801 - 801 Live

None Rocks Harder

  (Item #: 801__live_2007)

The best Island copies of this album ROCK HARDER than practically any record we've ever played. If you have the system for it, this one will bring a Live Art Rock concert right into your living room!

It's right at the top of the list of my Favorite Albums -- a Desert Island Disc if ever there was one. I stumbled across it more thirty years ago and I've loved it ever since. It all started when a college buddy played me the wildly original Tomorrow Never Knows from the album and asked me to name the tune. Eno's take is so different from The Beatles version that I confess it took me an embarrassingly long while to catch on.

801 Live

It's All About the Bass (Except for that One Time When It Wasn't)

  (Item #: 801__live_listen)

What's especially interesting about this copy is that we went crazy for it even though it did not have the best bass of the copies we played, which, as you will see below, clearly contradicts what we had previously written. We thought that the copies with the best bass had the best everything else too, but that was not what we heard this time around.

THIS copy got the music to work its magic, and it did it with most, but not all, of the bass of the best. Not sure how to explain it. Rules were made to be broken maybe?

Are You a Detail Freak?

At Better Records We Call that Pitfall Number 1

  (Item #: 801__live_detail)

Is that where the music is -- in the details? Brighter ain’t necessarily better; most of the time it’s just brighter.

This album isn't about clarity. It's about the sound of a live Rock and Roll concert. It's about the raw power of one of the most phenomenal rhythm sections to ever be captured in performance.

Brian Eno / David Byrne - My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts

Our Shootout Winner from 2007

  (Item #: enobymylif_2007)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock Hall of Fame.

This QUIET Original Sire LP has EXCELLENT SOUND! We just did a mini-shootout for this fun album, and this copy was the clear winner on both sides. It’s got the kind of deep, meaty, well-defined bass that’s absolutely critical to this music. The various instruments and noises have more room to breathe than on the other copies we played. The overall sound is airy, open, and spacious with excellent clarity. The percussion -- a HUGE part of this album -- sounds Right On The Money. You can really hear the sound of the skins!

David Bowie - Low

Our Shootout Winner from 2011

  (Item #: bowielow_2011)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

[This is an old listing that we ourselves are fairly skeptical of. We present it as more of a historical document than a guide to finding good sound on Low.]

This is the first Hot Stamper copy of Low to ever hit our site, and it's a darn good one -- especially on side one, where all the "pop" songs are found. We just had a huge shootout for this album featuring all the copies we've picked up over the years, and this domestic (!) pressing shocked us by blowing away our Brit copies on side one.

Devo - Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo

Our Shootout Winner from 2013

  (Item #: devo_arewe_2013)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

Let the Devolution begin! This is quite possibly the BEST COPY WE'VE EVER HEARD, and one of a very select group of copies (I can count 'em on one hand) to ever attain White Hot Stamper status here at Better Records. The sound here can be summed up in one word: HUGE! The bass is deep and punchy; the energy level is off the charts; the soundfield has tremendous depth and the music is just flyin' out of the speakers. If you're a fan of this music -- and you should be -- you'll be hard pressed to find a copy that comes close to this one!

Eno - Here Come The Warm Jets

Our Shootout Winning Copy frrom 2007

  (Item #: eno__herec_2007)

This British Island Sunray LP is the copy we've been waiting for! We love this music but we'd never heard a copy of this album that could hold its own sonically with our Hot Stamper copies of Taking Tiger Mountain -- until we played this one.

We hardly ever see enough clean copies of this to do a full shootout, but we know Hot Stamper sound when we hear it and this copy's got it -- on BOTH sides. It's got a wonderfully meaty bottom end that was missing from many of the copies we've played before. Baby's On Fire is super punchy, and Cindy Tells Me has AMAZING bass. The vocals are full-bodied and breathy with lots of texture and wonderful presence. The clarity here is superb -- none of the smearing so common to the domestic pressings.

Our First Shootout Winner, 2008

  (Item #: eno__takin_2008)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock Hall of Fame and another in the long list of recordings that really comes alive when you Turn Up Your Volume.

This British Sunray original pressing takes the sound to a level BEYOND all others. This copy has deep, punchy bass that exceeded my wildest expectations. I've been playing this record for thirty years and I've never heard a bottom end like this before. Side one here rates an A+++ -- Master Tape Sound, As Good As It Gets (AGAIG).

Eno - Taking Tiger Mountain by Strategy

Listening in Depth

  (Item #: eno__takin_listen)

Presenting another entry in our extensive Listening in Depth series.

This album is all about sound, pure sound itself if you will: the sound of the instruments, their textures, and the textures of the soundscape Eno has created for them.

With the subtle harmonics of Eno's treated sounds captured onto vinyl intact, the magic of the experience far exceeds just another batch of catchy songs with clever arrangements. It truly becomes an immersive experience; sounds you've never heard in quite that way draw you into their world, each sound more interesting than the next.

This is Eno's Masterpiece as well as a Desert Island Disc for yours truly. On the right pressing this is a Twisted Pop Demo Disc like nothing you have ever heard. Genesis - The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway

Our Shootout Winner from 2012

  (Item #: geneslambl_2012)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

This Charisma double LP was the uncontested winner of our shootout, earning a whopping 12 PLUSES across all four sides! In fact, this is BY FAR the best we've ever heard this album sound. After our last shootout -- in which no side earned a top grade -- we had almost given up hope of finding a true White Hot Stamper copy. Well, folks, our perseverance has finally paid off and this copy is the proof! When you find a killer pressing this complex, theatrical music really WORKS.

Rhett Davies Truly Awesome Engineering Masterpiece

  (Item #: manzadiamo_masterpiece)

You may recall reading this bit about RHETT DAVIES engineering on Dire Straits' debut:

"...until something better comes along, THIS IS HIS MASTERPIECE. It has to be one of the best sounding rock records ever made, with Tubey Magic mids, prodigious bass, transparency and freedom from hi-fi-ishness and distortion like few rock recordings you have ever heard."

Well, something better has now come along, and it's called Diamond Head.

Roxy Music - Roxy Music

Our Shootout Winner from 2011

  (Item #: roxymroxym_2011)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock Hall of Fame.

The legendary first Roxy Music album returns to the site in tip top White Hot Stamper form, boasting no less than an incredible A+++ White Hot Side Two coupled with a superb A++ Super Hot Side One! Folks, it doesn't get much better than this!

In considering both music and sound, this is arguably the best record the band ever made. Siren, Avalon and Country Life are all musically sublime, but the first album has the kind of dynamic, energetic, POWERFUL sound that their other records simply never show us. And we've played them by the dozens, so there's a pretty good chance we will never find copies with the abundant richness and power we found here.

A Heavy Vinyl Winner!

  (Item #: roxymroxym_scorecard)

Sonic Grade: B-

Hey, this is a good sounding pressing! I had to pull out my best imports to beat it, which they did handily of course, but the typical audiophile trying to find a pressing superior to this one will have to do a fair bit of homework in order to succeed. We had multiple copies of Islands, Polydors, Atcos, Reprises and one copy of the Heavy Vinyl import I used to like. This pressing trounced most of them, and it’s cheap.

Talking Heads - Fear of Music

Our First White Hot Stamper - 2015

  (Item #: talkifearo_2015)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock Hall of Fame.

The Talking Heads and producer Brian Eno certainly weren't shy about adding multiple layers of effects and processing, and the average pressing of this record turns some of the more complicated parts into grainy mush. The material here is darker than the songs on the first two albums, so a copy that lacks any extension up top will have trouble bringing the music to life. The texture of Eno's synthesizers gives the music depth and character, and a copy with smear issues forsakes much of that. It takes a special pressing to make this music really work, but this one really gets it right.

THE BEST SIDE ONE WE'VE EVER HEARD -- BAR NONE! I will stop short of awarding it more than three pluses, because the recording certainly has its share of limitations, but never before have we heard these songs sound so BIG, BOLD and ALIVE! What to Listen For

  (Item #: talkimores_wtlf)

Another in our series of Home Audio Exercises with advice on What to Listen For (WTLF) as you critically evaluate your copy of the album.

With Our Love turned out to be one of our favorite tests for side one. The picking of the rhythmic guitar in the intro told us just about everything we needed to know about smear, veiling and resolution. On most copies the instrument is simply blurry, the notes mashed together. When you've got a copy with its transients intact, resolving properly and clearly right there in front of you, you have the makings of a Hot Stamper side one.

HOT STAMPERS DISCOVERED AT LAST! We’ve been trying to find a great sounding copy of this album forever, and this is the week we finally succeeded. It takes an exceptional pressing to get all the elements correct -- the funky bottom end; the processed, multi-tracked vocals; the Brian Eno production weirdness and so on.

U2 - The Joshua Tree

Our Shootout Winner from 2009

  (Item #: u2___joshu_2009)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock Hall of Fame.

This domestic Island LP has SURPRISINGLY GOOD SOUND on side one. The soundstage is huge, and the overall quality of the recording is BIG and BOLD. Most copies of this album are either thin, shrill and agressive -- like most U2 albums -- or thick and veiled. This one is actually smooth and fairly natural sounding, with the added benefit of some deep punchy bass.

Super Hot Stampers on side one, giving you excellent sound for the big hit "Pride (In The Name Of Love)", backed with an A+ side two! We had a big stack of these to compare and not too many of them were in a league with this one, particularly on the first side. Most copies are too dark and murky to really come to life, but this one is cleaner, clearer and more open throughout.
