White Hot Stamper

Joe Walsh
But Seriously, Folks...

  (Item #: walshbutse_2007)

Our Price: $349.99

  • This solo effort boasts Shootout Winning Triple Plus (A+++) sound or close to it on both sides - exceptionally quiet vinyl too
  • A hard album to find with sound like this AND quiet surfaces, but here one is
  • We guarantee there is dramatically more richness, fullness and presence on this copy than others you've heard, and that's especially true for whatever godawful Heavy Vinyl pressing is currently being foisted on an undiscerning record buying public
  • 4 1/2 stars: "As far as studio albums go, But Seriously Folks is Joe Walsh's most insightful and melodic... The album's introspective outlook glides through rejuvenation ('Tomorrow,' 'Over and Over'), recapturing the simple pleasures of the past ('Indian Summer'), mid-career indecision, and a melancholy instrumental."

Pharoah Sanders
Thembi

  • 4 stars: "Recorded with two different ensembles, Thembi was a departure from the slowly developing, side-long, mantra-like grooves Pharoah Sanders had been pursuing for most of his solo career... it's rare to have this many different sides of Sanders coexisting in one place, and that's what makes the album such an interesting listen."

Bill Szymczyk

On Recording the Drums and Vocals for Hotel California

  (Item #: eaglehotel_drum_2015)

Excerpted from an article by Dan Daley at Sound on Sound.

Eagles records were a benchmark for drum sounds in their time. Bill Szymczyk says he and Henley invested a lot of time experimenting with microphone choices and placements, but that most of the time they reverted to fairly common configurations. There was a lot of flavor-of-the-week with microphones back then, he says. But it would usually come back to a Shure 57 on the top of the snare, either U67 or 87s as overheads, sometimes AKG 414s.

Our Shootout Winner from 2011

  (Item #: eaglehotel_2011)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

TWO SUPERB SIDES -- super transparent, super hi-rez, with tons of energy and tubey magic! We just finished a mega-shootout for this title, dropping the needle on more than a dozen copies, and this bad boy earned Best In Show. Side two earned our top A+++ grade while side one was just half a plus behind. Most copies out there won't come even close to this one on EITHER side.

Rockin' Out to Victim of Love

  (Item #: eaglehotel_wtlf)

Victim of Love is yet another one of our favorite tracks that really comes alive when you Turn Up Your Volume.

It's the sound of this five piece tearing it up LIVE IN THE STUDIO. It's also the track where the DCC just falls apart for us. Where did the rock and roll energy go? The DCC makes it sound like the band just doesn't care, which was certainly not our experience when were playing any of the killer Hot Stampers we came across. Just the reverse was true; we had them turned up full blast and they ROCKED.

TWO STUNNING SIDES on this British SYL pressing. You Never Cry Like A Lover and The Best Of My Love have SUPERB Glyn Johns Demo Disc Sound. The LIFE and ENERGY of this copy are going to knock you out of your seat! Most copies left us with a headache, but this one had us begging for more!

The Typical Domestic Pressing Sucks, and Here's Why

  (Item #: eagleonthe_polarity)

This is one of the pressings we’ve discovered with Reversed Polarity on some songs.

The domestic copies of On The Border have many tracks in reversed absolute phase, including and especially Midnight Flyer, a lifelong favorite of mine. The front and center banjo will positively tear your head off; it's bright, sour, shrill, aggressive and full of distortion. Don't look at me -- that's what reverse phase sounds like!

Soaring Guitar Solos and Huge Choruses

  (Item #: eagleoneof_wtlf)

What to Listen For you ask?

That's easy: Soaring Guitar Solos and Huge Choruses.

If you have an exceptionally good sounding copy of the album, One Of These Nights is the kind of record that can really come alive when you Turn Up Your Volume.

Our 4 Plus Shootout Winner from 2016

  (Item #: eagleoneof_2017)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

This 2-pack contains the best side one we've ever heard! The sound is bigger, richer, tubier and livelier than we even thought possible. Side one was so amazing, such an obvious step up over every side of every other copy, we felt it deserved to be awarded our Four Plus (A++++) grade.

Eagles - The Long Run

Our Shootout Winner from 2009

  (Item #: eaglelongr_2009)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock Hall of Fame and another in the long list of recordings that really comes alive when you Turn Up Your Volume.

This copy had sound we never would have expected to hear on this record. Believe me, not too many sound like this one! Most copies have a smeary, veiled, stuck-in-the-speaker quality that makes for some painful listening. Cardboard drums. Non-existent ambience. No energy. The average copy of this album just sits on the turntable with nothing to say.

What to Listen For

  (Item #: eaglelongr_wtlf)

Another in our series of Home Audio Exercises with advice on What to Listen For (WTLF) as you critically evaluate your copy of The Long Run on side one.

Want to know if you have a good side one on your copy? Here's an easy test. Timothy B Schmit's vocal on I Can't Tell You Why rarely sounds right. Most of the time he's muffled, pretty far back in the soundstage, and the booth he's in has practically no ambience. On the good copies he's not exactly jumping out of the speakers, but he's clear, focussed, and his voice is breathy and full of emotional subtleties that make the song the heartbreaking powerhouse it is.

Joe Walsh - But Seriously, Folks...

Our Shootout Winner from 2015

  (Item #: walshbutse_2015)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

Triple Plus sound, a rarity for this really fun album! Most copies have a tendency to be gritty, thin, and/or edgy -- a quality you may recognize from the typical Eagles pressing -- but this one is rich, full and smooth in all the right ways.

Life's Been Good is the big hit here, and it sounds excellent, but there are plenty of other great songs here. It's one of the more solid rock albums from 1978 to hit our table in a while. Check out the Allmusic review linked above, they rave about the album (4 1/2 stars) and even compare it to Pet Sounds!

Our Shootout Winner from 2016

  (Item #: walshsowha_2016)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

Welcome to the Club and a remake of Turn to Stone are the big hits on the album. Bill Szymczyk produced and engineered, and most of the Eagles play on Joe's third solo album, from 1974.

Joe Walsh - The Smoker You Drink, The Player You Get

Our Shootout Winner from 2010

  (Item #: walshsmoke_2010)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

MASTER TAPE SOUND on side one of 1973 classic, an album the All Music Guide calls "a superb album by anyone's standards". We had no idea this album could sound so good until we stumbled upon a clean copy recently a threw it on the table. We couldn't believe how rich and punchy it sounded, after hearing dozens of dry, thin, lifeless copies over the years.
