Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young - Deja Vu

Our Shootout Winner from 2007

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock Hall of Fame and another in the long list of recordings that really comes alive when you Turn Up Your Volume.

MASTER TAPE SOUND ON BOTH SIDES -- Folks, it just doesn’t get any better than this. To say this copy murders the competition is the understatement of the year. There is only ONE stamper that gives you the Deja Vu magic from top to bottom and this is it. [We know now that that isn't true.]

Product Detail

All three of our Super Hot Stamper copies have exactly the same stampers on both sides, and if that doesn’t tell you something is up with those numbers I don’t know what would.

(Of course the numbers are only part of the story, which explains why some sides get Three Pluses and some sides get only one.)

The uncredited engineer behind these magic stampers got hold of the master tape and recut this beauty on whatever workhorse cutter was in use at the time. No fancy wire. No audiophile amplification nonsense. Just the bandwidth without the distortion.

This may be the key. The originals do not have the extreme highs and deep punchy bass of these reissues, and without extension on the top the voices get painfully harsh and edgy. Without the deepest bass, the bass that's left is hollow and tubby, and frequently smeared. Add distortion in the midrange from less-than-optimal cutting equipment and you have the sound of the typical domestic copy in a nutshell. (The imports are uniformly hopeless as well.)

Both sides here are Right On The Money -- super high resolution, tonal perfection, tubey magical and ALIVE. The vocals are silky and sweet with virtually no strain. The highs are extended, the bass is deep and punchy, and the clarity is superb. Just listen to the sound of the guitars during the solos -- you can really hear the sound of the pick hitting the strings. The rhythm guitars sound meaty and chunky like the best sounding copies of Zuma and After The Gold Rush. It's exceptionally transparent with loads of detail and texture on each instrument and voice. Both sides here are the very essence of Master Tape Sound, and as such, we award each of them the coveted A+++, As Good As It Gets, baby!
