INXS
Kick

  (Item #: inxs_kick_1912)

  • INXS's one true Masterpiece comes to the site with two excellent sides, rating Double Plus (A++) grades for sound or close to them - exceptionally quiet vinyl too

  • The Big Rock sound comes courtesy of Chris Thomas' production and Bob Clearmountain's mix

Every track has at least a subtly different feel from what came before it; INXS freely incorporates tense guitar riffs, rock & roll anthems, swing-tinged pop/rock, string-laden balladry, danceable pop-funk, horn-driven '60s soul, '80s R&B, and even a bit of the new wave-ish sound they'd started out with."

Eno - Here Come The Warm Jets

Our Shootout Winning Copy frrom 2007

  (Item #: eno__herec_2007)

This British Island Sunray LP is the copy we've been waiting for! We love this music but we'd never heard a copy of this album that could hold its own sonically with our Hot Stamper copies of Taking Tiger Mountain -- until we played this one.

We hardly ever see enough clean copies of this to do a full shootout, but we know Hot Stamper sound when we hear it and this copy's got it -- on BOTH sides. It's got a wonderfully meaty bottom end that was missing from many of the copies we've played before. Baby's On Fire is super punchy, and Cindy Tells Me has AMAZING bass. The vocals are full-bodied and breathy with lots of texture and wonderful presence. The clarity here is superb -- none of the smearing so common to the domestic pressings.

INXS - Kick

Our Shootout Winner from 2017

  (Item #: inxs_kick_2017)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

For a recording from 1987 there is a surprising amount of Tubey Magical Analog sound to be found here. There is almost always a trace of hardness in the loudest vocal parts; that's where the 1987 recording technology raises its head, but the better copies such as this one keep it to a bare minimum.

The copies that were the richest and had the biggest bottom end, without being smeary or dark from a lack of top tended to do the best in our shootout. The copies that lacked weight or lower midrange fullness were most often rejected; rhythmically driven Funk Rock simply doesn't work without plenty of richness and bass.

Pink Floyd - The Dark Side of the Moon

Expanding Space Itself

  (Item #: pinkfdarks_top_ten)

Recently we played a copy with all the presence, all the richness, all the size and all the energy we ever hoped to hear from a top quality pressing of Dark Side of the Moon. It did it ALL and then some. The raging guitar solos (there are three of them) on Money seemed to somehow expand the system itself, making it bigger and more powerful than I have ever heard. Even our best copies of Blood Sweat and Tears have never managed to create such a huge space with that kind of raw power. This copy broke through all the barriers, taking the system to an entirely new level of sound.

Pink Floyd - The Dark Side of the Moon

Our Shootout Winner from 2012

  (Item #: pinkfdarks_2012)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock Hall of Fame.

This Minty EMI Harvest German Import LP takes this album to a WHOLE NEW LEVEL. Both of these White Hot sides have HUGE, room-filling, hi-definition sound with all the Tubey Magic you could ever hope for. The transparency and the clarity are mind-boggling! Just listen to how clear the clocks are on Time, how breathy the vocals are on Breathe, how textured the synthesizers are and how silky the top end is from the beginning of the album all the way to the end.

Roxy Music - For Your Pleasure

Our Shootout Winner from 2017

  (Item #: roxymforyo_2017)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

This album is a MASTERPIECE of Art Rock, Glam Rock and Bent Rock all rolled into one. Spacious, dynamic, present, with HUGE MEATY BASS and tons of energy, the sound is every bit as good as the music. (At least on this copy it is. That's precisely what Hot Stampers are all about.)

Roxy Music - Siren

Our Shootout Winner from 2016

  (Item #: roxymsiren_2016)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

Siren is one of our favorite Roxy albums, right up there with the first album and well ahead of the commercially appealing Avalon. After reading a rave review in Rolling Stone of the album back in 1975 I took the plunge, bought a copy at my local Tower Records and instantly fell in love with it. As is my wont, I then proceeded to work my way through their earlier catalog, which was quite an adventure.

Roxy Music - Stranded

Our Shootout Winner from 2016

  (Item #: roxymstran_2016)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock Hall of Fame.

Stranded is one of the higher quality recordings by the band, coming in second for sonics only to the first album, which is really saying something considering that the first album is a Top 100 title. The Tubey Magic on the early albums has to be heard to be believed.

The Beatles - The White Album

Listening in Depth

  (Item #: beatlwhite_depth)

Another in our series of Home Audio Exercises with plenty of What to Listen For (WTLF) tips.

It's exceedingly difficult to find audiophile quality sound on The White Album. The Beatles were breaking apart, often recording independently of each other, with their own favorite engineers as enablers, and George Martin nowhere to be found most of the time. They were also experimenting more and more with sound itself, which resulted in wonderful songs and interesting effects. However, these new approaches and added complexity often result in a loss of sonic "purity."

The Pretenders - Pretenders II

Our Shootout Winner from 2017

  (Item #: pretepreteII_2017)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock Hall of Fame and another in the long list of recordings that really comes alive when you Turn Up Your Volume.

This original British pressing has the kind of Tubey Magical Midrange that modern records cannot even BEGIN to reproduce. Folks, that sound is gone and it sure isn't showing signs of coming back. If you love hearing INTO a recording, actually being able to "see" the performers, and feeling as if you are sitting in the studio with the band, this is the record for you.

The Pretenders - The Pretenders

Our Shootout Winner from 2013

  (Item #: preteprete_2013)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

Forget the dubby domestic vinyl, these Brits are the only way to go. And this one is a great deal quieter than most. Most of the copies I bought from English record dealers were just BEAT. They kept telling me they played fine (on their Technics table I'm guessing), but I could not for the life of me replicate their experience for myself here in the states.
