Paul McCartney Testimonial

... Maybe I’m Amazed gave me goosebumps ...

  (Item #: mccarmccar1_testimonial)

Rick sent us this letter recently after having played his first Hot Stamper, the first record he ever bought from us, how about that! At $300 it wasn’t cheap, but the best things in life never are, and certainly there is little in the world of audio that's cheap and much good. This is not a cheap hobby if you want to do it right, and even tons of money doesn't guarantee you will get good sound. It's far more complicated than that. To quote Winston Churchill, it takes "blood, toil, tears and sweat."

He went on to say "You ask, what is our aim? I can answer in one word: Victory. Victory at all costs... Victory, however long and hard the road may be..."

Why Didn't Those @!#&/?% Record Companies Produce More Hot Stampers?

  (Item #: santasant1_press)

A while back we received a letter from a good customer of ours lamenting how rare Hot Stamper pressings are.

Why were so many copies produced without HOT STAMPER sound when it was obviously possible is beyond me and quite frankly upsets me. But that is the way it is.

For Pete’s Sake, What’s Wrong With Blue?

Thoughts on "The Definitive Vinyl" Version

  (Item #: mitchblue_letter_2)

In 2007 a customer took issue with our summary rejection of the new Blue.

Tom,

I find it curious you are not carrying the new Joni Mitchell Blue vinyl issue. Even to the point of saying you can do better... for 25 bucks? After clicking on the LP cover and reading the comments from over the years it makes me wonder what your agenda really is. I paid $250 for a wonderful WLP and this Rhino issue smokes it, even as good as it is. I even have a Cd cut from this mastering session off the analog FLAT, not Dolby tapes and this vinyl even beats it.... of course just my opinion.

The first rule of Blue Club is...

You do not talk about Blue Club.

  (Item #: mitchblue_letter)

A good customer of ours recently started to play the Blue game (not to be confused with The Circle Game). He figured he’s have a go at Joni, and dropped us a little note about what he heard.

Hi Tom,

I only have two copies of Blue, the regular CD, and one record that in my opinion it’s a pretty good copy. The vinyl plays M-, very quiet. Thecover is also M-. No strain in any of the vocals, and I can listen to it pretty loud. Guitars on all tracks very clean and airy, and float on topof the rest of the mix. Piano, however, and bass in general lacks anyweight. The CD piano on My Old Man is much better. Overall impressions, the CD is listenable, but the record has the intimacy that sends chills up and down your spine. The CD doesn’t do that.

Dylan Thomas - Under Milk Wood

Our First Testimonial for a Record We've Never Heard

  (Item #: thomaunder_letter)

This week’s testimonial letter comes from our good customer Michael L. in England.

He had just ordered some fairly expensive White Hot Stamper copies of jazz classics that we raved about: Kind of Blue, Miles Davis In Person - Friday Night and Somethin' Else.

Knowing that he's been collecting both originals and audiophile reissues for decades, I dropped him a note asking him to "make sure to play our Hot Stampers against all your originals! We welcome the comparison."

What follows is his enthusiastic reply.

Chicago Transit Authority on MoFi

Or Is It The Glade Spray Mist Septet?

  (Item #: chicachica1_letter)

Our good customer Roger wrote to tell us of his Chicago shootout which included the MoFi, some later pressings and our Hot Stamper. Here is his story.

HI Tom

Got a chance to listen to your Chicago Transit Authority hot stamper and compare it to regular US and MFSL pressings. It has been a while since I last listened to this recording, but I listened to a lot of Chicago; Blood, Sweat, and Tears; and The Ides of March when I was in high school and college. I loved this music back then, as short-lived as it was, unfortunately.

Kenny Burrell - Midnight Blue

One Customer's Take on the 45

  (Item #: burremidni_letter)

A good customer had this to say about a recent shootout:

"By the way side 2 of Midnight Blue bested every other copy I played including the 45 RPM Blue Note [Analogue Productions] reissue. The 45 RPM is very good. You know that technically it is right, but at the same time it’s missing something. When I listened to the [Hot] stamper copy you dug up for me I found it a little noisy at first and wasn’t sure if I could live with it. However after returning to the 45 RPM there was no enjoyment, so I dropped the needle on the stamper one more time, and then I heard it..."

Turning Skeptics into Believers

One Record at a Time

  (Item #: skeptic_2014)

We recently received this letter from a fellow on our email list who finds our prices for vinyl curious, and which he considers a bygone technology at this point in time. Can’t say I agree with that assessment. It sure would be nice to demonstrate for him how much better records sound than the supposedly superior technologies that have -- for most people, perhaps even for this gentleman -- replaced them.

Phil is a long time customer who shares my love for this powerful performance. He knows full well how bad most copies sound -- he has a few of his own to prove it. When he saw this beauty in the mailer he did what any self-respecting record lover would do: he jumped on it. Even at $500 he feels he got his money's worth, and that's a lot of money for a Deutsche Grammophon record, the kind that no record store in the world would charge more than ten or twenty dollars for. 30 Years of Bad Sounding Deja Vu's

Wiped Away in an Instant!

  (Item #: crosbdejav_30years)

A testimonial from a customer for his Hot Stamper Deja Vu discusses what it takes to get good sound from your stereo. (Hint: it's a good sounding record, duh.)

I have come to a conclusion - no matter whether I had the best $50,000 amps in the world or a $29,000 phono supply or the $150,000 Wilson Alexandria speakers or all that other incredible stuff that audiophiles lust for - not one of those items can make a shit record sound anything but like a shit record. There is no overcoming the original source material that you play on your stereo system.

Originals vs. Reissues

  (Item #: minguahum_testimonial)

The letter below sheds some light on a vitally important mastering issue: specifically the answer to the question, Which are better sounding, originals or reissues? The letter finishes this way.

Incidentally, just a couple of days ago I conducted my own shootout between the Red Label "Mingus Ah Um" I bought from you a few weeks back and my pristine, Six Eye White Label Promo original. Making Audio Progress

Step One: Weed Out the Heavy Vinyl

  (Item #: weeding)

In his latest letter Dan tells us of his disappointment with the new reissues he's been trying:

... And thanks again for that amazing "Who's Next" record. It was startling to hear the difference between that and the Classic - and that was one of the better modern audiophile records!

I can't tell you how many modern reissues I've bought over the past couple months that have lost, and lost badly, to just my one single original or early pressing of an album. Reissues by AC/DC, The Who, ZZ Top, The Rolling Stones, and Patti Smith have all failed miserably against my merely average sounding originals.

Cat Stevens Teaser & Tea on CD

So, How Do They Sound, Anyway?

  (Item #: stevetease_cd)

This letter from our good customer Gary references the Hot Stampers he bought from us and subsequently played for a CD-only audiophile friend with a megabuck stereo. This is his story, followed by my commentary about the sound of Cat Stevens’ music on disc.

The Cat Stevens Hot Stampers are just amazing. The dynamic range is almost shocking on my rig. It’s like a car with the ability to go from 0 to 60 in 2 seconds… It is so cool to turn up the music really loud and still converse with people if you want. The quiet is dead quiet. That is the sign of a good record.

Steely Dan's Pretzelly Logic

Holy Shit! This Is a GREAT LP!

  (Item #: steelpretz_testimonial_0409)

"I Took Tom’s Advice and Played It Real Loud."

One of our newest Hot Stamper converts, John R., a customer only since February, has already managed to acquire about a dozen of our best Hot Stamper LPs to the tune of many thousands of dollars. As we like to say, the best copies may not be cheap, but here at Better Records you most certainly get what you pay for. Just ask John. If I read him right what he got for his 650 clams was something that exceeded any expectation he might have had for it. Like we say ourselves sometimes: Who knew? How would anyone know this album could so this good? The average copy barely hints at the sound the engineers recorded.

Anyway, that’s our story. Now here’s John’s.

Never Heard Maiden Voyage Like This

The Transparency on this Copy Is Superb!

  (Item #: hancomaide_testimonial)

Hello Gentlemen,

I have to commend you once again. I have never heard Maiden Voyage like this before. The transparency on this copy is superb! I gave up listening to my reissue a while back. It had a heavy veil hanging over it that was obvious. Yet as the listener I yearned to hear past it because the music itself is so wonderful. Thanks for digging up this treasure. It will bring many hours of enjoyment now and in the future.

Records are a tangible investment for the listener. When you find a great copy you hang on to it because it engages you. It moves you in a real sense. A collector who collects for value of first issue is a collector too. However they collect as one would coins, stamps or baseball cards. The value is attributed to what is perceived not what is experienced. I do not slam anyone for this. If joy is found in this manner then, so be it.

Hi Tom,

Just a note on another hot stamper shootout I recently did, this time on Cat Stevens Tea for the Tillerman. It was interesting comparing itto the regular MFSL half-speed, the MFSL UHQR pressing, and a UK Pink Island 3U pressing, which was my all-time champ.

Talisman Testimonial

... AT LEAST a $1000 upgrade for a quarter of the price!

  (Item #: talisman_testimonial)

Our good customer Dan was pretty darn impressed with the Walker Talisman. Here is his story.

Tom,

Just used the Talisman this evening. Fan-friggin-tastic! This is AT LEAST a $1000 upgrade for a quarter of the price. Even the glowing reviews on your site could not prepare me for the difference this magical little wand made.

Where do I begin? That thick, invisible curtain (or were there three?) is now lifted from my speakers. Clarity, detail, and transparency have been DRAMATICALLY improved. The top end soared, and with much greater ease. Vocals lost grit and grain. And all the instruments, whether it was a snare drum or a sitar, had vastly sharper imaging, having been stripped of their magnetically-induced distortion. Who’d a thought, right?

Our good customer Joel not only loved our slightly noisy but amazing sounding Mona Bone Hot Stamper, he found it to be pretty darn quiet to boot! He says it’s the Best $180 he's ever spent on an LP. Seems like a lot of money for one record but when the music and sound are this good who wants to argue with a happy man?
Hi Tom

I just spun the bargain tics and pops A+++ Mona Bone Jakon. I listened to this record hundreds of times growing up, but never like this! Silky smooth voices and guitars, so lifelike! Nice bass extension also... I have to laugh, because I think that the condition of this record is excellent!

A $100 Hot Stamper Is Now My Reference Album!

  (Item #: steveteafo_testimonial)

One of our best customers, Gerardo, who has to have his Hot Stampers shipped all the way to the Phillipines where he lives, asked recently about Tea for the Tillerman. He wanted to know if we had something that would beat the MoFi pressing. Having recently played one (for condition; we already know how bad the sound is) we said HELL YEAH!

In fact, about the cheapest clean plain old American copy we can dig up for you will beat the pants off the MoFi. So we charged him $100 and sent it on out. Not having heard back, we followed up with this email:

Hi Gerardo,

We were just wondering if you ever got to have the Tea For The Tillerman Hot Stamper vs. MoFi / UHQR shootout. Hope it went well!

Tom,

I’m in receipt of the Talisman and have tried it on numerous CDs, LPs and DVDs... damn! And to think I doubted you. A truly serious upgrade without spending serious money. A sheen has been removed from the top and I can hear farther into the recording than ever before, whatever the format. It definitely benefits LP playback more, at least on my system (a Linn rig). Mids are more palpable and instruments play more to their natural voice.

Hi Todd,

YES! No doubt - the best record (or music) ever played on my set up. I had a few experts in for evaluating -- they all (like me) were fairly skeptical. But after just a few tracks everybody was convinced... WOW. You describe the album very well on your site. Another thing is how easy and smooth everything sounds and all the acoustic instruments...
