Brahms / Symphony #1 / Munch

This rare Shaded Dog pressing of LSC 2197 has excellent sound, with both sides rating a sonic grade of A+ to A++. As we noted on the site the last time we listed a recording of the work, the powerful opening is practically impossible to capture on tape without distortion; it certainly was during the Golden Age of Classical Recordings, if our experience is any guide.

Which means that some congestion in the loudest sections, likely caused by compressor overload, are unavoidable. Once you get past the opening, which is actually handled relatively well, considering how many records suffer from bad breakup and groove damage, the rest of the work can sound quite good, especially the quieter parts, which are full of Living Stereo Tubey Magic.
