Deep Purple - Fireball

Reviewed in 2014

  (Item #: deeppfireb_2014)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

This is a Hot Stamper copy of Deep Purple's Fireball that earned A+ or better grades for both sides. We played a big stack of pressings for this shootout and most of them were mediocre or worse. It's nearly impossible to find a copy that isn't dry and thin. This one is no Demo Disc but it's certainly a nice step up from what you're likely to get on a copy from the bins of your local store.

Deep Purple - In Rock

Our Shootout Winner from 2016

  (Item #: deeppinroc_2016)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

The best pressings give you exactly what you want from this brand of straight ahead rock and roll: presence in the vocals; solid, note-like bass; big punchy drums, and the kind of live-in-the-studio energetic, clean and clear sound. (AC/DC is another band with that kind of live studio sound. With big speakers and the power to drive them YOU ARE THERE.)

Machine Head

Our Price: $249.99

  • Two killer sides clocking in at Double Plus (A++) - the sound is HUGE, with real energy, presence and WHOMP

  • Rarely on the site -- excellent copies like this are beyond difficult to come by, even for us!
  • 5 stars: "Machine Head was anything but a one-trick pony, introducing the bona fide classic opener "Highway Star," which epitomized all of Deep Purple's intensity and versatility while featuring perhaps the greatest soloing duel ever between guitarist Ritchie Blackmore and organist Jon Lord."

Our Shootout Winner from 2013

  (Item #: deeppmachi_2013)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock Hall of Fame and another in the long list of recordings that really comes alive when you Turn Up Your Volume.

AMAZING HARD-ROCKIN' SOUND ON BOTH SIDES! We just finished another shootout for this rockin' classic and couldn't find another copy that even came close to this one. The sound is positively HUGE with real energy, presence and WHOMP. That's a BIG deal for this kind of music! This album makes our Top 100 list for one reason: it ROCKS like crazy.

180g Rhino LP Debunked

A Hall of Shame pressing.

I’m guessing that very few people have ever heard this record sound good. The average copy is nothing special, but this one is a boring, lifeless mess so save your money.

Live and Learn

  (Item #: deeppmadei_2006)

This is a classic case of Live and Learn. What we had to say below about Made in Japan back in 2006 is just plain emabarrassing.

"This is a very nice looking EMI British Import Double LP that plays Mint Minus. This copy sounds tonally correct and pretty lively. The DCC may be better but it’s a LOT MORE MONEY I haven't played that record since it came out years ago so who's to say."

Ouch.

Machine Head Live? That would not be far off, and the fact they brought MARTIN BIRCH along with them all the way to Japan in order to engineer a live album that was only supposed to sell to the Japanese market (!) could not have been more fortuitous for us audiophiles.

What to Listen For

  (Item #: deeppmadei_wtlf)

Another in our series of Home Audio Exercises with advice on What to Listen For (WTLF) as you critically evaluate your copy of the album.

We've raved about a number of live albums over the years. Some of the better sounding ones that come readily to mind (in alphabetical order) are Belafonte at Carnegie Hall, David Live, Johnny Cash At San Quentin, Donny Hathaway Live, The Jimi Hendrix Concerts, Performance - Rockin The Fillmore, Live Wire - Blues Power, Waiting For Columbus, Get Your Ya-Ya's Out and Live at Leeds. I would be proud to have any of them in my collection.

Deep Purple - Mark I & II

Reviewed in 2009

  (Item #: deeppmarko_2009)

This is a Minty looking EMI Import Double LP. It’s a compilation with a single LP dedicated to each era of the bands early history. As with any compilation some tracks sound better than others here but don’t let the German sourced tapes scare you. These sound like really high quality tapes, close to, if not the actual master tapes. The second LP features the most recognizable and probably best lineup (Mark II) the band ever had, with songs such as Black Knight, Speed King, Smoke on the Water and Highway star to name but a few.

Deep Purple - Who Do We Think We Are!

Our Shootout Winner from 2011

  (Item #: deeppwhodo_2011)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock Hall of Fame.

This British Import Purple Records pressing has a GREAT side one, and AMAZING A+++ side two, and VERY QUIET VINYL throughout! I don't think you could find a better sounding side two no matter what you did. The sound here is BIG, BOLD and LIVELY with real weight down low and excellent presence. It really JUMPS out of the speakers and fills up the room! Side one is very good as well, with all of the qualities described above. It doesn't fully open up the way side two does, but it still slaughtered most of the copies we played it against.

We Knew the Best Pressings Were Domestic as Far Back as 2005

  (Item #: fleetbaret_2005)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

In 2005, after doing a big shootout with a British original, Japanese pressings and domestic pressings, I was shocked to find that I actually think my Hot Stamper domestic pressing gets the sound of this side [two] better than any of the others. The Brit is silky smooth, but it's a little too smooth and doesn't rock on this song the way the domestic copy does.

I was also shocked to note that the American original seems to be made not from a dub but rather from a real master tape. The tell tale signs of a sub-generation tape are inaudible.

Fleetwood Mac - Bare Trees

A Long Time Coming

  (Item #: fleetbaret_audio)

Until not that many years ago we simply were not able to do successful shootouts for Bare Trees, Fleetwood Mac's wonderful album from 1972. The pressings we were playing just didn't sound very good to us. British, German, Japanese, domestic originals, domestic reissues; all of them left much too much to be desired.

Thankfully we can tell you that the best copies sound a whole lot better now than they did then.

It's always true, and needs to be remembered, that most of the shortcomings you hear in the sound of a record are caused by your equipment (which includes record cleaning equipment), your room, and your electricity.

Listening in Depth

  (Item #: fleetbaret_depth)

Presenting another entry in our extensive Listening in Depth series.

This period of Fleetwood Mac, from Kiln House (1970) through Mystery to Me (1973) -- both are records I would take to my Desert Island -- has always been my favorite of the band. I grew up on this stuff, and I can tell you from personal experience, having played a dozen copies of Bare Trees practically all day at some pretty serious levels, it is a positive THRILL to hear it sound so good. For me, a big speaker guy with a penchant for giving the old volume knob an extra click or two, it just doesn't get any better than rockin' out to the song Bare Trees.

Fleetwood Mac - Future Games

Our Shootout Winner from 2008

  (Item #: fleetfutur_2008)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

Finally, SUPERB SOUNDING STAMPERS have been discovered for this wonderful Fleetwood Mac album, a personal favorite from 1971! We can GUARANTEE you have never heard one that sounds like this, because practically every copy we've ever played sounded like an old cassette. Unless you have a very special copy -- domestic, not Brit, more about that later -- and know how to clean it right, the pressing you own of Future Games will have virtually no top end, no real ambience, and no presence to speak of.

The Fleetwood Mac You Don't Know

Future Games

  (Item #: fleetfutur_know)

This is another one of Fleetwood Mac's Forgotten Classics from 1971.

Danny Kirwan is the guy who really takes control on Future Games. Some of the best songs this band ever did are here, many of them written by Kirwan. The opening track on side one, Woman Of A Thousand Years, and the opening track on side two, Sands Of Time, are both his and set the tone for the whole side, which is folky, ethereal and extended. The best of these pop songs don't seem to follow any of the standard pop conventions of verse verse chorus. They seem to wander on a journey of discovery. In that way they remind me a little bit of 20th century French classical music, or some of the longer tracks from Neil Young's Zuma.

What to Listen For - Punchy Drums

  (Item #: fleetgreat_wtlf)

Another in our series of Home Audio Exercises with advice on What to Listen For (WTLF) as you critically evaluate your copy of the album.

Many pressings are compressed, murky, veiled and recessed, especially the early ones. To find one that is transparent, clear, present and punchy is no mean feat.

On either side listen for the drums to punch through the mix.

The Fleetwood Mac You Don't Know

Kiln House

  (Item #: fleetkilnh_know)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock Hall of Fame, a Forgotten Classic, and another in the long list of recordings that really comes alive when you Turn Up Your Volume.

Kiln House is one of the all-time great Fleetwood Mac albums. It’s the first they recorded after Peter Green left. With Green gone Jeremy Spencer’s influence came to the fore. He was apparently quite a fan of Buddy Holly. His songs are straightforward and unerringly melodic.

Whomp Factor on "Why"

  (Item #: fleetmyste_wtlf)

Another in our series of Home Audio Exercises with advice on What to Listen For (WTLF) as you critically evaluate your copy of the album.

There is an amazing bass drum on this album that plays on selective tracks, most notably the song "Why", and it will shake the foundation and knock your knick-knacks right off their shelves if you've got the woofers (and the room) to play it right. I was using this record to demo my system in the mid-'70s. I had a pair of Fulton Js and they could really pump out the low end this record needs.

Fleetwood Mac - Penguin

Our Shootout Winner from 2011

  (Item #: fleetpengu_2011)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

As Good As It Gets sound on side two of this Minty Reprise original LP. The sound is positively JUMPING out of the speakers in a way that was completely unexpected. We simply did not hear this kind of sound on any other copy. We often talk about the size of the soundfield on a particular pressing, side to side, bottom to top, and even more often about the energy found on one copy relative to another. On this side two we were surprised by a Penguin that was BIGGER and more ENERGETIC than we have ever heard.
