White Hot Stamper

Leon Russell
Leon Russell

  (Item #: russeleonr_1908)

Our Price: $299.99

  • This UK pressing of Russell's debut release boasts AMAZING Triple Plus (A+++) sound on both sides
  • His first and best album, engineered by our man Glyn Johns, but it only sounds this brilliant on these UK original pressings - the domestic LPs are dead on arrival
  • Delta Lady, A Song for You and Roll Away the Stone are all here, which makes this a true Must Own for fans of the Classic Era
  • 4 1/2 stars: "Leon Russell never quite hit all the right notes the way he did on his eponymous debut. He never again seemed as convincing in his grasp of Americana music and themes, never again seemed as individual, and never again did his limited, slurred bluesy voice seem as ingratiating."

White Hot Stamper

Badfinger
Straight Up

  (Item #: badfistrai_1904_6_9)

Our Price: $249.99

  • A KILLER copy of the band's third release with Shootout Winning Triple Plus (A+++) sound or close to it on both sides
  • Rich, clear and lively, with 3-D studio space, this is the band's Masterpiece sounding right
  • On the best copies - like this one - the music just JUMPS out of the speakers
  • 4 1/2 stars: "There's absolutely no filler... everybody is in top form. "Baby Blue" is textbook power-pop — irresistibly catchy fuzz riffs and sighing melodies — and with its Harrison-esque slide guitars, "Day After Day" is so gorgeous it practically aches. This fine songwriting, combined with sharp performances and exquisite studio craft, make Straight Up one of the cornerstones of power-pop, a record that proved that it was possible to make classic guitar-pop after its golden era had passed."

Our Price: $249.99

  • Carney as a recording is classic analog from 1972 - the best vintage copies are exceptionally rich, solid and smooth
  • Russell's highest charting album, making it all the way to Number Two if you can believe that, no doubt on the strength of the hit single, "Tight Rope,' but "This Masquerade" is on here too
  • "The music is good, the lyrics are entertaining, the album worthwhile. Leon Russell – the only man around that can pull it off when he’s not trying." - Cameron Crowe (San Diego Door, Aug. 1972)

Super Hot Stamper

Joe Cocker
Mad Dogs And Englishmen

  (Item #: cockemaddo_1911)

Our Price: $149.99

  • An outstanding copy with all four sides earning Double Plus (A++) grades and playing about as quietly as these good, clean originals ever do
  • The sound is rich and tubey, with driving energy and the top end and clarity that was simply missing from far too many of the copies we had to wade through in order to find this one
  • 4 1/2 stars: "Unlike a lot of other "coffee table"-type rock releases of the era, such as Woodstock and The Concert for Bangladesh, people actually listened to Mad Dogs & Englishmen -- most of its content was exciting, and its sound, a veritable definition of big-band rock with three dozen players working behind the singer, was unique."

Badfinger - Straight Up

Our Shootout Winner from 2010

  (Item #: badfistrai_2010)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

This relatively quiet WHITE HOT STAMPER Straight Up is KILLER, with a A++ side one and an A+++ side two -- you can't do much better than that! Side two has Master Tape Sound, the kind that we like to call AGAIG -- As Good As It Gets. Both sides have the kind of PRESENCE in the midrange that most copies can't begin to compete with. The sound here just JUMPS out of the speakers, which is exactly what the best copies of the album are supposed to (but rarely) do. For fans of the band -- and Power Pop in general -- this is the Straight Up you have been waiting for!

Joe Cocker - Mad Dogs and Englishmen

Our Shootout Winner from 2012

  (Item #: cockemaddo_2012)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

This original A&M 2 LP pressing has FOUR EXCELLENT SIDES, including a shootout-winning A+++ SIDE TWO!

We did not give out a lot of top grades on this record -- Super Hot is WAY better than most of what we heard (which to be honest was just not very good, a subject we discuss below). Overall this is the best copy to ever hit the site, boasting plenty of soulful rock and roll energy.

Leon Russell - Leon Russell and the Shelter People

We Broke Through in 2017

  (Item #: russeleonrussel_and_2017)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

The domestic pressings of Leon Russell and the Shelter People that we'd auditioned over the years always seemed flat, dry, and closed-in. We know that sound well; it's the sound you hear on records that have been made from dubbed tapes (and it's the hallmark of the modern Heavy Vinyl reissue, truth be told). It bores us to tears, and had us questioning what we could possibly have seen in the album in the first place. What happened to the glorious sound of early '70s analog we were expecting to find?
