Al Stewart - Year Of The Cat

Our Shootout Winner from 2009

  (Item #: stewayearo_2009)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

For the first time on our site, TRIPLE PLUS MASTER TAPE SOUND ON BOTH SIDES! We play stacks of copies of this one a few times every year, but I don’t recall ever hearing one that sounded so correct from the first song to the last.

Let me tell you -- when this album sounds as bad as most copies do, the music just plain does not work. So many copies add a nasty layer of grit to the vocals, and the effect is positively painful. This copy shows you a Year Of The Cat that is just not available on the typical copy, and certainly not on the MoFi pressing either.

Al Stewart - Year Of The Cat

MoFi Debunked

  (Item #: stewayearo_mofi)

Sonic Grade: D to B-

If you own the typical MoFi version of this album you happen to own one of the All Time Mastering Disasters of the modern era. Ridiculously boosted at both ends, their version is all but unlistenable on a high end stereo.

Some copies are worse than others, so we are conservatively giving MoFi's pressing a sonic grade of D. We've played some in the past that clearly deserved an F (F as in Failing), but we also once played one that sounded pretty good, which we describe below. If you've played half a dozen MoFi copies and plucked out the best one, yours might be good too. If you haven't heard a bunch, chances are slim that yours is any better than awful.

MoFi Debunked

  (Item #: parsoirobo_debunk)

Sonic Grade: MoFi Regular LP: F / UHQR: D

Hall of Shame pressings and two more MoFi Half-Speed Mastered Audiophile LPs debunked.

The MoFi is a textbook example of their ridiculous affinity for boosted top end, not to mention the extra kick they put in the kick drum, great for mid-fi but a serious distraction on a high end system with low end.

Ambrosia - Ambrosia

An Album We Are Clearly Obsessed With

  (Item #: ambroambro_obsess)

AMBROSIA is an album we admit to being obsessed with -- just look at the number of commentaries we've written about it. It's also part of our extensive Listening in Depth series. There is no question that this band, their producers and their engineers sweated every detail of this remarkable recording. They went the distance. In the end they brought in Alan Parsons to mix it, and Doug Sax to master it. The result is a masterpiece, an album that stands above all others.

Our Shootout Winner from 2010

  (Item #: ambroambro_2010)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock Hall of Fame and another in the long list of recordings that really comes alive when you Turn Up Your Volume.

Here's another INSANELY GOOD pressing of my all-time favorite album, which is every bit as good sonically as it is musically! Side two in particular (A+++, As Good As It Gets!) has DEMO DISC quality sound with the kind of SONIC ENERGY that not one out of a hundred titles can lay claim to.

Ambrosia - Somewhere I've Never Travelled

Our Shootout Winner from 2012

  (Item #: ambrosomew_2012)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

This SUPERB WHITE HOT STAMPER copy is our overall winner from the recent huge Hot Stamper shootout we did for Ambrosia’s second -- and second best -- album. Friends, it’s been a long time coming but, judging by this copy and the others which fared well, it was worth it. We LOVE this music.

Ambrosia is one of the few groups that has mastered the technique of being both far-out galactic in scope of vision and mainstream AM commercial in execution... There is an unusual dreamlike quality that pervades its work. The songs seem to be reaching the listener direct from some strange and beautiful realm of the unconscious. It is an experience rare in popular music today, or at any time.

"Press on" - Sage Advice from Calvin Coolidge

  (Item #: ambrosomew_mistake_2014)

“Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful people with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan "press on" has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race.”

Calvin Coolidge

If you substitute "finding Hot Stamper pressings" for the words "the human race" you will surely appreciate the point of this commentary.

Are All MoFis Created Equal?

A Pair of Pink Floyd LPs Proved They Aren’t

  (Item #: pinkfdarks_mofi_2016)

Many audiophiles are still under the misapprehension that Mobile Fidelity, with their strict "quality control", managed to eliminate pressing variations of the kind we discuss endlessly on the site.

Such is simply not the case, and it's child's play to demonstrate how false this way of thinking is, assuming you have these four things: good cleaning fluids and a machine, multiple copies of the same record, a reasonably revealing stereo, and two working ears. With all four the reality of pressing variations for ALL pressings is both obvious and incontrovertible.

Paul McCartney & Wings - Wild Life

Our Shootout Winner from 2010

  (Item #: mccarwildl_2010)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock Hall of Fame.

This Apple UK Import LP has TWO outstanding sides! We were not all that familiar with the album going into this shootout, but after spending the day listening to copies like these we found ourselves LOVING IT!

Let's face it: finding good sounding McCartney records with the exception of the first album is practically impossible. From Ram on it's slim pickings, even on import. Most of those later albums sound like cassettes; they're as dead as the proverbial doornail. They bore us to tears.

Pink Floyd - Atom Heart Mother

Our Shootout Winner from 2013

  (Item #: pinkfatomh_2013)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

This is an album that almost never sounds good. We've spent a ton of money over the years chasing British originals and various other pressings looking for that Pink Floyd magic, but most copies were terribly disappointing sonically. This was the best copy we've heard in many years -- richer, bigger sounding and more solid than everything else we were able to put against it. It's far from a Demo Disc but if you like this music I don't think you can find better sound for it.

Pink Floyd - The Dark Side of the Moon

Expanding Space Itself

  (Item #: pinkfdarks_top_ten)

Recently we played a copy with all the presence, all the richness, all the size and all the energy we ever hoped to hear from a top quality pressing of Dark Side of the Moon. It did it ALL and then some. The raging guitar solos (there are three of them) on Money seemed to somehow expand the system itself, making it bigger and more powerful than I have ever heard. Even our best copies of Blood Sweat and Tears have never managed to create such a huge space with that kind of raw power. This copy broke through all the barriers, taking the system to an entirely new level of sound.

Both of these White Hot sides have HUGE, room-filling, hi-definition sound with all the Tubey Magic you could ever hope for. The transparency and the clarity are mind-boggling! MoFi Reviewed

  (Item #: pinkfdarks_mofi_debunk)

Sonic Grade: D- to B+ (depending)

Now that we’ve had a chance to hear scores of the best import pressings of Dark Side, we know -- better than anyone, if I can be so bold -- just how good that record can sound. No MoFi is ever going to compete with one our our White Hot Stamper pressings -- they have energy and rock power that is nothing less than astonishing.

Playing so many MoFi copies this time around made one thing very clear: the average MoFi pressing of Dark Side is really a piece of junk. So COMPRESSED, so THIN, so PHONY in the upper midrange and BOOSTED on the top end. The typical MoFi is as artificial sounding as the average store bought CD. (Or phony audiophile recording by the likes of Chesky or Audioquest.)

The Alan Parsons Project - Eye In The Sky

Our Shootout Winner from 2011

  (Item #: parsoeyein_2011)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

TWO TOP-NOTCH A+++ SIDES and QUIET VINYL on this Arista two-pack pressing, the first Alan Parsons Project White Hot Stamper to hit the site! Alan Parsons is the engineering guru behind Dark Side Of The Moon, Year Of The Cat and Ambrosia's debut, among many others, so suffice it to say the man knows a thing or two about audiophile-quality recording techniques. That talent is on full display here, with two sides that give you the kind of sound you want for this music -- big and lively with excellent presence and real weight to the bottom.

For the first time ever, we've found Hot Stamper versions of I Robot! No copy in our shootout fared better than this one, which earned an A+++ on side one, an A++ on side two and played pretty quietly throughout. If you're a fan of this album who has been playing a typical copy, or -- even worse -- one of the MoFi versions, you are sure to be very impressed with the kind of sound this White Hot Stamper copy delivers.

The Alan Parsons Project - Tales of Mystery & Imagination

Our Shootout Winner from 2015

  (Item #: parsotales_2015)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

Alan Parsons' concept album based on the stories of Edgar Allen Poe was a TAS Super Disc for a while back in the day, and one can easily see why. The sound on the better pressings is big, solid and full-bodied with amazing resolving power and dynamics.

The best copies usually have exceptionally extended top ends. The best top ends are difficult to come by but they sure make a difference in the sound, revealing three-dimensional space that most copies do no better than to hint at.

Listening in Depth

  (Item #: beatlabbey_depth)

Another in our series of Home Audio Exercises with advice on What to Listen For (WTLF) as you critically evaluate your copy of Abbey Road.

Those of you who follow the site (or do your own shootouts) know that it’s much tougher to find great copies of Abbey Road than it is for MMT or Please Please Me. Most of the copies we’ve played just aren’t good enough to put on the site. For whatever reasons -- probably because this recording is so complicated and required so many tracks -- Abbey Road is arguably the toughest nut to crack in the Beatles' catalog.

The Beatles - Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Heart Club Band

Our Shootout Winner from 2005

  (Item #: beatlsgtpe_2005)

Drumroll please... FREAKISHLY GOOD SOUND ON BOTH QUIET SIDES! This White Hot Sgt. Pepper’s is absolutely stunning with huge amounts of LIFE, ENERGY, PRESENCE, and IMMEDIACY! The huge soundfield will fill up your living room -- and then some!

Side One is a TUBEY MAGICAL MONSTER! We rate the first two tracks an A++ because the bass is a bit more bloated than we would like. But in true champion form, the bass tightens up during "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds" to earn its THIRD PLUS and to show the world what tonal balance sounds like. The top end is silky and delicate with lots of extension. The vocals here are virtually strain free, which is a miraculous feat for any Beatles album.
