mono copies truly take this music to a whole new level.

This 360 Label Original Columbia Mono LP, complete with the rare lyric sheet, has two LOVELY sounding sides that rate A++ or better. I was actually a big fan of the Sundazed Mono, but this has more of that Tubey Magic, richness, and overall naturalness that you find on old records, qualities that seem to be sorely lacking on even the best 180 gram remasterings. MoFi also did this record and ruined it in the process (shocker!).

Presenting today’s Home Audio Exercise. Play your copy of Nashville Skyline -- on speakers, no fair cheating on headphones! -- and see if you can answer this question. At the beginning of one of the songs on this album two sounds are heard, neither of which is produced by an instrument, but could be said to have been produced by a singer. What are these two mysterious sounds?

If you have a good copy of the record, a good stereo and the ability to listen critically, you should have no problem figuring out what these sounds are. When you do, drop us an email. Until we come up with a better prize, for now we can offer you an extra 10% off your next order.

MASTER TAPE SOUND ON SIDE ONE backed with an excellent side two, both on very quiet vinyl! It took us ages to put together enough clean copies to get this shootout going again. Many of the pressings we played suffered from too much compression and a phony hi-fi quality. We knew there had to be great copies out there somewhere, so we kept dropping the needle until we found a few good men.
