Rachmaninov - Piano Concerto #2 - Katchen

Speakers Corner Reviewed

  (Item #: rachmpiano_2_speakers_corner)

Sonic Grade: Unknown

In the late '90s we described the sound of this pressing this way: "Outstanding Rachmaninoff, dark and rich. Highly recommended." Since we have not played a copy of the album in over ten years, we have taken down our previous Sonic Grade of B as we have no idea how the record would fare today on our much-improved system. For all we know it's been recut, which is another problem with our old reviews of records we used to like: the new version could have very different sound from the one we played (and that's not even taking into account the pressing variability, which is sometimes huge).

Cannonball Adderley Quintet - In Chicago

Speakers Corner (Reviewed in the '90s)

  (Item #: adderinchi_speakers_corner)

Sonic Grade: C? B?

A fairly good Speakers Corner jazz album.

Years ago we wrote the following: "This one has excellent sound (in that left-right jazz of the fifties kind of way)." We can't be sure that we would still feel the same way. My guess is that this is still probably a good record if you can get one the 30 bucks we used to charge for it.

Ella Fitzgerald & Count Basie - Ella and Basie!

Speakers Corner Debunked

  (Item #: fitzgella_and_basie_speakers_corner)

Sonic Grade: D

A weak outing from Speakers Corner and a Hall of Shame pressing.

Their 180 gram copy suffers from the standard reissue MO -- brighter is not necessarily better, and definitely not when you have a big band and a vocalist, as is the case here.

Brahms / Piano Concerto #1 / Curzon / Szell

Speakers Corner (Reviewed in the '90s)

  (Item #: brahmpiano_speakers_corner)

Sonic Grade: B

One of the better Speakers Corner Deccas. We haven't played a copy of this record in years, but back in the day we liked it, so let's call it a "B" with the caveat that the older the review, the more likely we are to have changed our minds. Not sure if we would still agree with what we wrote back when this record came out, but here it is anyway.

"One of the best of the Speakers Corner heavy vinyl reissues. As you may know they have gone way downhill lately. Haven't played this LP in a while but I remember liking it quite a bit."

Sergio Mendes - Look Around

Speakers Corner Reviewed

  (Item #: mendelooka_speakers_corner)

Sonic Grade: C

We were fairly impressed with the Speakers Corner pressing of this album when it came out on Heavy Vinyl years ago. Since then we have learned a lot. Their version is okay, not bad, but by no stretch of the imagination can it compete with any Hot Stamper pressing.

Elvis Presley - From Elvis in Memphis

Speakers Corner (Reviewed in the '90s)

  (Item #: preslfrome_speakers_corner)

Sonic Grade: B

One of the better Speakers Corner Heavy Vinyl remasters. (Probably. It's been a very long time since I played it.)

Speakers Corner did the album in 2003 and if memory serves I liked it and recommended it at the time. I rather doubt I could stand it now. I have much less tolerance now for the vague imaging, lack of ambience and overall lifeless quality their records invariably suffer from than I did then.

Mahler / Symphony No. 1 / Solti

Speakers Corner (Reviewed in the '90s)

  (Item #: mahlesym1_speakers_corner)

Sonic Grade: C+

A fairly good Speakers Corner Decca. We haven't played a copy of this record in years, but back in the day we liked it, so let's call it a "C+" with the caveat that the older the review, the more likely we are to have changed our minds. The right "real" pressing should be dramatically better sounding in every way. They almost always are.

Sarah Vaughan - Sarah Vaughan

Speakers Corner Reviewed

  (Item #: vaughsarah_speakers_corner)

A TOP TITLE from Speakers Corner on 180 gram. This is an outstanding Sarah Vaughan album with very good sound and top players like Clifford Brown on trumpet, Paul Quinichette on tenor sax and Herbie Mann on flute.

Tchaikovsky / 1812 Overture - Alwyn

Speakers Corner Reviewed

  (Item #: tchai1812_speakers_corner)

Sonic Grade: B

Excellent, one of the best of the Deccas. Better sound by far than the Classic with Reiner, although of course the original of that record is quite good. You may get better results if you reverse your absolute phase when playing this record. It's been a while since I did it so better to check it yourself and see how you like it each way.

Grieg / Peer Gynt / Fjeldstad / LSO

Speakers Corner Reviewed / VTA Advice

  (Item #: griegpeerg_speakers_corner)

The Fjeldstad has long been one of our favorite performances of Peer Gynt here at Better Records.

This record is handy for VTA set-up as well, a subject discussed below in our listing from 2010.

Stravinsky - Le Sacre du Printemps - Solti

Speakers Corner Reviewed

  (Item #: stravlesac_speakers_corner)

Sonic Grade: B

A fairly good Speakers Corner Decca.

Years ago we wrote the following: "Wow! What a performance! What dynamic full bodied sound! To be fair, I pulled out my original London, one of those awful mid-'70s English pressings that are never quiet, and yes, some of the ambience on the original is missing here on the new version, but everything else seems right: dynamics, tonality, the frequency extremes (including some pretty awesome deep bass)."

Can't be sure we would still feel that way but I'm guessing this is a good record if you can pick one up at a cheap price.

Rimsky-Korsakov - The Tale of Tsar Saltan

Speakers Corner Reviewed

  (Item #: rimsktaleo_speakers_corner)

Sonic Grade: C

We cracked open the Speakers Corner pressing shown here in order to see how it would fare up against a pair of wonderful sounding Londons we were in the process of shooting out a while ago. Here's what we heard in our head to head comparison.

The soundstage, never much of a concern to us at here at Better Records but nevertheless instructive in this case, shrinks roughly 25% with the new pressing; depth and ambience are reduced about the same amount. But what really bothered me was this: The sound was just so VAGUE.

  (Item #: respipines_speakers_corner)

Sonic Grade: C

We were only slightly impressed with the Speakers Corner pressing of this album, writing at the time: "The famous TAS List recording. Very good sound. You can do better but it's not easy. This work is just too difficult to record."

We have never done a Hot Stamper shootout of the album but hope to soon.

Gabor Szabo with Gary McFarland - Gypsy ’66

Heavy Vinyl Reviewed

  (Item #: szabogypsy_speakers_corner)

Sonic Grade: B?

Probably -- we haven't played a copy in years -- one of the better Speakers Corner jazz albums.

They cut a very good version of this album on Heavy Vinyl back in 2002, which we recommended at the time.

Our Hot Stamper pressings will of course be dramatically more transparent, open, clear and just plain REAL sounding, because these are all the areas in which heavy vinyl pressings fall short, with very few exceptions.

Schubert / The Trout Quintet / Curzon

Speakers Corner - Reviewed in the '90s

  (Item #: schubtrout_speakers_corner)

Sonic Grade: B?

We were impressed with the Speakers Corner pressing when it came out back in the day. We've come to learn that it is such an exceptional recording that even their second rate remastering of it was still capable of producing a very good sounding record.

One of the ways you can tell how great a recording this is is simply this: as soon as the needle hits the groove you are immediately involved in the music, listening to each of the lines created by the five preternaturally gifted players, all the while marveling at Schubert's compositional skills.

Mozart / Symphonies No. 40 & 41 / Giulini

Speakers Corner (Reviewed in the '90s)

  (Item #: mozarsym40_6225_reviewed)

Sonic Grade: B?

A fairly good Speakers Corner Decca. They released this title on Heavy Vinyl in 1998; it was one of the few Speakers Corner classical recordings we used to carry and recommend.

We knew it sounded good, but up until recently, when we started collecting and playing the better Deccas and Londons, we sure didn't know it could sound like one of our Hot Stampers!

Sonic Grade: B?

A fairly good Speakers Corner jazz album (we're guessing). Years ago we wrote the following: "Outstanding! Top recommendation! Rave reviews in the old catalog."

Hard to know what we think of this pressing today, but for the thirty bucks you might pay for it it's probably worth a listen.

Borodin / Symphonies 2 & 3 / Ansermet

Speakers Corner Reviewed

  (Item #: borodsymph_6126_debunk)

Sonic Grade: C?

A decent Speakers Corner Decca.

The Speakers Corner heavy vinyl reissue of this title is not bad, but like all reissues it lacks the weight found on this original. I remember it being a little flat and bright. I haven't played it in years so I could easily be wrong. The glorious sound I hear on the best pressings is not the kind of thing I hear on 180 gram records by Speakers Corner, or anybody else for that matter.

Steely Dan - Can’t Buy A Thrill

Speakers Corner Debunked

  (Item #: steelcantb_2015)

Sonic Grade: F

A Hall of Shame pressing.

This has to be one of the worst sounding versions ever pressed. You think the average ABC or MCA pressing is opaque, flat and lifeless, not to mention compromised at both ends of the frequency spectrum? You ain’t heard nothin’ yet!

As bad as the typical copy of this album is, the Speakers Corner Heavy Vinyl is even worse, with not a single redeeming quality to its credit.

Bizet / Carmen Fantaisie, etc. - Ricci / Gamba

Speakers Corner Reviewed

  (Item #: bizetcarme_debunk)

Sonic Grade: C

Speakers Corner remastered this title back in the '90s and did a decent enough job; I would guess my grade would be about a "C". We carried it and recommended it at the time. I doubt if I would have very many kind things to say about it now. We've played an enormous number of superb classical records in the last five years or so and the bar is dramatically higher than it used to be.

Rodrigo - Boieldieu / Harp Concertos

Speakers Corner Debunked

  (Item #: rodriharpc_debunk)

Sonic Grade: C-

About ten years ago a Heavy Vinyl version of this album was remastered and pressed by Speakers Corner, part of their disastrous foray into the DG catalog. This title was decent, the Beethoven Violin Concerto was okay, as was one of the Tchaicovsky Symphonies with Mravinsky (#5), but the rest were just plain awful, offering truly disgracefully bad sound.

Speakers Corner Reviewed

  (Item #: albensuite_speakerscorner)

Sonic Grade: B

One of the better Speakers Corner Deccas! Excellent sound and lovely music. This pressing also sounds much better than the Super Analogue pressing of the same music. When you get the right original pressing -- London or Decca -- they’re even better, but they sure are hard to find on quiet vinyl.

Chabrier / Espana - Argenta

Reviewed & Recommended

  (Item #: chabrespan_speakerscorner)

Sonic Grade: B

This is a Speakers Corner Decca 180 gram LP reissue of the famous Argenta performance, a recording which can sound positively amazing on the right original London, but only about 2 out of 10 copies actually do. (And where in the world are you going to find 10 clean copies of a record that’s practically 50 years old?)

This pressing gets you most of the way there, on reasonably quiet vinyl, for a lot less money.

Harry Pearson put this record on his TAS List of Super Discs.

Massenet - Le Cid Ballet & Meyerbeer - Les Patineurs

Speakers Corner Reviewed

  (Item #: masselecid_2021)

Sonic Grade: B

Finally a version of Le Cid that we can enjoy! Superb sound with a performance to match! No more suffering through the hi-fi-ish Doug Sax/ Acoustic Sounds rebutchering of the Fremaux on Klavier.

Audiophiles in droves bought into that one, apparently not noticing the overblown bass and spark-spark-sparkling top end. Thankfully we now have this Decca from Speakers Corner to demonstrate proper orchestral balance.

If your system needs boosted bass and highs keep the Klavier. If it doesn’t this Decca will allow you to forget about the sound and enjoy this lovely music.
