White Hot Stamper

John Mayall with Eric Clapton
Blues Breakers

  (Item #: mayalblues_1907)

Our Price: $499.99

  • With a Triple Plus (A+++) side one and a Double Plus (A++) side two, this copy took top honors in our recent shootout - and the UK vinyl is as QUIET as we ever expect to find
  • These early Unboxed Decca pressings, when you get a good one, are richer, smoother and livelier than anything else, and they offer boatloads of Tubey Magic and space
  • 5 stars: "Eric Clapton's first fully realized album as a blues guitarist -- more than that, it was a seminal blues album of the 1960s, perhaps the best British blues album ever cut, and the best LP ever recorded by John Mayall's Bluesbreakers."

Super Hot Stamper (quiet)

John Mayall and The Bluesbreakers
A Hard Road

  (Item #: mayalhardr_1909_)

Our Price: $199.99

  • An outstanding copy of the band's third album, with solid Double Plus (A++) sound on both sides - reasonably quiet vinyl for this title too
  • Forget the dubby domestic pressings and whatever crappy Heavy Vinyl record they're making these days - these early UK stereo LPs are the only way to fly
  • 4 stars: "Eric Clapton is usually thought of as John Mayall's most important right-hand man, but the case could also be made for his successor, Peter Green. The future Fleetwood Mac founder leaves a strong stamp on his only album with the Bluesbreakers, singing a few tracks and writing a couple, including the devastating instrumental 'Supernatural.'"

  • The Decca UK vinyl on this superb pressing is as QUIET as we ever expect to find for this album
  • 5 stars: "Bluesbreakers was Eric Clapton's first fully realized album as a blues guitarist -- more than that, it was a seminal blues album of the 1960s, perhaps the best British blues album ever cut, and the best LP ever recorded by John Mayall's Bluesbreakers."

Super Hot Stamper

John Mayall
The Turning Point

  (Item #: mayalturni_1905)

Our Price: $149.99

  • An outstanding copy with solid Double Plus (A++) sound from start to finish
  • This is a superb recording, something that cannot be said for most of Mayall's output from this period (and none of his later albums in our experience)
  • More importantly, this is some of the best music we have ever heard by the man - this is a uniquely special group effort
  • 4 1/2 Stars: "This album also signifies a distinct departure from the decibel-drowning electrified offerings of his previous efforts, providing instead an exceedingly more folk- and roots-based confab... [Jon] Mark's precision and tasteful improvisational skills [on acoustic guitar] place this incarnation into heady spaces."

Super Hot Stamper

Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee
Sonny and Brownie

  (Item #: terrysonny_1907_9)

Our Price: $74.99

  • With superb Double Plus (A++) grades or close to them on both sides, so natural and relaxed - this is the right sound for this bluesy music - exceptionally quiet vinyl too
  • This early pressing puts a Folk Blues jam from 1973 live in your living room, showcasing two of the true masters of the form
  • The immediacy, clarity and transparency are excellent, but the key element is Tubey Magical warmth, and these vintage pressings have plenty of it
  • 4 1/2 stars: "John Mayall and John Hammond, Jr. are among the "youngsters" on this powerful statement that includes a definitive version of Randy Newman's wickedly subtle anti-slavery tune Sail Away."

Joe Cocker - Joe Cocker (1969)

Our Shootout Winner from 2016

  (Item #: cockejoeco_1969_2016)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

I put this album up against the best Cocker has ever made. He released both of his first two albums in 1969, strikingly reminiscent of another band we revere, Led Zeppelin. (Small world: Jimmy Page plays on Cocker's first release.)

The consistently high quality of the material is another reason this album has to be considered a Must Own. Did Cocker ever release an album with more good songs than these? On side one alone you'll find Dear Landlord; Bird on the Wire; She Came in Through the Bathroom Window; and Hitchcock Railway. On side two: Something; Delta Lady; Hello, Little Friend; and Darling Be Home Soon.

John Mayall - Empty Rooms

Our Shootout Winner from 2015

  (Item #: mayalempty_2015)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

With only keyboards, guitars, saxes and flutes -- the absence of a drummer is especially noteworthy -- the group creates a mystical, low-key atmosphere in the studio within which JM tells his stories. In other words, it's different. When it comes to John Mayall's recorded works, that's not a bad thing.

John Mayall with Eric Clapton - Blues Breakers

Our Shootout Winner from 2016

  (Item #: mayalblues_2016)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

DRAMATICALLY SUPERIOR to the typical pressing, the MOFI Gold CD and every other version that I know of. This is it folks! They cut this one right. It sounds the way you always wished it would sound. We've been searching for these for years -- everyone wants a great copy, but they are TOUGH to come by.

Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee - Sonny and Brownie

Our Shootout Winner from 2013

  (Item #: terrysonny_2013)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

SUPERB A+++ DEMO DISC SOUND and DEAD QUIET VINYL on both sides of this A & M pressing! What a record! I'd be willing to bet my bottom dollar that you couldn't find ANY version of this music that sounded better than this. The sound is RIGHT ON THE MONEY from top to bottom, start to finish. The immediacy, clarity and transparency are OFF THE CHARTS -- this record puts a killer blues jam right there in your living room!
