Sadly, this European jaunt would be the last of its kind to include the formidable talents and soul of founding member Ron "Pigpen" McKernan, who was in increasingly fragile health. Although few in number, his contributions to Europe '72 are among the most commanding not only of this release, but of his career."

Crosby, Still and Nash - Replay

Listening in Depth

  (Item #: crosbrepla_vta)

This is another very handy record for setting your Vertical Tracking Angle. The end of Shadow Captain has loud vocals and punchy bass, which are a bit difficult to reproduce. (Forget trying to get this song to sound good if you don’t have an exceptionally good copy.)

The next song is To The Last Whale, which starts with Nash and Crosby's multitracked voices in a big hall. With the correct VTA, their voices should sound silky and sweet. If your arm is too far down in the back, they will get a bit dull. Too high, and they will lose that breathy, "fluffy" quality. And once you get their voices to sound just right, make sure the ending of Shadow Captain is still punchy and dynamic.

Listening for Harmonically Correct Acoustic Guitars

  (Item #: ameriameri_listen)

Another in our series of Home Audio Exercises.

The guitars on this record are a true test of stereo fidelity. As it says below, most of the pressings of this record do not get the guitars to sound right. They often sound veiled and dull, and on a copy with a bit too much top end they will have an unnatural hi-fi-ish sparkle.

This kind of sparkle can be heard on practically every record Mobile Fidelity made in the ’70s and ’80s.

The big sound on both sides lets this Greatest Hits compilation hold its own against the originals. Side One has amazing CLARITY and PRESENCE, which is especially noticeable on the vocals. Side Two has plenty of bottom end that drives these songs with energy and life. Listen for the bells on 'Tin Man'; they have the correct transients and harmonics. You never quite get back all of the Tubey Magic of the originals, but the detail and richness are enough to make you fall in love with this high quality George Martin (re) production.

One of the BEST copies we've played in many years, close to five I would guess. Brewer and Shipley's first and only release for A&M has long been a Desert Island disc in my world. Do All the Robert Ludwig Mastered Copies Have Hot Stampers?

  (Item #: brewetarki_RL)

Even though all the original Pink Label pressings are mastered by Robert Ludwig, they have a marked tendency to be dull, thick and opaque. The sound is just too smooth. The best copies however have the top end and the transparency to let you hear all the guitar and vocal harmonics, surrounded by the large acoustic of the studio.

This time around we discovered something new: one specific stamper that seemed to be the only one with the potential for an extended top end. This special stamper did not always fare well; some copies with it were mediocre. We have always found this to be the way with the "right" stampers; they often let us down and sometimes they really let us down hard.

Notes from an Early Shootout (2007)

  (Item #: stevemonab_2007)

This album is one of Cat's top four titles both musically and sonically. Tea and Teaser are in a league of their own, but this album and Catch Bull At Four are close behind. The music is WONDERFUL -- the best tracks (including I Wish I Wish and I Think I See The Light) rank right up there with anything from his catalog. Sonically, it's not an epic recording on the scale of Tea or Teaser [WRONG] but with Paul Samwell-Smith at the helm you can be sure it's an excellent sounding album -- on the right pressing.

Before we start discussing this record, let’s talk about the price for a moment. I have never put a used rock record on this site at this price. I’ve sold other records directly to my best customers for this kind of money, but this is the first $500 rock record of its kind to go on this website. This is the result of three factors. First, it's the best sounding copy of this record I have ever heard (on side two anyway). Second, this is Teaser and the Firecat, one of the most important recordings in the history of popular music. Third, it's amazingly quiet. The confluence of these three factors makes this copy practically unique.

TWO AMAZING SIDES RATING AT OR NEAR A+++! This is the pair's third and best album, with better sound than Wind on the Water as well as their strongest songwriting. This is arguably a better CSN record than the album titled CSN from 1977. For one thing, the harmonies are superior, even without Stephen Stills. Crosby, Stills and Nash - CSN

Our Shootout Winner from 2013

  (Item #: crosbcsn_2013)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock Hall of Fame.

This original LP is clearly the best sounding side one of this album we have ever played. Most copies of CSN are unbelievably flat, harsh, thin and opaque.

Which means simply that our approach is the only one that offers any hope of success. With a large enough batch of copies, cleaned using the best fluids, on the best machines, it is possible to find a side one this good. Without a pretty big batch of well-cleaned pressings your chance of success is hardly worth calculating. Even with the best intentions, frustration is likely to set in long before a Hot Stamper as good as this one has much chance of being found.

You Do the Best You Can with What You've Got to Work With

  (Item #: crosbcsn_wtlf)

Another in our series of Home Audio Exercises with advice on what you should be listening for when critically evaluating your copy (or ours) of the album.

CSN chose the Albert brothers to engineer this album. Their most famous album is Layla. Ever heard a great sounding Layla? Me neither. Can you hear the sound of Layla in your head? That's more or less what this album sounds like. There are better and worse Layla's -- we've done the shootout many times -- just as there are better and worse CSNs.

The problem with the sound cannot be "fixed" in the mastering, and here's how we know: on either side some songs have the breath of life and some don't. That's a recording problem. .

If the singers get hard and shrill in the louder passages, then what you have is a pretty typical pressing. It's not even two minutes long, but it's two really wonderful minutes of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young at the height of their powers. Of course it's easy to argue that finding good sound on an album with two or more members of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, in any configuration, has never been easy. It's the rare copy of either of the first two albums that's even listenable, and the CSN album from 1977 doesn't sound nearly as good as any of the first three Crosby/Nash albums. Note how Crosby's voice is "chesty" -- some copies make him sound like he's all mouth and no diaphragm. We went through all of 2008 without finding a single Hot Stamper copy of this great album, but today I am pleased to report that American Beauty Hot Stampers are back in stock at Better Records! Drop the needle on any track on either side -- I guarantee you’ve never heard this band sound so good, or your money back.

The Grateful Dead - Workingman's Dead

Our Shootout Winner from 2012

STUNNING MASTER TAPE SOUND ON SIDE TWO, as good as it gets! I don’t think you could ask any more from this music than what this magical side two gives you -- breathy vocals with mindblowing immediacy; incredible depth and width to the soundfield; rich, round bass with real WEIGHT; a silky, extended top end; tons of ambience; tons of tubey magic and so on. It’s also open, spacious, and super transparent. The sound positively JUMPS out of the speakers and fills the room. Black Peter is INSANELY GOOD on this side -- you’re gonna flip when you hear it.

Watch for Strain in Jerry's Voice

  (Item #: grateworki_depth)

Presenting another entry in our extensive Listening in Depth series.

High Time tells you the most about the sound of side one on any given copy. If the pressing in question is lean, bright, grainy, transistory or aggressive in any way, Jerry Garcia's voice will sound strained. Far from a professionally trained singer, he's already straining to some degree on even the best copies.

The Lovin' Spoonful - John Sebastian Songbook, Vol. 1

Our Shootout Winner from 2017

  (Item #: lovinjohns_2017)

Great sound for some the biggest hits of The Lovin' Spoonful, a band I wouldn't have expected to hear sound good on vinyl if I lived to be a hundred, and yet, here it is. This is one of the rare cases where, in our experience, the hits compilation sounds BETTER than the original records. Why? Who knows? We don't pretend to have all the answers. What we do have (that no one else has, if that's not too obvious) are the records that back up the claims we make for them.
