America - History: America’s Greatest Hits

Our Shootout Winner from 2018

  (Item #: amerihisto_2018)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

The big sound on both sides lets this Greatest Hits compilation hold its own against the originals. Side One has amazing CLARITY and PRESENCE, which is especially noticeable on the vocals. Side Two has plenty of bottom end that drives these songs with energy and life. Listen for the bells on 'Tin Man'; they have the correct transients and harmonics. You never quite get back all of the Tubey Magic of the originals, but the detail and richness are enough to make you fall in love with this high quality George Martin (re) production.

Badfinger - Straight Up

Our Shootout Winner from 2010

  (Item #: badfistrai_2010)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

This relatively quiet WHITE HOT STAMPER Straight Up is KILLER, with a A++ side one and an A+++ side two -- you can't do much better than that! Side two has Master Tape Sound, the kind that we like to call AGAIG -- As Good As It Gets. Both sides have the kind of PRESENCE in the midrange that most copies can't begin to compete with. The sound here just JUMPS out of the speakers, which is exactly what the best copies of the album are supposed to (but rarely) do. For fans of the band -- and Power Pop in general -- this is the Straight Up you have been waiting for!

Paul McCartney & Wings - Band On The Run

Our Shootout Winner from 2011

  (Item #: mccarbando_2011)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

This British Original looking EMI Black Label LP has THE BEST SOUND I HAVE EVER HEARD FOR THIS ALBUM. Most pressings of this album leave a lot to be desired. They typically sound like they're made from second-rate dubs.

A song like Jet can be positively painful on most of the LPs that you run across. Here, practically for the first time, it actually sounds good, with plenty of deep bass that I'm not used to hearing. Following Jet is probably the best sounding track on side one, Bluebird. It's amazingly sweet and transparent on this LP. Like I say, I don't think I've ever heard a better copy.

Our Shootout Winner from 2011

  (Item #: mccarunplu_2011)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

WHITE HOT STAMPERS and QUIET VINYL on BOTH SIDES make this the best copy of McCartney's Unplugged to ever hit the site! We just finished a huge shootout for this Better Records favorite and this pressing really blew us away, clearly the best sounding on both sides out of a big stack of copies. The sound is rich, full-bodied and amazingly present, with the kind of jumpin'-out-of-the-speakers sound that you only get on the best pressings.

Life-Size Images and Living Presence

  (Item #: mccarunplu_listen)

Another in our series of Home Audio Exercises. (This is one of our earliest ones, from all the way back in 2006!)

On the song Blackbird Paul moves the microphone, scraping it along the floor, which causes a huge wave of bass to envelop the room. I was over at one of my customer's houses a while ago, doing some testing with electronics and tweaks, and I remember distinctly that the microphone stand was shrunken and lean sounding in a way I had never heard before. Now this customer, whose system was in the $100K range, had no idea what that microphone stand could really do. I did, because I've been hearing it do it for years.

Robin Trower - Bridge of Sighs

Our Shootout Winner from 2015

  (Item #: trowebridg_2015)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

Triple Triple! The best copy of Robin Trower's masterpiece to ever make it to the site. This glorious early UK pressing is huge, rich and super punchy, just about as good as it gets. Brilliant engineering by GEOFF EMERICK at George Martin's AIR studios - maybe the best sounding album Emerick ever made. Coming soon to a Better Records Top 100 List near you.

Stealers Wheel - Stealers Wheel

Our Shootout Winner from 2018

  (Item #: stealsteal_2018)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

Forget the dubby domestic pressings. Like so many British bands on the A&M label, when it came time to master the album for the domestic market, the people in charge (whoever they may have been) took the easy way out and simply ordered up a dub of the master tape to cut the album from.

Spooky Tooth, Procol Harum, Fairport Convention, (my beloved) Squeeze and too many others to think about all had their records ruined by sub-generation masters.

  (Item #: steelallar_2013)

The best copy to ever hit the site! It ain't easy to find clean British pressings of this one, which is why it's taken us so long to get a copy like this up on the site. We played a good sized stack of these recently and only a couple did the job well enough to be considered Hot Stampers. This one is a big step up, with way less of the thick / murky / veiled sound that plagues many copies.

Supertramp - Even In The Quietest Moments

Our Shootout Winner from 2015

  (Item #: supereveni_2015)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

A killer pressing! So much clearer, cleaner and more transparent than we remember from last time around, with more Tubey Magic too.

The bottom end is big and punchy, the top is smooth and sweet, and the vocals are present and breathy. On a transparent copy such as this the drums really punch through the dense mixes clearly, giving the music more life and energy. The piano sounds correct, the sax is full and breathy -- you'd be very hard-pressed to find better sound for this album than this. Very hard pressed indeed.

Making Progress in Audio

  (Item #: supereveni_progress)

The story behind this record is what real Progress in Audio is all about.

We wrote up this album in 2005 as a Hot Stamper Stalled listing. We just could not find anything that sounded right to us. The imports were a smeary mess, the half-speed was and is a complete joke (we used to like it but that just goes to show how wrong you can be), and the domestic copies were so grainy and phony-sounding we knew there was no way to make the case that this was an actual audiophile-quality recording.

What to Listen For

  (Item #: supereveni_wtlf)

Another in our series of Home Audio Exercises with advice on What to Listen For (WTLF) as you critically evaluate your copy of EITQM.

The piano on Give a Little Bit can get buried in the dense mix. Side ones that are rich and tubey and smooth with a clear piano did very well in our shootout.

Lover Boy is a Demo Quality Track on the best copies. It can be huge, spacious and lively. Getting the strings to sound harmonically rich without sliding into shrillness may not be easy but some copies manage it. On the biggest, richest copies the breakdown at about 2:20 is a lot of fun.

Listening in Depth

  (Item #: beatlabbey_depth)

Another in our series of Home Audio Exercises with advice on What to Listen For (WTLF) as you critically evaluate your copy of Abbey Road.

Those of you who follow the site (or do your own shootouts) know that it’s much tougher to find great copies of Abbey Road than it is for MMT or Please Please Me. Most of the copies we’ve played just aren’t good enough to put on the site. For whatever reasons -- probably because this recording is so complicated and required so many tracks -- Abbey Road is arguably the toughest nut to crack in the Beatles' catalog.

This Minty Apple British Import pressing has MASTER TAPE SOUND ON SIDE ONE! We just finished a big Abbey Road shootout (1/16/07) and this side one was IN A LEAGUE OF ITS OWN!

This is the first Hot Stamper Abbey Road we’ve ever listed ... and there's a good reason for that. It's practically impossible to find a properly mastered copy. For whatever reasons -- probably because this recording is so complicated and required so many tracks -- Abbey Road is the toughest nut to crack in the Beatles' catalog.

The Beatles - Beatles For Sale

A Forgotten Rock and Pop Classic

  (Item #: beatlforsa_forgotten)

The Beatles' Forgotten Rock and Pop Classic.

We had a lot of fun reading The Complete Beatles Recording Sessions, which details the band's studio history from 1962 - 1970. In the book, George Martin mentions that he felt this album was a rush job and that he has trouble listening to it to this day. As much respect as we have for The Fifth Beatle, we couldn't disagree more. For Sale is simply wonderful.

As we played copy after copy for our shootout, the more enjoyable these 14 Folk Rock songs became. Repeated listening to track after track only enhanced our appreciation. And as is always the case, stumbling upon the Shootout Winning copy was a thrill that allowed us to hear more in the music than we ever thought possible.

MASTER TAPE SOUND ON SIDE ONE! We feel Beatles For Sale is a criminally underappreciated album, and a killer copy like this will show you exactly why. The startling presence and immediacy allow the emotional qualities of these lovely songs to really come through. The clarity of the vocals is going to blow you away. No matter what copy you’ve been listening to, I’m completely confident that this one will slaughter it. We play a ton of these every year, but there’s a good reason you don’t see too many of them hit the site -- most of them bore us to tears.

Germans Versus Brits

Another in our series of Home Audio Exercises with advice on What to Listen For (WTLF) as you critically evaluate your copy of Help.

We've heard some excellent German pressings before, but this time [circa 2011] nothing could match up to our best Brit copies. What the best British copies have is more of the TUBEY MAGIC that can typically be heard on early pressings, due no doubt to the fact that they are mastered with tube equipment.

Are Your Cellists Digging In?

  (Item #: beatlmagic_walruscellos)

Another in our series of Home Audio Exercises.

Over the last decade I Am The Walrus has evolved into a good test for side one, a fact that came as a complete surprise to me. As I was listening to the various copies in a shootout years ago I noted that the opening cellos and basses in the right channel were often tonally identical from copy to copy, but sounded quite a bit more lively and energetic on some pressings relative to others. Was it EQ? Level? Compression?

Why so much more passion from the players on some copies and not others?

We Was Wrong (Circa the '80s)

  (Item #: beatlmagic_wrong)

This is a VERY old and somewhat embarrassing We Was Wrong from a few years back.

This German pressing has dramatically different sound than that found on other Hot Stamper pressings of MMT we've had on the site. I used to be convinced that its sound was clearly superior to the regular German MMT LPs. Back in the late '80s and into the '90s this was the pressing that I was certain blew them all out of the water. We know better now. We call this version the "Too Hot Stamper" pressing -- the upper mids and top end are much hotter than they should be.

Sonic Grade: F

A great sounding record in stereo, potentially anyway, but this later reissue in mono is so awful it deserves a special place in our Hall of Shame.

My notes for side one: hard, sour, no bass. Side two: dumbass small mono, so unclear.

The Beatles - The White Album

Listening in Depth

  (Item #: beatlwhite_depth)

Another in our series of Home Audio Exercises with plenty of What to Listen For (WTLF) tips.

It's exceedingly difficult to find audiophile quality sound on The White Album. The Beatles were breaking apart, often recording independently of each other, with their own favorite engineers as enablers, and George Martin nowhere to be found most of the time. They were also experimenting more and more with sound itself, which resulted in wonderful songs and interesting effects. However, these new approaches and added complexity often result in a loss of sonic "purity."

The Early Pressings Are the Best, Right?

  (Item #: beatlwitht_myth)

Nope. It’s just another Record Myth.

So many Parlophone copies would have you think With The Beatles is a gritty, edgy, crude recording -- especially if you made the mistake of buying an early pressing. The early pressings are consistently grittier, edgier and more crude than the later pressings we played.

So much for the old canard that Original Always Equals Better. When it comes to With The Beatles it just ain't so, and it doesn't take a State-of-the-Art system or pair of golden ears to hear it.

The World of the Zombies is for all intents and purposes a reissue of their 1965 debut album, Begin Here, with a few track changes, the most important of which is the addition of Tell Her No.
