David Bowie - Young Americans

Listening in Depth

  (Item #: bowieyoung_depth)

Presenting another entry in our extensive Listening in Depth series.

This is one of my favorite Bowie albums. Nobody seems to care about it anymore. They dismiss it as disco junk, but it actually has some of his best music on it. I especially like the song Win. David Sanborn's saxophone sounds like it's coming from 60 feet behind Bowie, a nice effect.

Earth, Wind & Fire - Gratitude

  (Item #: earthgrati_2010)

OFF THE CHARTS SOUND on three out of four sides! Make no mistake: This is BY FAR the best copy of Gratitude we have ever played. No other copy in our shootout was the equal of this bad boy. This copy showed us a Gratitude we had no idea existed. Every once in a while you run across a record that has both sides mastered as good as they can be mastered, and this is very nearly one of those times -- for this double album only one side fell short out of four, and that side still rated a very respectable A+ to A++. That's ten and a half pluses all told. Nice job, Mastering Lab. You did Earth Wind and Fire proud.

John Klemmer - Touch

Our Shootout Winner from 2010

  (Item #: klemmtouch_2010)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Jazz Hall of Fame.

This Super Hot Stamper copy of Touch is one of the best sounding records Mobile Fidelity ever made, and the ONLY record of theirs I know of that can't be beat by a standard real-time mastered pressing.

We’re talking DEMO DISC QUALITY SOUND here. The spaciousness of the studio and the three-dimensional placement of the myriad percussion instruments and bells within its walls make this something of an audiophile spectacular of a different kind -- dreamy and intensely emotional.

Our Shootout Winner from 2008

  (Item #: amerihisto_2008)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

THE BIG SOUND on both sides lets this Greatest Hits compilation hold its own against the originals. Side One has amazing CLARITY and PRESENCE, which is especially noticeable on the vocals. Side Two has plenty of bottom end that drives these songs with energy and life. Listen for the bells on 'Tin Man'; they have the correct transients and harmonics. You never quite get back all of the tubey magic of the originals, but the detail and richness are enough to make you fall in love with this high quality George Martin (re) production.

ZZ Top - Fandango

Warners Heavy Vinyl Reviewed

  (Item #: zztopfanda_warners)

Sonic Grade: C

Warner Brothers remastered Fandango in 2008, so we took some domestic pressings and put them up against their Heavy Vinyl LP. The results were mixed; most of our originals pressings were lackluster, many were noisy, and we just weren't hearing anything with the sound we thought deserved to be called a Hot Stamper.

We shelved the project for another day. In the interim we kept buying domestic pressings -- originals and reissues -- in the hopes that something good would come our way.

MoFi Reviewed

  (Item #: fleetfleet_mofi)

Sonic Grade: B

Another MoFi LP reviewed, and this one is actually pretty good.

The Mobile Fidelity pressing of this album can actually sound quite good (if you get hold of a decent copy that is). Audio perfection it ain't, but all in all it's a very enjoyable record. Its strengths are many and its faults are few. Let's give credit where credit is due; the MoFi is rich, transparent, sweet, and natural, and you won't hear us saying that about very many MoFi pressings.

The best copy to ever hit the site! It ain't easy to find clean British pressings of this one, which is why it's taken us so long to get a copy like this up on the site. We played a good sized stack of these recently and only a couple did the job well enough to be considered Hot Stampers. This one is a big step up, with way less of the thick / murky / veiled sound that plagues many copies.

This album has the real Country Sound, with plenty of top players sitting in on these sessions, musicians who know country music as well as anyone alive. The legendary guitarist for Elvis (and half the stars of Nashville), James Burton, lends a hand on Electric and Dobro. On vocals and guitar Herb Pederson, who still plays locally. (Together with Chris Hillman they put on a great show of old Country and Honky Tonk favorites. If they come to your town check them out.) Ricky Skaggs on fiddle, Billy Payne on piano, Bernie Leadon on banjo -- no doubt a good time was had by all in the studio,,,

This Columbia Red Label pressing was a MAJOR step up just about everything we could throw at it in a recent shootout, with side one earning an A++ grade and side two coming out even better! If you enjoy Herbie's funky work in the '70s (think Head Hunters, natch) then you're going to love hearing this music really come to life on a Super Hot Stamper copy. TWO GREAT TRIPLE PLUS SIDES on this original Reprise pressing! This is one of those somewhat controversial posthumous Hendrix albums, but it's hard to argue with the quality of the best tracks on here, like the great Message To Love. I'm not going to go out on a limb and say this is a must-own album, but Hendrix fans will certainly find much to like here. We played a big stack of copies and most of them weren't worth our time; a copy like this one lets you appreciate Jimi's craft without mediocre sound getting in the way.

MoFi Debunked

Sonic Grade: F

A Hall of Shame pressing and another MoFi LP debunked.

That weird boost around 10k that Stan Ricker liked to add to practically every record he mastered wreaks havoc on the sound of Tony Bennett's voice. I would be very surprised if the current in-print CD doesn't sound more tonally natural, and for us audiophile record lovers - not lovers of audiophile records, but guys who love records with audiophile sound - that's simply another nail in the coffin for one of the most laughably inept remastering labels in the history of that sad enterprise.

And to think I used to swear by this pressing -- specifically the 2000 Yen reissue, not the 1500 Yen original -- another example of just how Wrong you can be.

We happily admit to our mistakes because we know that all this audio stuff and especially the search for Hot Stampers is a matter of trial and error. We do the trials; that’s how we avoid the kinds of errors most audiophiles and audiophile record dealers make when it comes to finding the best sounding records. Another MoFi LP reviewed.

This is an IMMACULATE Mobile Fidelity LP with Virtually No Sign Of Play (VNSOP) and EXCELLENT SOUND. I'm surprised how good this copy is. The mids and highs are pretty close to Right On The Money (ROTM). The bass is not as deep and well defined as it should be, but that's the fault of Half-Speed mastering, not MOFI. This is a shootout we'd been trying to do for years, but the copies we'd been playing off and on hadn't been especially cooperative, and onto the back burner our plans would go. Maybe next year...

A bit of background: Both his first solo album and this, his fourth, were recorded by the well-known engineer Chris Kimsey, who famously worked with the Stones and others too numerous to mention. To say that the sound of his albums varies considerably would be the understatement of the year. The first album (British only, fyi) is rich, sweet, and Tubey Magical as practically anything you've ever heard (as well as overly tube compressed, its biggest fault).

And side one was WHITE HOT. We certainly didn't expect to hear sound like that on a 1975 compilation of classic Stones hits such as this; most Stones compilations are awful sounding in our experience. Played Hot Rocks lately?

But these tracks have the potential to be taken from something very close to the real master tapes, a subject we discuss in one of our dirty little secret commentaries.

This is a Super Hot Stamper 2 Pack, with one side of each record earning a grade of A++. The reason it takes two separate records to make one excellent sounding album is simple enough: most pressings of this album are just plain AWFUL. Finding a copy with even one good side is difficult, and practically none of the sides we played earned our top grade, so that ought to tell you something right there. I would have to say that this album, when heard on the best Hot Stamper pressings, would rank up at the top of the All Time Great Male Vocal Recordings. If you like sophisticated vocal jazz I don’t think you can do much better than this record, especially when it sounds like this. Tony Bennett’s voice sounds wonderfully rich, BREATHY, and above all REAL.

Triple Plus (A+++) on side one and nearly that on side two (A++ to A+++) make this the best copy to ever hit the site. The sound is HUGE with WHOMP like nothing you have ever heard on this album - finally, the code has been cracked.

Linda Ronstadt - Prisoner In Disguise

Our Shootout Winner from 2010

  (Item #: ronstpriso_2010)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

Val Garay (JT, Simple Dreams) does it again! Both sides of this Asylum pressing have SUPERB SOUND, and side one I would go so far as to say has MASTER TAPE SOUND.

Side one is simply OFF THE CHARTS. It’s super-transparent; the clarity is amazing, and from the moment the needle hits the groove you hear the kind of stunning immediacy that brings Linda right INTO your listening room! This is EXACTLY the kind of sound a pop record is supposed to have. This copy gives it to you big time, on both sides.

Mahavishnu Orchestra - Visions of the Emerald Beyond

Our Shootout Winner from 2014

  (Item #: mahavvisio_2014)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Jazz Hall of Fame.

On the first track of side one we will happily state for the record: no record rocks harder. When you hear Ponty's double-tracked violins explode out of each speaker on the first track you will know what we mean when we say this record is as big and as bold a recording statement as any you have ever heard.

It's yet another triumph from one of our favorite engineers, KEN SCOTT.

Steely Dan - Katy Lied

MoFi Debunked

  (Item #: steelkatyl_debunk)

Sonic Grade: F

A Hall of Shame pressing and another MoFi LP debunked.

By the time I was avidly collecting Mobile Fidelity records in the late '70s this title had already gone out of print, one of the first to do so. My guess is that even the cloth-eared audiophiles at MoFi knew when they had a turkey on their hands and mercilessly put this one out to pasture. Yes, the sound is so bad that even MoFi could hear it.

Compressed and lifeless as the screen speakers so popular at the time, it's hard to imagine any version sounding worse than this one.
