  • This superb pressing of Feel Like Makin' Love boasts outstanding Double Plus (A++) sound or BETTER throughout

And while she would return to the stage and studio, Flack never quite hit the heights of this and the handful of other MOR soul releases from the first half of the decade... Feel Like Making Love will still please the singer's dedicated fans."

  • 5 stars: "Queen were straining at the boundaries of hard rock and heavy metal on Sheer Heart Attack, but they broke down all the barricades on A Night at the Opera, a self-consciously ridiculous and overblown hard rock masterpiece... But the appeal of A Night at the Opera is in its detailed, meticulous productions. It's prog rock with a sense of humor as well as dynamics, and Queen never bettered their approach anywhere else."

The Doobie Brothers - Stampede

  (Item #: doobistamp_2015_)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

The average copy of this album is compressed and congested, recessed and veiled, grainy and thin; in other words, it sounds like an old Doobie Brothers album. It takes a copy like this to show you just how good the Master Tape must really be. Most copies don't even hint at the sound you will hear on this record. The big sound on both sides lets this Greatest Hits compilation hold its own against the originals. Side One has amazing CLARITY and PRESENCE, which is especially noticeable on the vocals. Eric Clapton - E.C. Was Here

Our Shootout Winner from 2019

  (Item #: claptecwas_2019)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock Hall of Fame.

Check out Clapton's superb arrangements and performances of two of the best songs from his short-lived Blind Faith period: Presence of the Lord and Can't Find My Way Home. They're two of the highpoints on an album filled with good material that does not seem to get the credit it is due. I bought this album when it came out in 1975 and never really got into it. Of course I had an inferior domestic pressing and a stereo that couldn't have done the album justice anyway, but in my defense I would have to say that there really wasn't any such stereo system on the face of the earth; we still had a long way to go.

We've been going through a number of Rita's albums lately, and with It's Only Love we feel we've discovered the best sounding of them all, and as luck would have it, it also happens to contain her best music. Fans of Linda Ronstadt's '70s music are going to find a lot of Tubey Magical sound to like here - this is a simply wonderful example of the kind of album that makes record collecting fun. • Allmusic 4 Stars: "The Thompsons, from the opening Irish fiddle derivation of a Chuck Berry riff, through Linda's exquisite performance of "A Heart Needs a Home," to their cover of Mike Waterson's "Mole in a Hole" which closes the record, once again create a timeless amalgam of folk and rock..."

Rachmaninoff / Three Symphonies / Waart

Reviewed in 2005

  (Item #: rachmthree_2005)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Orchestral Music Hall of Fame.

Three Minty looking Philips Import LPs with EXCELLENT SOUND!

The sound is dark and rich. You may prefer it as I do to the famous Previn performances on EMI, which have that mid-hall, vague ’70s EMI sound. It never appealed to me.

The performances are excellent as well. The second symphony belongs in any serious collection and you get a very good one in this box set. This set includes Rachmaninoff's Symphonies 1-3 and 'The Rock,' Op. 7.

David Bowie - Young Americans

Listening in Depth

  (Item #: bowieyoung_depth)

Presenting another entry in our extensive Listening in Depth series.

This is one of my favorite Bowie albums. Nobody seems to care about it anymore. They dismiss it as disco junk, but it actually has some of his best music on it. I especially like the song Win. David Sanborn's saxophone sounds like it's coming from 60 feet behind Bowie, a nice effect.

Al Green - Greatest Hits

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

This Hi LP sounds JUST RIGHT to me. There aren’t enough copies floating around for me to shootout. I no longer have the DCC LP; I sold my test pressing long ago. I remember it sounded a bit thick, but that was on a very different stereo than the one I own today. It has been my experience that when I hear a really dead-on early pressing of a record like this, the 180g version will tend to come up short. If you own the DCC pressing, I guarantee this copy is better or your money back.

Earth, Wind & Fire - Gratitude

Our Shootout Winner from 2010

  (Item #: earthgrati_2010)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

OFF THE CHARTS SOUND on three out of four sides! Make no mistake: This is BY FAR the best copy of Gratitude we have ever played. No other copy in our shootout was the equal of this bad boy. This copy showed us a Gratitude we had no idea existed. Every once in a while you run across a record that has both sides mastered as good as they can be mastered, and this is very nearly one of those times -- for this double album only one side fell short out of four. That's ten and a half pluses all told. Nice job, Mastering Lab. You did Earth Wind and Fire proud.

Grover Washington - Mister Magic

Our Shootout Winner from 2014

  (Item #: washimiste_2014)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Jazz Hall of Fame.

The typical pressing is murky, overly smooth and lacks energy. Many copies also suffer from serious congestion and veiling. No such problems here! You get tons of space and energy, along with balanced tonality and great presence.

A 4 1/2 star album in the All Music Guide. Washington is backed here by excellent players including Bob James, Phil Upchurch, Harvey Mason, Ralph MacDonald, Eric Gale and many more.

If you want to know why Gene Ammons is considered one of the greats, skip the jam that starts out side one and go right to the ballad Alone Again (Naturally). Nobody played with more emotion than Gene Ammons.

Paul Desmond - Pure Desmond

  (Item #: desmopured_2011)

WONDERFULLY RELAXED AND MUSICAL SOUND on this CTI pressing. We auditioned a large stack of copies and could not find a side two any better than this. The sax is breathy, the guitar sounds amazing, and the bass is KILLER. I doubt there's another copy out there with more energy, richness or fullness than this one.

This is one of R&L Thompson’s best albums, their second, following the luminous I Want to See the Bright Lights Shine from a year earlier. Rich and full-bodied, with big bass and gobs of studio ambience, this is the way this music was meant to be heard.

John Klemmer - Touch

Our Shootout Winner from 2010

  (Item #: klemmtouch_2010)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Jazz Hall of Fame.

This Super Hot Stamper copy of Touch is one of the best sounding records Mobile Fidelity ever made, and the ONLY record of theirs I know of that can't be beat by a standard real-time mastered pressing.

We’re talking DEMO DISC QUALITY SOUND here. The spaciousness of the studio and the three-dimensional placement of the myriad percussion instruments and bells within its walls make this something of an audiophile spectacular of a different kind -- dreamy and intensely emotional.

This is a wonderful Kenny Rankin album. I played side one all the way through and enjoyed it immensely. I don’t know why this record is so rare -- it’s got great songs like Blackbird and People Get Ready, which to me sound like they almost could have been hit songs.

ZZ Top - Fandango

Warners Heavy Vinyl Reviewed

  (Item #: zztopfanda_warners)

Sonic Grade: C

Warner Brothers remastered Fandango in 2008, so we took some domestic pressings and put them up against their Heavy Vinyl LP. The results were mixed; most of our originals pressings were lackluster, many were noisy, and we just weren't hearing anything with the sound we thought deserved to be called a Hot Stamper.

We shelved the project for another day. In the interim we kept buying domestic pressings -- originals and reissues -- in the hopes that something good would come our way.

Fleetwood Mac - Fleetwood Mac

MoFi Reviewed

  (Item #: fleetfleet_mofi)

Sonic Grade: B

Another MoFi LP reviewed, and this one is actually pretty good.

The Mobile Fidelity pressing of this album can actually sound quite good (if you get hold of a decent copy that is). Audio perfection it ain't, but all in all it's a very enjoyable record. Its strengths are many and its faults are few. Let's give credit where credit is due; the MoFi is rich, transparent, sweet, and natural, and you won't hear us saying that about very many MoFi pressings.

Steeleye Span - All Around My Hat

Our Shootout Winner from 2013

  (Item #: steelallar_2013)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

The best copy to ever hit the site! It ain't easy to find clean British pressings of this one, which is why it's taken us so long to get a copy like this up on the site. We played a good sized stack of these recently and only a couple did the job well enough to be considered Hot Stampers. This one is a big step up, with way less of the thick / murky / veiled sound that plagues many copies.

A stunning Top Copy of this Tom Waits classic! A superb recording, with much credit due to Waits' constant collaborator Bones Howe who produced and engineered. It's a live-in-the-studio romp through Los Angeles with Waits playing the role of tour guide, and the results are wonderful.

Emmylou Harris - Pieces Of The Sky

Our Shootout Winner from 2014

  (Item #: harripiece_2014)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

This album has the real Country Sound, with plenty of top players sitting in on these sessions, musicians who know country music as well as anyone alive. The legendary guitarist for Elvis (and half the stars of Nashville), James Burton, lends a hand on Electric and Dobro. On vocals and guitar Herb Pederson, who still plays locally. (Together with Chris Hillman they put on a great show of old Country and Honky Tonk favorites. If they come to your town check them out.) Ricky Skaggs on fiddle, Billy Payne on piano, Bernie Leadon on banjo -- no doubt a good time was had by all in the studio,,,

TWO EXCELLENT SIDES, including an AMAZING A+++ SIDE ONE! It is TOUGH to find great sound for this album, but this copy really nailed it. Emmylou's voice, obviously the key element, is just killer here. Most copies we play have their fair share of problems, but when you get one like this the sonic issues fade into the background, letting you focus on one thing -- the MUSIC.

Andres Segovia / The Guitar and I

Reviewed in 2011

  (Item #: segovguita_2011)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Classical Music Hall of Fame.

This Super Hot Stamper has amazingly NATURAL sound. It's transparent and tonally correct and above all "REAL", with the kind of sound you rarely hear on recordings made in studios.

This recording sounds like it was made in a practice room with microphones placed at a distance, accurately capturing the sound you would hear if Maestro Segovia had invited you to an advanced class for experienced players.
