The Fleetwood Mac You Don't Know

Kiln House

  (Item #: fleetkilnh_know)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock Hall of Fame, a Forgotten Classic, and another in the long list of recordings that really comes alive when you Turn Up Your Volume.

Kiln House is one of the all-time great Fleetwood Mac albums. It’s the first they recorded after Peter Green left. With Green gone Jeremy Spencer’s influence came to the fore. He was apparently quite a fan of Buddy Holly. His songs are straightforward and unerringly melodic.

Watch Out for Too Fat and Too Rich

  (Item #: buckibucki_wtlf)

Another in our series of Home Audio Exercises with advice on What to Listen For (WTLF) as you critically evaluate your copy of the album.

The biggest problem with this record is sound that gets too fat and too rich. There has to be transparency to the sound that lets us listen into the studio. When Stevie is singing, almost always double-tracked by the way, Lindsay is often doing harmony vocals well behind her, double-tracked as well. You want to be able to hear PAST her all the way back to him and hear exactly what he's doing. Most copies don't let you do that.

Fleetwood Mac - Bare Trees

A Long Time Coming

  (Item #: fleetbaret_audio)

Until not that many years ago we simply were not able to do successful shootouts for Bare Trees, Fleetwood Mac's wonderful album from 1972. The pressings we were playing just didn't sound very good to us. British, German, Japanese, domestic originals, domestic reissues; all of them left much too much to be desired.

Thankfully we can tell you that the best copies sound a whole lot better now than they did then.

It's always true, and needs to be remembered, that most of the shortcomings you hear in the sound of a record are caused by your equipment (which includes record cleaning equipment), your room, and your electricity.

Listening in Depth

  (Item #: fleetbaret_depth)

Presenting another entry in our extensive Listening in Depth series.

This period of Fleetwood Mac, from Kiln House (1970) through Mystery to Me (1973) -- both are records I would take to my Desert Island -- has always been my favorite of the band. I grew up on this stuff, and I can tell you from personal experience, having played a dozen copies of Bare Trees practically all day at some pretty serious levels, it is a positive THRILL to hear it sound so good. For me, a big speaker guy with a penchant for giving the old volume knob an extra click or two, it just doesn't get any better than rockin' out to the song Bare Trees.

We Knew the Best Pressings Were Domestic as Far Back as 2005

  (Item #: fleetbaret_2005)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

In 2005, after doing a big shootout with a British original, Japanese pressings and domestic pressings, I was shocked to find that I actually think my Hot Stamper domestic pressing gets the sound of this side [two] better than any of the others. The Brit is silky smooth, but it's a little too smooth and doesn't rock on this song the way the domestic copy does.

I was also shocked to note that the American original seems to be made not from a dub but rather from a real master tape. The tell tale signs of a sub-generation tape are inaudible.

Fleetwood Mac - Fleetwood Mac

A Demo Disc for Bass

  (Item #: fleetfleet_bass)

Another in our series of Demo Discs for Bass.

One of the special qualities this album has is AMAZINGLY well-defined, punchy, deep BASS -- the kind you just never hear on most records (or most pressings of this album for that matter).

The bass is typically bloated on most copies of this album, something that is especially true for the MoFi. When you get a copy with note-like, properly balanced bass, the whole album works. Bass is the foundation of the music. When the bass is blubbery and ill-defined, the music itself sounds blurred. It loses its focus.

Listening in Depth

  (Item #: fleetfleet_depth)

Another in our series of Home Audio Exercises with advice on What to Listen For (WTLF) as you critically evaluate your copy of the album.

So few copies we ran across in our shootout had that "jump out of the speakers" sound we knew was possible from our previous shootouts of the album. When finally one did, boy did it ever. What a knockout. Hot Stampers? The best copies are on fire!

If you have a big speaker system and have taken advantage of the audio revolutions we discuss throughout the site, this is the kind of record that shows just how much progress you've made.

MoFi Reviewed

  (Item #: fleetfleet_5012)

Sonic Grade: B

Another MoFi LP reviewed, and this one is actually pretty good.

The Mobile Fidelity pressing of this album can actually sound quite good (if you get hold of a decent copy that is). Audio perfection it ain't, but all in all it's a very enjoyable record. Its strengths are many and its faults are few. Let's give credit where credit is due; the MoFi is rich, transparent, sweet, and natural, and you won't hear us saying that about very many MoFi pressings.

Our Shootout Winner from 2012

  (Item #: fleetfleet_2012)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

In 2012 we noted that this WHITE HOT copy of Fleetwood Mac’s self-titled album has some of THE BEST SOUND WE HAD EVER HEARD, not only for this album, but for the band itself. As good as the best copies of Rumours are, they don’t really sound like this. Until we started doing these shootouts in about 2006 we had no idea this album was remotely this well recorded. There are layers and layers of subtle instrumental textures and recording effects throughout 1975's Fleetwood Mac that we had never even suspected were there. Then we played this copy.

Our Shootout Winner from 2008

  (Item #: fleetfutur_2008)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

Finally, SUPERB SOUNDING STAMPERS have been discovered for this wonderful Fleetwood Mac album, a personal favorite from 1971! We can GUARANTEE you have never heard one that sounds like this, because practically every copy we've ever played sounded like an old cassette. Unless you have a very special copy -- domestic, not Brit, more about that later -- and know how to clean it right, the pressing you own of Future Games will have virtually no top end, no real ambience, and no presence to speak of.

What to Listen For - Punchy Drums

  (Item #: fleetgreat_wtlf)

Another in our series of Home Audio Exercises with advice on What to Listen For (WTLF) as you critically evaluate your copy of the album.

Many pressings are compressed, murky, veiled and recessed, especially the early ones. To find one that is transparent, clear, present and punchy is no mean feat.

On either side listen for the drums to punch through the mix.

Here it is, folks -- the best sounding copy of Mystery To Me to ever hit our site. This copy positively DOES IT ALL -- it's super open and spacious with tons of energy and incredible presence. The bottom end is just KILLER and there's dramatically more richness and fullness than you get on most copies out there.

Fleetwood Mac - Penguin

Our Shootout Winner from 2011

  (Item #: fleetpengu_2011)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

As Good As It Gets sound on side two of this Minty Reprise original LP. The sound is positively JUMPING out of the speakers in a way that was completely unexpected. We simply did not hear this kind of sound on any other copy. We often talk about the size of the soundfield on a particular pressing, side to side, bottom to top, and even more often about the energy found on one copy relative to another. On this side two we were surprised by a Penguin that was BIGGER and more ENERGETIC than we have ever heard.

Fleetwood Mac - Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac

Our Shootout Winner from 2014

  (Item #: fleetpeter_2014)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

We won't be surprised if you don't have this one in your collection. Let's face it, who in his right mind would keep throwing good money after bad, buying up one bad sounding copy after another in the hopes that someday one of them would sound good?

We would! Why shouldn't we? We get paid good money to do that kind of dirty work, and beyond the money, we get the THRILL of being the first to play these wonderful records, full of the music we love. (Not too many Hot Stamper shootouts get done for bands and albums we don't like. Who could get motivated enough to sit through copy after copy of some Audiophile Bullshit LP?)

A Simply Vinyl Winner

  (Item #: fleetpeter_svlp)

Our Four Plus Shootout Winner from 2010

  (Item #: fleetrumou_2010)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

White Hot Stampers for Rumours with UNBELIEVABLY GOOD SOUND (and quiet vinyl) FROM START TO FINISH! Folks, if you’re looking for a Demo Quality version of one of the most beloved pop albums of all time, this is the record for you! Side one was so darned good that we had to bust out the rare A++++ (Four Plus) grade, and side two is just about as amazing. It certainly ain’t a cheap record, but it’s beyond difficult to find copies of this classic with two sides that sound like this and play quietly. Trust us, we’ve been trying for years and have only come up with a small handful of copies that could even come close to this one.

Listening in Depth

  (Item #: fleetrumou_depth)

Another in our series of Home Audio Exercises with advice on What to Listen For (WTLF) as you critically evaluate your copy of Rumours.

The best copies exhibit the kind of presence, bass, dynamics and energy found only on the kind of Super Demo Discs we rave about here endlessly: the BS&Ts, Stardusts, Zumas and the like. When you get a good copy of this record, it is a Demo Disc. Who knew? Who even suspected? The grooves don't lie, and these grooves have got a lot to say.

Fleetwood Mac - The Pious Bird Of Good Omen

Our Shootout Winner from 2014

  (Item #: fleetpious_2014)

If you're a fan of Peter Green era Fleetwood Mac -- and who in his right mind wouldn't be -- then you can't go wrong with this record. Need Your Love So Bad, Albratross and Black Magic Woman are all featured here.

Speaking of Black Magic Woman, the best copies of Pious Bird reproduce the bass-heavy drumming on that track much better than the Greatest Hits album we also recommend. It's very unlikely that you can find better sound for that classic than right here on this very copy.

Heavy Vinyl Production

And the Unpredictability of Random Processes

  (Item #: stochastic)

Those in the business of producing the highest quality remastered recordings on LP are crashing smack into a problem fundamentally unavoidable in the manufacturing of the vinyl record -- randomness.

Record producers can control many of the processes (variables) that go into the making of a high quality record. But they cannot control all of them. The word for such a situation, one with random, uncontrollable aspects, is "stochastic."

Stevie Nicks - Bella Donna

Our Shootout Winner from 2016

  (Item #: nicksbella_2016)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

The sound of the typical copy can best be summed up in three words: thin, hard and bright. When the sound is thin or hard or bright the fun factor of this mainstream drops to zero. Stop Draggin' My Heart Around and Leather And Lace both sound great on the radio, why not on Warners vinyl? We can't blame Sheffield Labs, the original cutting house: all the copies we played -- good, bad and otherwise -- were originals and mastered by them.

The Fleetwood Mac You Don't Know

Future Games

  (Item #: fleetfutur_know)

This is another one of Fleetwood Mac's Forgotten Classics from 1971.

Danny Kirwan is the guy who really takes control on Future Games. Some of the best songs this band ever did are here, many of them written by Kirwan. The opening track on side one, Woman Of A Thousand Years, and the opening track on side two, Sands Of Time, are both his and set the tone for the whole side, which is folky, ethereal and extended. The best of these pop songs don't seem to follow any of the standard pop conventions of verse verse chorus. They seem to wander on a journey of discovery. In that way they remind me a little bit of 20th century French classical music, or some of the longer tracks from Neil Young's Zuma.

The Self-Titled First Album & English Rose

  (Item #: fleetblack_2014)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame and a Forgotten Classic from 1971.

You just can't write better songs than Love That Burns or Black Magic Woman, both of which can be found here. And Albatross, the mellow instrumental that closes out side four, was a Number One hit in the UK in 1969, can you believe it? It was backed on some releases by Need Your Love So Bad, another one of our all time favorite Fleetwood Mac songs. The band was on fire back when Peter Green was at the helm. These two LPs are proof enough.
