A Classic of Classic Rock

The Heart and Soul of Better Records

  (Item #: claptericc_classic_rock)

We had a killer pressing a few years back which sounded a whole lot better than I ever thought the album could sound. Man, what a revelation to hear an old favorite -- a Forgotten Classic --sound so amazingly spacious and sweet.

I've been playing this album since 1970, the year it came out. Back then my collection was made up of albums by The Beatles, The Doors, Buffalo Springfield, Crosby Stills and Nash, America, Rod Stewart, Led Zeppelin, Elton John, Chicago, James Taylor, Spirit, The Band, Loggins and Messina, Blind Faith, Bread, The Who ... this was the music of my youth, and although many other artists and styles of music have been added to the playlist in the ensuing decades, Classic Rock still makes up a substantial portion of the music I play and enjoy today.

More Than Blind Faith

  (Item #: blindblind_advances)

In a 2007 commentary for the Hot Stamper pressing of Blind Faith we noted that

When it finally all comes together for such a famously compromised recording, it’s nothing less than a THRILL. More than anything else, the sound is RIGHT. Like Layla or Surrealistic Pillow, this is no demo disc by any stretch of the imagination, but that should hardly keep us from enjoying the music. And now we have the record that lets us do it.

Blind Faith - Blind Faith

MoFi Debunked

  (Item #: blindblind_debunk)

Sonic Grade: C-

Our latest shootout this time around (07/09) left us with a fairly large serving of egg on our face concerning the commentary we had written for the MoFi pressing of Blind Faith, a textbook example of We Was Wrong.

It’s rich and sweet with SHOCKINGLY GOOD SOUND. MFSL did a masterful job with this one, I’d put it in the top 10 MOFIs of all-time!
I regret to say none of that is true.

Bllind Faith - Blind Faith

Our Shootout Winner from 2010

  (Item #: blindblind_2010)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock Hall of Fame.

This early British pressing SLAUGHTERED all the other pressings we played it against! It's the Blind Faith you’ve been waiting for: Tubey Magical, Transparent, full of Life and Energy -- dear friends, it’s all here! And the vinyl is some of the quietest we've ever heard for this album.

Sick of buying one harsh, thin, distorted, murky LP after another in a vain attempt to find a copy that reminds you of why you LOVED this record so much when it came out back in 1969?

Cream - Disraeli Gears

Our Shootout Winner from 2016

  (Item #: creamdisra_2016)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

This copy’s got the kind of tubey analog sound you need for this music -- it’s warm, rich, smooth, and pretty much free of the nasty grain that gets in the way on most pressings. There’s good extension up top, and the bottom end is meaty and well-defined.

The lesson we learned is that when the extremes are properly transferred to the vinyl, the middle will take care of itself. Since the extremes seem to be the hardest thing to get right, at least on this record, that might explain why so many copies don't really cut the mustard while this one did.

Live and Learn

  (Item #: creamdisra_wrong)

Our latest shootout for Cream's classic second album provided proof positive that We Was Wrong when we said:

No reissue we've ever played sounded especially good and none likely ever will.

Ah, but some do! We would love to tell you exactly what to look for so that you can go find one for yourself, but that's bad for business as I'm sure you can see. Let's just say there will be at least one later reissue of the album with very good grades coming soon to a site near you.

Cream - Goodbye

Some of the Best Live Rock Sound Ever Recorded

  (Item #: creamgoodb_2016)

When you get a good side one of Goodbye you'll hear exactly why we are calling it one of the Best Sounding Live Rock Albums of all time.

Goodbye has the Big Rock Sound that we go crazy for here at Better Records. The top copies just plain ROCK HARDER than all the others. Yes, they're bigger. Yes, they have more weight and whomp down low. Yes, they are smoother and more natural up top. But what really sets them apart is the tremendous Energy they contain in their grooves. The music EXPLODES out of the speakers and comes to life on the best copies like practically nothing you have ever heard.

Cream - Heavy Cream

Not Recommended

  (Item #: creamheavy)

This is a Near Mint Polydor Double LP mastered by Robert Ludwig. The tonal balance is right on the money, but of course, because this is a compilation, it is made from copies of the master tapes, not real master tapes themselves, so it will always have that blurry, smearly, opaque, airless sub-gen tape quality to the sound (not unlike most of the Heavy Vinyl we audition from time to time).

The record contains 22 of Cream's best tracks compiled from all their live and studio albums.

Derek and the Dominos - Layla (2 LPs)

Remastering the Remaster (and Keeping It a Secret)

  (Item #: dereklayla_SVLP_revisited)

NEWSFLASH! [circa 2010]

Noticing that this title had recently come back into print, and remembering that we used to like the SVLP of Layla, we decided to order a current copy of the album from SIMPLY VINYL. Soon enough it came in, we played it, and we were pretty shocked to hear that the damn thing sounded just plain AWFUL.

Was I wrong about it before? Only one way to know. I pulled out my old Review Copy from way back when it first came out and sure enough that early pressing sounded dramatically BETTER than the new one. The stampers were completely different of course; someone had remastered it recently and ruined it.

Imports Versus Domestics

  (Item #: dereklayla_2008)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock Hall of Fame.

All four sides of this bad boy have the Layla Sound we had hoped for -- Tubey Magical, energetic, and balanced tonally. Most importantly, it sounds CORRECT; you get the sense that you are hearing the music exactly as the band intended. The best sounding tracks have presence, clarity, and transparency like you have never heard.

Eric Clapton - At His Best

Not Recommended

  (Item #: claptathis)

Sonic Grade: D

A Hall of Shame pressing.

This pressing, along with the rest of the series, was mastered by Robert Ludwig. The sound may be as rich and full as we described it years ago, but the tapes RL had to work with were dubs, so the sound is not up to audiophile standards, not ours anyway.

Eric Clapton - Backless

Our Shootout Winner from 2015

  (Item #: claptbackl_2015)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

The true test for side two was the second track, the old blues song Early In The Morning. It's by far the best sounding track on the album, with huge space, rich bass, a fat snare and Tubey Magic to die for. This is the kind of sound that only the likes of Glyn Johns can get down on tape, live in the studio no doubt, and it made it easy to do the shootout for side two. The bigger, the richer, the tubier, the more transparent the better, and this copy took top honors on the side. It is THE track to demo with.

TWO AMAZING SIDES RATING AT OR NEAR A+++! Man, what a revelation to hear this old favorite sound so incredibly rich and open. And at Mint Minus on both sides, this one is exceptionally quiet to boot! Good Horns, Probably Good Everything

  (Item #: claptericc_wtlf)

Another in our neverending series of Home Audio Exercises with specific advice on What to Listen For (WTLF) as you critically evaluate your copy.

The sound of the horn arrangements backing practically every song on the album are key to the quality of the pressing and mastering. Blurry, smeary, leading-edge-challenged horns are the kiss of death on this album, as are grainy, gritty, transistory ones. When the horns have clarity, correct tonality, plenty of space around them and a solid, full-bodied sound, probably every other instrument in the soundscape will too.

Eric Clapton - Just One Night

Our Shootout Winner from 2014

  (Item #: claptjusto_2014)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

With so many bad sounding Clapton albums from the mid- to late '70s out there in the bins, it's refreshing to hear this material sounding lively and clear for a change. The performances seem to hold up as well. If you like the "Tulsa Time" era, this record is going to be hard to beat.

Many of his best songs are here, including Lay Down Sally, Wonderful Tonight, After Midnight, Blues Power, Cocaine, Further on Up the Road and plenty more.

Our Shootout Winner from 2011

  (Item #: claptmoney)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

This Minty looking Warner Brothers Duck Promo LP fetures Ry Cooder, Donald Duck Dunn and Albert Lee.

This album has that Master Tape sound. You feel as though you are hearing what the engineer intended. The one real flaw in the recording is the amount of compression the engineer used -- it's a bit heavy handed. This is after all a radio friendly pop album, so no surprise there. I doubt if there are many better sounding copies around than this one.
