Antonio Carlos Jobim - The Composer of...

Our Shootout Winner from 2008

  (Item #: jobimcompo_2008)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame. The sound is huge and spacious, with instruments popping out all over the place.

Credit engineer PHIL RAMONE for correctly capturing the sound of every instrument here: the guitars, piano, flutes, strings, drums, percussion instruments -- everything has the natural timbre of the real thing. I used to think this recording erred on the bright side, but not the Hot Stamper copies. They are tonally Right On The Money.

Astrud Gilberto - The Shadow Of Your Smile

Our Shootout Winner from 2017

  (Item #: gilbeshado_2017)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

The space is HUGE and the sound so rich. The vocals have dramatically less hardness and the orchestra sounds right for once. Prodigious amounts of Tubey Magic as well, which is key to the best sounding copies. The sound needs weight, warmth and tubes or you might as well be playing a CD.

Billy Joel - 52nd Street

Listening in Depth

  (Item #: joel_52nds_listen)

Presenting another entry in our extensive Listening in Depth series.

We heard some amazing sound coming from the grooves of 52nd Street, but let's give credit where credit is due -- the recording and mastering engineers involved with this album. Jim Boyer and Ted Jensen can both take great pride in the SUPERB work they have done here.

Billy Joel - 52nd Street

Our Shootout Winner from 2014

  (Item #: joel_52nds_2014)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

Both of these copies have one killer A+++ side and one that just didn't impress us, so we've paired them up to give you the best sound we possibly can for the entire album! This is in our opinion the Best Sounding Billy Joel Album, and when you hear this pressing you'll understand exactly why. Super open and transparent with real detail and texture, they just don't get any better than this.

Billy Joel - The Stranger

Our Shootout Winner from 2008

  (Item #: joel_stran_2008)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

THE BEST SOUNDING COPY OF THE STRANGER THAT WE’VE EVER HEARD! We just finished a major shootout for this album, and no copy came close to this bad boy. Side one has incredibly lively, MASTER TAPE quality sound, and side two isn’t far behind.

Bob Dylan & The Band - Before The Flood

Our Shootout Winner from 2012

  (Item #: dylanbefor_2012)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

One of the great Live Classic Rock albums of all time, now available in White Hot Stamper form! We recently undertook a massive shootout for this spirited double LP and three of the better sides from the whole shebang are on this here pressing. Sides one and two each earned our top grade of A+++, while side four clocked in at A++. Side three, as is often the case, was not quite up to the same standards.

Burt Bacharach - Casino Royale

Our Shootout Winner from 2008

  (Item #: bachacasin_2008)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

TWO STUNNING SIDES! With sound like this, I now understand why this has been such a highly regarded long-term resident of the TAS Superdisc List. A copy like this IS a TRUE SUPERDISC -- but the average copy of this album is anything but. Who could take such harsh, grainy, thin, veiled, compressed sound seriously? What was Harry smokin’?

I can honestly and truthfully say that until we discovered the Hot Stampers for this album, I never thought this record deserved the praise Harry heaped upon it. Now I do. I once was blind but now I see, or something like that.

Burt Bacharach - Reach Out

What to Listen For

  (Item #: bachareach_wtlf)

Another in our series of Home Audio Exercises with advice on What to Listen For (WTLF) as you critically evaluate your copy of Reach Out.

What to listen for? Brightness, Blare, Lifelessness, Smear.

We played a good-sized stack of these recently, but not many of them sounded like this one. The majority of copies had a tendency to be bright, which is MURDER when the horns start blaring at the levels we like to play our records at.

In addition there are plenty of copies out there that lack energy, while others suffer from transient smearing, clearly audible on the brass.

Chicago - Chicago VI

Our Shootout Winner from 2016

  (Item #: chicachica6_2016)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

The background vocals on these sides are super-breathy and clear, a far cry from the typically smeary, dark voices we heard on most of the pressings we played, all originals in this case.

More often than not the brass lacks bite and presence, but these sides had the Chicago horns leaping out of the speakers. What is a Chicago record without great horns? Without that big bold sound you may have something, but it sure ain't Chicago.

Gerry Mulligan - Spring Is Sprung

Our Shootout Winner from 2018

  (Item #: mullisprin_2018)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Jazz Hall of Fame.

With Shootout Winning Triple Plus (A+++) grades on both sides, it just doesn't get any better than this copy of Mulligan's superb sounding and Hard To Find 1963 release on the rare Philips label. Phil Ramone made sure the album would be exceptionally well-recorded, which it is! Big, rich, and Tubey Magical, here is Mulligan's quartet with the energy and clarity these classic jazz performances deserve.

Kenny Loggins - Celebrate Me Home

Our Shootout Winner from 2011

  (Item #: loggiceleb_2011)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

This WHITE HOT Stamper side one shows you just how good this record can sound, which is surprisingly good, considering how many copies of the album are just plain awful. Finally, most of the grit, grain and transistory opacity have fallen away, leaving in its place the rich, full-bodied and Tubey Magical '70s sound one would expect.

Paul Simon - There Goes Rhymin’ Simon

Our Shootout Winner from 2008

  (Item #: simonthere_2008)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

TWO LOVELY SIDES, including a side one that takes this music to an entirely new level! People have been telling me for years how good this album can sound, but until we played this copy I didn’t realize just how right they were. This side one has STAGGERING presence and a MASSIVE three-dimensional soundfield that we simply did not hear anywhere else. The sound is airy, open, spacious and SO transparent, and the energy factor is OFF THE CHARTS. Drop the needle and brace yourself for rich, full-bodied sound that jumps out of the speakers and fills the room!

Yet another wonderful Getz Samba record, the third in the series. Some of our faourite music has this Samba syncopation: Sergio Mendes, first and foremost of course, but also Airto, and all the wonderful Getz albums from this period. Their enchanting Brazilian rhythms make their music fun.

The Band - Rock Of Ages

Our Shootout Winner from 2009

  (Item #: band_rocko_2009)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

White Hot Stampers for side two -- WOW! Check out the track listing for that side: Stage Fright / The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down / Across the Great Divide / This Wheel’s on Fire / Rag Mama Rag

Pretty hard to beat that batch of Band songs; practically every one is a classic. And considering how difficult it is to get a good sounding copy of the albums those songs are taken from, this double album is a great way to go if you love The Band. The performances are uniformly excellent, and the live horn section adds a lot to the fun and energy of the music.

The Band - Rock Of Ages

Turn Up Your Volume, Now It Rocks!

  (Item #: band_rocko_volume)

Yet another record that really comes to life when you Turn Up Your Volume.

Most copies of this album do not have a boosted bottom or top, which means that at normal listening levels -- depending on how you define that term -- they can sound pretty flat. This is one album that needs to be turned up, obviously not to the levels of a live rock concert, but up about as loud as you can until you can get the bass and the highs to come out. We found ourselves adding more and more level in order to get the sound to come to life, and it was playing pretty loud before the sound was right.
