John Baldry - It Ain't Easy

Our Shootout Winner from 2017

  (Item #: baldritain_2017)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

A few years ago while I was working on the site I had music on youtube playing. The song "Flying" came on from the It Ain't Easy album, and when the chorus came in I could not believe how big, rich and powerful it sounded -- this, on computer speakers!

I tracked down my copy of the album, the domestic Green Label WB pressing with a different cover you no doubt have seen in your local record store bin and threw it on the table for a quick listen. In moments it was obvious that my domestic original was a big step down sonically from what I imagined the source for the youtube video sound would have been.

  (Item #: bowiespace_1811_1903)

Our Price: $149.99
Sale Price: $119.00 (You save $30.99 / 21%)

  • With outstanding Double Plus (A++) grades or BETTER on both sides, this is the right sound for Bowie's 1969 classic
  • This killer pressing is full-bodied and lively, with solid and present vocals, as well as excellent clarity all around
  • Ken Scott engineered at Trident, and Rick Wakeman plays a mean mellotron on some tracks - what's not to like?
  • "Abandoning both the mod and Anthony Newley fascinations that marked his earlier recordings, Bowie delves into a lightly psychedelic folk-rock, exemplified by the album's soaring title track..."

David Bowie - Space Oddity

Our Shootout Winner from 2014

  (Item #: bowiespace_2014)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock Hall of Fame.

One of the reasons the song "Space Oddity" sounds so amazing is that it was produced by none other than Gus Dudgeon, the man behind all the best Elton John records. It has Paul Buckmaster doing the string arrangements as well. His work on Elton's self-titled album is awe-inspiring; we know of none better.

Jackson Browne - For Everyman

Our Shootout Winner from 2010

  (Item #: brownforev_2010)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

An excellent copy of JB's sophomore effort, with wonderful Double Plus (A++) sound on both sides. Rich, smooth and musical, with plenty of bottom end weight, this is the way you want to hear it. David Lindley joins the band, and the likes of Bonnie Raitt, Glen Frey, David Crosby, Elton John and Joni Mitchell contribute.

The average copy of this record is absolute MUD, but this one shows you that the master tape of For Everyman is a whole lot better than most audiophiles would suspect. (The first album is the same way.)

A Classic of Classic Rock

The Heart and Soul of Better Records

  (Item #: claptericc_classic_rock)

We had a killer pressing a few years back which sounded a whole lot better than I ever thought the album could sound. Man, what a revelation to hear an old favorite -- a Forgotten Classic --sound so amazingly spacious and sweet.

I've been playing this album since 1970, the year it came out. Back then my collection was made up of albums by The Beatles, The Doors, Buffalo Springfield, Crosby Stills and Nash, America, Rod Stewart, Led Zeppelin, Elton John, Chicago, James Taylor, Spirit, The Band, Loggins and Messina, Blind Faith, Bread, The Who ...

What To Listen For

  (Item #: crackanima_wtlf)

Another in our series of Home Audio Exercises with advice on What to Listen For (WTLF) as you critically evaluate your Crack the Sky records.

The best vintage rock recordings usually have something going for them that few recordings made after the '70s do: their choruses get big and loud, yet stay smooth, natural and uncongested.

We've mentioned it in countless listings. So many records have -- to one degree or another -- harsh, hard, gritty, shrill, congested choruses. When the choruses get loud they become unpleasant, and here at Better Records you lose a lot of points when that happens.

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock Hall of Fame and another in the long list of recordings that really comes alive when you Turn Up Your Volume.

Here it is, folks -- the best sounding copy of Mystery To Me to ever hit our site. This copy positively DOES IT ALL -- it's super open and spacious with tons of energy and incredible presence. The bottom end is just KILLER and there's dramatically more richness and fullness than you get on most copies out there.

Whomp Factor on "Why"

  (Item #: fleetmyste_wtlf)

Another in our series of Home Audio Exercises with advice on What to Listen For (WTLF) as you critically evaluate your copy of the album.

There is an amazing bass drum on this album that plays on selective tracks, most notably the song "Why", and it will shake the foundation and knock your knick-knacks right off their shelves if you've got the woofers (and the room) to play it right. I was using this record to demo my system in the mid-'70s. I had a pair of Fulton Js and they could really pump out the low end this record needs.

Captain Fantastic & the Brown Dirt Cowboy

  (Item #: john_capta_1805_1903)

Our Price: $99.99

  • You'll find superb Double Plus (A++) sound or close to it on both sides of this early UK pressing - exceptionally quiet vinyl too
  • Includes two of our favorites: (Gotta Get A) Meal Ticket and the massive hit Someone Saved My Life Tonight
  • 5 stars: "Elton John and Bernie Taupin recalled their rise to power in Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy, their first explicitly conceptual effort since Tumbleweed Connection. It's no coincidence that it's their best album since then, showcasing each at the peak of his power, as John crafts supple, elastic, versatile pop and Taupin's inscrutable wordplay is evocative, even moving."

Elton John - Captain Fantastic & the Brown Dirt Cowboy

Our Shootout Winner from 2009

  (Item #: john_capta_2009)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

This British DJM pressing has TWO INCREDIBLE SIDES -- A++ for the first and A+++ for the second! We finally gathered up enough reasonably clean copies to get this shootout going, which was no mean feat itself. Most of the copies we played were grainy, murky, veiled or lifeless, but this one gave us a Captain Fantastic we could really get into. The sound is lively, dynamic, and tubey magical throughout. The clarity, transparency, and immediacy are all superb.

Caribou  (Item #: john_carib_2015)

Not the most consistent of Elton's albums in the '70s, but the best tracks -- Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me and The Bitch Is Back spring to mind -- are killer, right up there with the best work the man was doing at the time.

This Super Hot Stamper original British DJM pressing has some of the best sound we have ever heard on Caribou. There’s a good reason you've practically never seen this album for sale on our site; in fact there are quite a number of good reasons.

Elton John - Elton John

Our Shootout Winner from 2011

  (Item #: john_elton_2011)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

This original DJM British pressing has a SUPERB Demo Disc Quality side two and a wonderful A++ side one! You could easily play a hundred records from the '70s and not hear one that sounds this good. The richness and sweetness of this side have to be heard to be believed. We would be very surprised if this copy didn't become your favorite Elton John record -- it's an absolute knockout.

As is usually the case for this album and specifically these Brit DJM pressings, the vinyl is a bit noisy -- Mint Minus Minus with constant moderate surface noise under the music.

Elton John - Empty Sky

Our Shootout Winner from 2012

  (Item #: john_empty_2012)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

The undiscovered gem in the Elton John catalog! This original British Import demonstrates just how good a recording this is. The sound is excellent and the music is surprisingly good -- and weird in a fun way! It certainly bears little relation to the middle-of-the-road pop songs Elton's been making since the '80s. These guys were young and figuring out their sound here, and this album takes Elton to some pretty interesting places. A fun debut album that is certainly worth a listen if you're a fan of the classic albums that were soon to follow.

The Earliest Stampers Sound the Best, Right?

  (Item #: john_goodb_myth)

Nope. It’s just another Record Myth.

We had a White Hot stamper listing a while back with these comments featured prominently in the description:

This is BY FAR the best sounding Goodbye Yellow Brick Road to ever hit the site, and BY FAR the best sounding copy we have ever played here at Better Records. And for those of you who think that the early stampers must be the best, note that this killer copy had no side with a stamper under three. How about them apples? As we like to say, screw all that Platonic thinking; we find the empirical approach of playing the records works a whole lot better, thank you very much.

Hey, they really did a good job with this one! We are going to listen to it again at a later date to see if our initial impressions were correct [I guess by now it should be clear that we are never going to do that, sorry!], but it sure sounded good to us when we played it recently during our big GYBR shootout.

I’m guessing no domestic copy can beat it, and certainly no audiophile half-speed mastered pressing can hold a candle to it; those records are pretty awful.

  (Item #: simonnosec_2012)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

This Elektra Butterfly Label LP is ONE OF THE VERY BEST SOUNDING COPIES OF THIS ALBUM I’VE EVER HEARD, with both sides receiving our top grad of A+++! We just finished playing a big old stack of pressings and this copy was clearly the best overall.

It ain't easy to find copies of the album that give you big, rich sound and breathy vocals, but this White Hot Stamper gives you all that and more, taking the sound of the album far beyond any expectations you may have. It's that good.

Listening in Depth

Another in our series of Home Audio Exercises with advice on What to Listen For.

The immensely talented engineer ROBIN GEOFFREY CABLE worked his audio magic on this album. You may recall that he recorded a number of the greatest sounding rock records of all time, Elton John's self-titled second album and Tumbleweed Connection, both in 1970, as well as this album and Nilsson Schmilsson in 1972, with Richard Perry producing.
