STUNNING SOUND THROUGHOUT -- this is one of the best sounding Bill Evans records we've ever heard! Side one here earned our top A+++ grade while side two earned a very strong A++. Bud Shank And the Sax Section

Our Shootout Winner from 2010

  (Item #: shankandth_2010)

A True Demo Disc of the highest order! The sound of multiple saxes playing these lively arrangements is audiophile magic to these ears. We played a ton of copies and none of them had two sides like this! You aren't going to believe how open, lively and tubey magical the sound is throughout.

Both sides here are SUPER HOT. It must have something very close to 100% of the sound the engineer recorded, because it is just out of this world. The engineer in question? None other than Bruce Botnick, the man behind Sergio Mendes' first album, The Doors, Love and countless others, a true wizard in the studio if ever there was one.

Bud Shank And the Sax Section

The Bass Sax - What a Sound

  (Item #: shankandth_wtlf)

What to Listen For you ask?

The reason this album is so appealing to us audiophiles is that the sound of each of the saxophones is clearly recognizable as they weave in and around these arrangements. On the back cover you can see a fellow holding a bass saxophone, an instrument you don't hear too often -- perhaps it's fallen from favor. (It solos at the beginning of Sidewinder on side one. Once you hear it you will be dying to play that song for your audiophile buddies, I guarantee it. What a sound!)

Coleman Hawkins / Ben Webster - Encounters

Classic Records Reviewed

  (Item #: hawkiencou_classic_records)

Sonic Grade: B

Probably a fairly good Classic Records jazz album. Years ago we wrote:

"A top top jazz title! This is one of our favorite Classic Records LPs from the old days when we were selling Heavy Vinyl. We haven't played this record in a long time but we liked it very much when it was in print in the '90s."

We can't be sure that we would still feel the same way. My guess is that this is still a fairly good record if you can get one for the 30 bucks we used to charge.

Duke Ellington and Ray Brown - This One’s For Blanton

Our Shootout Winner from 2006

  (Item #: ellinthiso_2006)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Jazz Hall of Fame.

BIG BOLD SOUND. It has that up front live in your living room sound. It’s very dynamic and tubey magical.

For this set of duets, pianist Duke Ellington is teamed up with bassist Ray Brown in performances a bit reminiscent of Duke’s work with Jimmy Blanton three decades before. In addition to the four-part Fragmented Suite for Piano and Bass, the duo plays five standards (including Pitter Panther Patter from the Blanton days and three other Ellington-associated tunes). Delightful and often-playful music. - AMG

Maybe it's the fact that there are only three instruments playing, live in the studio, that accounts for the amazing recording quality.   (Item #: petertrio_2018)

Peterson really puts on a great show. He's made an awful lot of records during his career and most of them aren't especially noteworthy. This album is clearly an exception to that rule. ("If You Could See Me Now" is another one.)

This pressing was a huge step up from the other copies we played in our recent shootout. This copy has the immediacy that puts you front and center at The London House for a great jazz show. Ray Brown is incredible on the bass here.

I've known this was a very well recorded album since I first heard the DCC gold CD back in the '90s.

It sounded great to me at the time -- I had nothing to compare it to -- but it sure didn't sound like this! This album is clearly one of the best jazz piano recordings I've ever played. In its own way it's every bit as good as that other landmark recording, The Three, from 1975.

These two sides offer bigger brass, more transparency and more presence than any other sides we played! This may become one of your favorite big band albums to demo or test with. Or you can just enjoy the hell out of it if you prefer. So transparent and tonally correct, this is a killer sounding copy. We put this one right up there with the best of the Verve jazz titles we've done to date.

It's time for our annual Countdown to Ecstasy -- whatever that is -- and for 2009 this copy took TOP HONORS with superb sound on both sides! We just finished doing a huge shootout for this album with well over a dozen copies, winnowed down from close to twenty at the start, and the winner and new champion is this very copy -- on the yellow label no less!

We had done shootouts in the past in which all the best copies of this album were on the black label, but this time around the yellow labels came out victorious.

Terry, Hubbard, Gillespie, & Peterson - The Alternate Blues

Our Shootout Winner from 2013

  (Item #: terryalter_2013)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Jazz Hall of Fame.

With Hot Stamper sound on both sides, this Pablo disc shows you what three of the greatest trumpeters of the last fifty years can do given the opportunity, nay, the encouragement, to let loose on a handful of classic slow blues jams. Many of the tracks here run in excess of eight minutes, giving the players plenty of space to explore, yet practically all of them are taken at a fairly slow pace, what used to be called a "slow drag", making them that much more involving and emotional. These are not your classic "blowing sessions" where the players try to outdo each other. No, this is something quite different.

The Three - The Three (33 RPM)

Our Direct Disc Copy from 2009

DEMO QUALITY, MASTER TAPE SOUND (!) on BOTH SIDES! Hey, wait a minute, this is the direct to disc version, there is no Master Tape. How can it have Master Tape Sound?

Simple. It's the RARE copy that actually sounds like this one. Most Eastwind pressings -- like pressings on any label -- do not convey all the information of the master tape that you know must exist because you HEAR it on some copies. Some Direct Discs have much more of the sound that was cut live directly onto the acetate than others. This is one of those, one of the ones with MUCH MORE SOUND!

The Three - The Three (45 RPM)

Our Four Plus Copy from 2013

  (Item #: threethree_45_2013)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Jazz Hall of Fame.

We had six (yes, six!) of these 45 RPM pressings (and five Inner City's and a couple of Eastwind 33's -- it was a big shootout), and this side one had the most ENERGY of any of them. This is a quality no one seems to be writing about, other than us of course, but what could possibly be more important? On this record, it took the performances of the players to a level beyond all expectations.
