White Hot Stamper

Emerson, Lake & Palmer
Trilogy

  (Item #: emerstrilo_1909ex)

Our Price: $349.99

  • With two insanely good Triple Plus (A+++) sides, this UK Island pressing was the best copy we played in our recent shootout
  • From The Beginning has the kind of Tubey Magical liquidity that made it a staple in practically every stereo store I walked into in the '70s
  • An excellent recording by the Prog Engineering Master, Eddie Offord, that really shines on a pressing as good as this one
  • 4 stars: "By 1972, Eddie Offord's recording and producing techniques had reached a peak. He provided a lush, comfy finish to the album that made it particularly suited for living-room listening and the FM airwaves... Every track on this album has been carefully thought, arranged, and performed to perfection..."

Emerson Lake & Palmer - Trilogy

Our Four Plus Shootout Winner from 2008

  (Item #: emerstrilo_2008)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock Hall of Fame.

This British Island Sunray LP has THE BEST SOUND WE’VE EVER HEARD for this album; it ranks right up there with the best sounding copies of the first album, a Top 100 Demo Disc!

We award this copy's side one our very special Four Plus A++++ grade. Side one was so incredible we just had to give it an extra plus. It is off the charts. Side two we awarded our usual AGAIG Triple Plus rating. No other copy in our shootout rated as high on either side as these did.

Emerson Lake & Palmer

Listening in Depth

  (Item #: emersemers_depth)

Presenting another entry in our extensive Listening in Depth series.

The Brit copies may take top honors for side one ("sweetness, openness, tubey magic, correct tonality, presence without aggressiveness, well-defined note-like bass, extended airy highs") but the Hot Stamper Cotillion copies KILL on side two. They really ROCK, with greater dynamic contrasts and seriously prodigious bass, some of the best ever committed to vinyl.

The Brits tend to be a bit too "pretty" sounding. They're too polite for this bombastic music. This music needs the whomp down below and lots of jump factor to work its magic.

Emerson Lake & Palmer

Our Shootout Winner from 2008

  (Item #: emersemers_2008)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock Hall of Fame.

TWO SUPERB SIDES! We just finished a MAJOR shootout for this great album, and this Top Copy is going to make an AMAZING Demo Disc for the Lucky Man who takes it home! If you’ve got the system to play this one loud enough, with the bass power this album demands, you are in for a treat. The organ that opens side two will rattle the foundation of your house if you're not careful. This music really needs that kind of megawatt reproduction to make sense. It's big bombastic prog that wants desperately to rock your world. At moderate levels it just sounds overblown and silly. At loud levels it actually WILL rock your world.

Emerson, Lake and Palmer - Pictures at an Exhibition

Our Shootout Winner from 2009

  (Item #: emerspictu_2009)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

This Minty looking original Island British Import LP has some of the best sound we have ever heard for this album. This copy KILLED a bunch of other Brit imports we played it against. It wasn't even close. This pressing was so much more TRANSPARENT -- you could hear into the crowd in a way that no other copy managed to let you do. When the band started playing the sound was much more clear and present than the other Brit copies we played.

Great live sound thanks to EDDIE OFFORD.

Our Shootout Winner from 2009

  (Item #: emerstarku_2009)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

This British Island Sunray pressing has EXCELLENT A++ SOUND on BOTH SIDES. If you prog rock junkies are looking for your next fix, this killer copy is the hot ticket! Both sides have got it going on; you won’t find this kind of energy, transparency, or presence on most copies out there! This one is full of tubey magic on both sides, yet clean, clear, and open throughout. The transparency is OFF THE CHARTS.

John Lennon - Imagine

MoFi Pressing (Reviewed in the '90s)

  (Item #: lennoimagi_mofi_)

Sonic Grade: B

One of the better MoFi pressings from the 2000's

We haven't played a copy of this record in years, but back in the day we liked it, so let's call it a "B" with the caveat that the older the review, the more likely we are to have changed our minds. At the time we said:

I played this when it came out, and I have to hand it to the new MOFI, they did a great job with this one. It sounds better than I''ve ever heard it, and KILLS the old MoFi vinyl, which is the version we did the shootout with.

John Lennon - Imagine

Our Shootout Winner from 2015

  (Item #: lennoimagi_2015)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

This is the highest rated copy of Imagine to ever hit the site! As crazy as that sounds, it's true -- these are next to impossible to find, they tend to cost big bucks when you do track them down, they're almost always noisy, and they very rarely sound very good. If it wasn't ridiculously difficult to find Hot Stamper pressings of Imagine, it certainly would not have taken us until 2015 to offer one.

John McLaughlin - Extrapolation

Our Shootout Winner from 2013

  (Item #: mclauextra_2013)

INCREDIBLY POWERFUL AND DYNAMIC DEMO QUALITY SOUND THROUGHOUT! If you're looking for a jazz-fusion guitar album that will wake your system up (and show off its best qualities to boot), this is the hot ticket right here. We had been slowly compiling various pressings for a big shootout for ages, and we finally let it rip recently. This was one of the most impressive pressings, earning an A++ on side one and an A+++ on side two. If you're a fan of '70s Miles Davis or the Birds Of Fire album, you probably already know that you need this in your collection!

... That Kind of Money Damn Well Better Buy You Amazing Sound! ...

  (Item #: yes__yesal_letter)

This letter of the week comes from one of our long time customers, Gary, who was blown away by the sound of our Aja, Yes Album and Fragile Hot Stampers. We agreed, noting that it's nearly IMPOSSIBLE for records to sound like the ones we sent him!

Dropping you a line to tell you that these two albums have four of the greatest sounding sides of music I have experienced.

Last week, when the Thursday mailer came out, I happened to be listening to The Yes Album, your hot stamper. I am astounded every time I play that record. I had no choice but to grab your Fragile HS. I went ahead and pulled the trigger on Aja as well, after shooting out the 4 or 5 copies I have.

British Band, British Pressing... Right?

  (Item #: yes__fragi_myth)

Not Really. It’s just another Record Myth.

Some of you may remember that back in the '90s (and even into the 2000s, gulp) we preferred the sound on the British original pressings for the most famous Yes albums, Fragile among them.

There's no way around it, folks: We Was Wrong. While the Brit copies can have some very nice qualities, they just can't compete with the best domestic pressings of Fragile.

Analogue Productions LP Reviewed

  (Item #: yes__fragi_ap)

Sonic Grade: C

The Analogue Productions 180g reissue shown here is mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Grey, two guys I respect, but the results of their latest collaboration leave much to be desired. The overall sound is lean. This is especially noticeable on the too thin-sounding guitars and vocals. Believe me, it's no fun to play a Yes album with thin guitars and vocals.

Presenting another entry in our extensive Listening in Depth series with plenty of advice on What to Listen For (WTLF) as you critically evaluate your copy of Fragile.

EDDIE OFFORD took charge of Yes's engineering with Time and a Word (1970) and we are very lucky that he did. Although his masterpiece is surely ELP's first album, both The Yes Album and Fragile are so well recorded they clearly belong at the top of any list of All Time Great Sounding Rock Albums.

Roundabout Vs. South Side of the Sky

  (Item #: yes__fragi_wtlf)

Another in our series of Home Audio Exercises with specific advice on What to Listen For (WTLF) as you go about critically evaluating your copies of Fragile.

This shootout taught us that track one is not as well recorded as the rest of side one. On copy after copy, and there were well over a dozen, it was the other big track on side one, South Side of the Sky, that had consistently better sound. You really hear it in the choruses, where the voices are so full-bodied, powerful, rich and energetic on that fourth track, and less of all of these qualities on the first.

Rhino 180g Debunked

  (Item #: yes__yesal_debunk)

Sonic Grade: F

A Hall of Shame pressing. The worst version ever? Could be! That notorious hack Ron McMaster strikes again.

Rhino Records has really made a mockery of the analog medium. Rhino bills their releases as pressed on "180 gram High Performance Vinyl." However, if they are using performance to refer to sound quality, we take issue with their use of the word.

Yes, We're Getting Awfully Close To The Edge

Are Your Planets Aligned?

  (Item #: yes__close_planets)

A word of caution: Even our Hottest Stamper copies can sound problematical unless your system is firing on all cylinders. Your electricity has got to be cooking, you've got to be using the right room treatments, and ideally you should be using a demagnetizer such as the Talisman on the record itself, your cables (power, interconnect and speaker) as well as the individual drivers of your speakers.

This is a record that's going to demand a lot from the listener, and we want to make sure that you're up to the challenge. If you don't mind putting in a little hard work, here's a record that will reward you many times over, and probably teach you a thing or two about tweaking your gear in the process.
