Led Zeppelin - III

Our Shootout Winner from 2008

  (Item #: ledze3_2008)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock Hall of Fame.

It is INCREDIBLY difficult to find knockout copies of Zep III -- of the dozen-plus copies we auditioned, this British Import Plum & Orange pressing was the only one with two superb sides, with an AGAIG A+++ side two and a side one that's just half a step behind at A++ - A+++. Folks, when I tell you that it is no mean feat to find a decent copy of this album, I am not joking around.

Led Zeppelin - III

Classic Records Debunked

  (Item #: ledze3_classic_records)

Sonic Grade: F

A Hall of Shame pressing and another Classic Records LP debunked.

Ridiculously bright and harsh, we are proud to say this was one of the Classic Zep releases that we never carried on the site (along with II and Houses, both of which stink).

Led Zeppelin III

Proof that Jimmy Page Was a Brilliant Producer

  (Item #: ledze3_page)

The startling resolution and transparency found on the best copies of Zep III let you hear every element in the huge soundfield that Jimmy Page designed for his recordings. They allow you to appreciate every carefully placed instrument and the remarkable sonic detail to be discovered as each track unfolds.

The size, space, energy and clarity of the hottest Hot Stamper copies are surely what make possible a more profound appreciation of the singular effort that went into these recordings. Along with the kind of Master Tape Sound found on the best pressings comes a deeper appreciation of the remarkable skills of one of rock's true production geniuses, Jimmy Page.

Peter Frampton - Frampton

Our Shootout Winner from 2013

  (Item #: frampframpton_2013)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock Hall of Fame.

This is a shootout we'd been trying to do for years, but the copies we'd been playing off and on hadn't been especially cooperative, and onto the back burner our plans would go. Maybe next year...

A bit of background: Both his first solo album and this, his fourth, were recorded by the well-known engineer Chris Kimsey, who famously worked with the Stones and others too numerous to mention. To say that the sound of his albums varies considerably would be the understatement of the year. The first album (British only, fyi) is rich, sweet, and Tubey Magical as practically anything you've ever heard (as well as overly tube compressed, its biggest fault).

Peter Frampton - Frampton Comes Alive

What to Listen For

  (Item #: frampframp_wtlf)

Another in the long list of recordings that really comes alive when you Turn Up Your Volume.

What to listen for you ask? Dynamic, soaring guitar solos! On the best copies the guitar solos are the loudest parts of some songs, which, as everyone who's ever been to a rock concert knows, is exactly what happens in live rock music.

Not many live albums are mixed to allow the guitar solos to rock the way these do. Since Frampton is one of my favorite players, hearing his solos get loud on this album is nothing less than a thrill.

Peter Frampton - Wind of Change

Our Shootout Winner from 2016

Hot Stampers for one of our favorite Classic Rock records have finally made it to the site! This British original is the very definition of TUBEY MAGIC. The sound is so rich and sweet it will make you want to take all your CDs and dump them in the trash (if you haven’t done so already).

Rolling Stones - Emotional Rescue

The Stones Album You Don't Know

  (Item #: rolliemoti_2013)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and one of the better late-period Stones albums, in this case from 1980.

Side two of this copy ranks up there with the very best we've ever heard, earning an A+++ grade and DESTROYING our preconceived notions about the kind of sonics we might get from the ultimate copies. This one DOES IT, plain and simple. It's got serious punch down low, superb clarity, all the extension up top, and a HUGE open soundfield that lets you hear every last detail. She's So Cold sounds amazing, we've never heard it sound better.

Ten Years After - A Space In Time

Ranking the Most Tubey Magical Rock Recordings

  (Item #: tenyeaspac_tubeymagic)

This is some of the best High-Production-Value rock music of the '70s. The amount of effort that went into the recording of this album is comparable to that expended by the engineers and producers of bands like Supertramp, Yes, Jethro Tull, Ambrosia, Pink Floyd and too many others to list. It seems that no effort or cost was spared in making the home listening experience as compelling as the recording technology of the day permitted.

Big Production Tubey Magical British Rock & Roll just doesn't get much better than A Space in Time.

The Rolling Stones - Some Girls

Our Shootout Winner from 2008

  (Item #: rollisomeg_2008)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Pop Hall of Fame.

Side one is an absolute knockout -- we've never heard one like it and we don't expect to find a better one. Our standard top grade of A+++ only begins to tell the story here. No other copy we played had bass this deep and meaty, or drums so full and punchy. You aren't going to believe how hard it rocks, with all the WHOMP and ENERGY we hoped for when we began shooting out this title. The sax solo in Miss You sounds incredible -- it actually has some balls, something you just don't get with the typical pressing. The hi-hats sound incredibly natural and clear, and the vocals are Right On The Money (ROTM).

The Rolling Stones - Sticky Fingers

Listening in Depth

  (Item #: rollistick_depth)

Another in our series of Home Audio Exercises with advice on What to Listen For (WTLF) as you critically evaluate your copy of Sticky Fingers.

A QUICK TEST: The best copies have texture and real dynamics in the brass. The bad copies are smeared, grainy and unpleasant when the brass comes in. Toss those bad ones and start shooting out the good ones. Believe me, if you find a good one it will be worth all the work.

And don't forget to Turn Up Your Volume.

The Rolling Stones - Sticky Fingers

MoFi Debunked

  (Item #: rollistick_mofi_debunk)

Sonic Grade: F

A Hall of Shame pressing and another MoFi LP debunked.

The MoFi pressing of this album is a joke. It’s so compressed, lifeless, and lacking in bottom end that it would hardly interfere with even the most polite conversation at a wine tasting. I consider it one of the worst sounding versions ot the album ever made. It’s an Audiophile Record in the worst sense of the word.

The Rolling Stones - Sticky Fingers

Worst Version Ever!

  (Item #: rollistick_debunk)

Sonic Grade: F

A Hall of Shame Pressing and another Heavy Vinyl LP debunked.

This RTI 180g copy (with the zipper cover) is one of a series of five titles Bob Ludwig cut in the ’90s. According to the man, after cutting the record he chanced upon a consumer copy and was shocked to hear how bad it sounded.

It sounded, according to him, nothing like the record he had cut. Somehow they had botched the pressings and ruined the sound. How this could happen I can’t imagine.

The Rolling Stones - Tattoo You

Our Shootout Winner from 2011

  (Item #: rollitatto_2011)

A distinguished member of the Better Records Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

THE BEST SIDE TWO WE'VE HEARD, which means we've never heard Waiting On A Friend sound this good on any other copy! We just finished a huge shootout for this 1981 Stones album, one that the All Music Guide tags as "essential latter-day Stones". In the tradition of other late '70s / early '80s Stones albums (Some Girls, Goats Head Soup, It's Only Rock And Roll), the sound is a bit raw at times, but a copy like this one gives you enough energy, body and richness to make for some very enjoyable serious listening.
